an american wounded on the ba battlefield in ukraine, just a year after he's released from russia in a high-profile prisoner swap. a biden administration official telling cnn that the marine veteran trevor reed was wounded while fighting in ukraine. they are family sizing that reed was not fighting on behalf of the u.s. government. the u.s. consistently concerned about escalation with russia. cnn's oren liebermann is at the pentagon now. oren, where is lee now? do we note severity of his wounds? >> reporter: jim, right now, trevor reed is in germany, he's come out of ukraine according to the state department with the help of an ngo who got him out of ukraine with his injuries. we don't know at this point how he suffered the injuries and the extent. we know he was treated first in the ukrainian capital of kyiv and now en route to germany. where exactly, that, too, remains a question that we're
waiting for an answer. trevor reed, as you pointed out was released from a russian prison in april 2022. even held for three years on russia charges on endangering a law enforcement officer there when he was released it was in a prisoner swap for a russian serving a 20-year sentence for cocaine smuggling. it took place in turkey. most of the time trevor reed was on our air talking about another american journalist evan gershkovich. and he was tweeting up to a couple months ago. and made the decision to go and fight as a privateizen. he wasn't fighting on any dod administration. an official says cnn, i want to make it m reed was not engaged in any activities on behalf of the u.s. government. the u.s. government has been

where they get stationed or where they live to access health care. but what's most important is the underlying tactic that the senator is using. this is more politicizing of the military than any other policies he's debating and we would rather he stop attacking 300 families who have nothing to do with the policy in the first place. and process this agreement with the dod through the regular legislative channels. >> and, sarah, what happens if the hold drags on, if this continues? >> well, by the end of the summer, we're going to have half of the joints of chief staff to be open. that's no way to run the country. does the senator expect the military to run without making decisions. this is going to be terrible for international security, which is why we're trying to encourage the senator, withdraw his hold, resolve the days agreement through normal appropriate channels so we can move forward and be fully staffed for what
have already quit their old jobs and can't move and get the new job so they're in some financial limbo as well. but i think the most alarming stories are from families who have military kids who about to turn 18 who are taking one look at military games played with the military and considering not joining because they don't want to put their careers at risk. those the stories i want to pay close attention this is ramification are for recruitment retention. >> that's something because there are issues in the force. i wonder, sarah, what you make of the senator's argument that he's trying to do this to get politics out of the military. that he wants the military not have anything to do with the debate over productive rights? >> well, first of all, i think it's a fundamental misunderstanding of the policy at play. the dod has posited what is essentially a travel and leave policy to allow service members who do not have control over
allies in the region and that we'll be there. you heard the term extended deterrence. that's more than just words. it's deeds. by us conducting these types of exercises, port visits, it demonstrates to our allies in south korea, japan and elsewhere that the united states will be there as a strong member of this important alliance in the region. >> neil: if i can switch to ukraine. the russians are saying a terrorist drone attacked moscow. they say ukraine is behind this and we're accepting it. what do you say? >> first of all, when it comes to these types of reports about drone attacks outside of ukrainian territory, and i'll let the ukrainians talk to that, i can tell you from a dod standpoint, our focus is on
