The Venezuelan Exodus: A New Migrant Diaspora in the United States

Over the last year an unprecedented wave of Venezuelan immigrants flooded the US-Mexico border
prompting talk of a new migrant crisis. The Venezuelan migration to the US is part of the largest such
exodus in the history of the Americas. The scale and scope of the Venezuelan migration crisis raises
important questions. Why have so many Venezuelans opted to leave their country in recent years? How
have Venezuelan migrants fared in other countries and how in turn have they affected those countries
that receive them? What dangers and opposition do they face on their journeys? What is the future of
Venezuelan migrants in the US? And how is this phenomenon impacting US-Venezuelan relations? In
this article, we draw on dozens of semi-structured interviews and informal conversations conducted
between 2019 and the present by the authors with Venezuelan migrants in Colombia, Mexico, and the
United States. Combining these primary sources with other available academic and media-based
publications, we explore why so many Venezuelans have left their country in recent years, the realities
awaiting them in receiving countries and along their journeys, and what ultimately this means for this
new diaspora in the United States and for the country itself.

Changing Faces of Immigrants Crossing through Ciudad Juárez and into the United States: Reflections on Migrants, Culture, and Crime

In recent years, unauthorized US border crossings by non-Mexican Latin American nationals have
increased significantly. This article examines the impact that these new migrants have had on Ciudad
Juárez, Mexico. It focuses especially on the period immediately preceding the COVID-19 pandemic to the
present. Since 2018, Central Americans, Cubans, Haitians and Venezuelans have passed through Juárez
in record numbers, and many have settled at least temporarily there. Through ethnographic
observations and interviews the author analyzes the impact the new migrants have had on border society and how
Juarenses have responded to each of the immigrant groups. Acts of charity and generosity toward the
migrants are common, but so too are xenophobia and hostility, especially from local politicians, tabloid
journalists, local law enforcement, and members of organized crime. As large numbers of migrants,
especially Venezuelans at present, have flooded into downtown Juárez, the impact has been
transformative to local business and street culture and led to brewing social tensions on the border that
may worsen in the future.

Americas Newsroom

immigrants crossing, as you can see here, the rio grande every day in different areas and volumes. it is a way of life for us. it has been happening for years and years. when president reagan was in office he gave amnesty to a lot of immigrants that came here legally. the best solution was to do that. congress never fixed the law. it caused the problem of having the illegals continue since 1986. so we continue to see this. now when you add the asylum seekers, so you add another wave of immigrants coming here and we have a capacity issue. we can simply not allow everyone that's having problems throughout world to come to the united states. that's what i believe. so if we don't have a capacity issue, then the proper people to solve it is congress along with our president. but our president needs to provide leadership to do that.
