based on the notification that should have happened. part of those questions were about the medical condition itself. what was it that austin went through and what were the complications. those questions were answered. we'll get to that in a second. the other question were about the notification process that seems to have failed. why is it that president biden didn't know for three days after austin himself was hospitalized. those questions remain open. so what we learn today in a statement from walter reid where austin still is at this point, is that austin was diagnosed with prostate cancer in early december. he then went on december 22nd for a minimally invasive surgery to deal with the prostate k cancer. it was caught early. he was under general anesthesia and released the next day. it's unclear if anyone knew at this point that he was under general anesthesia, and that's significant because austin is the zsecretary of defense. even if his powers were delegated, his spoblts delegated to his deputy secretary of

heinrich with the news from there today. >> good morning, bill. there are reports the president was exasperated he was left in the dark about his defense secretary's hospitalization despite public statements from the administration backing austin. the pentagon says word didn't get to the white house in a timely manner. austin's chief of staff had the flu. late last night they issued a memo directing a review over what happened with some immediate changes taking effect in the meantime. insuring when duties are transferred to another person top brass, and relevant folks at the white house get an email. the pentagon said there was never a gap that could have caused a security risk. deputy secretary of defense was given duties on her vacation without understanding why. austin because taken by ambulance to the hospital on january 1st. it's also unclear how long he was in the icu or what access he

nothing. no idea at all. we know he went in for an elective procedure on december 22nd. the only detail is that it required an overnight stay. w released from the hospital on december 23rd. ten days later, on new year's day, january 1st, he started experiencing some extreme pain. that's all we know is extreme pain. it was severe enough that he was taken to the hospital via ambulance that afternoon. we don't know any more than he was conscious in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. at some point over the next 24 hours or so, his condition worsened to the point where he felt it was necessary to transferis responsibilities and some of his authorities to his deputy secretary of defense. she was notified on january 2nd that she was assuming some of the responsibilities while on vacation in puerto rico. critically here, she was not told why she was assuming those authorities or thate had been hospitized. as you said, was in the intensive care unit untilwo
