leveed by jack smith's team? >> that is the big question, a potential third indictment for donald trump. remember, he was charged earlier this year by the d.a. in manhattan, alvin bragg, related to a hush money case from the 2016 election. jack smith, the federal special counsel, indicted him earlier this year on the mar-a-lago documents case. and this third potential indictment we're talking about is related to the 2020 election aftermath. so one week ago, last weekend the special counsel sent a target letter to donald trump. that is a huge deal. it's basically a precursor to an indictment in most situations. in the past few days, donald trump had an opportunity, if he wanted to, to come here to washington and tell his side of the story to the grand jury. he declined to do so. that means it's up to jack smith
democracy to be a permanent voting block how do you read these stories and these reports? >> yeah, exactly what we saw on the ground leading up to election day really throughout the last year was reflected in the data, which is that voters saw democracy was on the ballot. that it wasn't a partisan issue, it was an american issue it was one that we could all come together around, form a nonpartisan pro-democracy coalition of voters. and my hope is the article talked about it being a narrow slice of folks who were willing to cross over and see this as a nonpartisan issue. we've got to expand that coalition, expand that slice in the months and years ahead though election denialism was proven to be a losing strategy, it still is a strategy, and it's one we can expect to be leveed in the 2024 cycle. >> and you and governor whitmer, you had the ability as an entire ticket to communicate these themes about democracy and

have the same spillover effects as the swift sanction. >> are there other sanctions, regimes administration is looking to dip into? the globe sanctions that in theory could be leveed against russia and leaders. is the u.s. looking to that? are there other measures that could stop him because if as our reporters said putin feels impervious to sanctions isn't moved by them, doesn't care, then what? >> there is no such thing as sanctions proof economy. one major thrust we can deploy is export controls and export controls are like financial sanctions. they both deny something to russia that it desperately needs and can't replace from anywhere else. export controls are focused on critical technology. think about the technology of our time, semi conductors, robotics, the west and our
