>> well, i thought donald trump made a huge mistake suggesting that wages are too high in our country. but i thought, frankly, that there were a lot of other more sensible ideas espoused about how to create economic growth, how to improve the plight of the middle class. the worst thing we could do is to continue the over-regulated economy that we currently have, whether in the energy arena, the financial system, all the way across the board. the over-regulated economy is keeping our country from growing like we should, from putting people back to work, from having a real recovery, which we have yet to have under the obama/clinton policies. >> we know what a smaller republican government looks like. we know what it means when you see foreclosure signs dotting america. fema unable to respond to a catastrophe. that's what smaller government means in the way the republicans were talking about last night. it's not something we want to get dragged back to.

believe there should be some way to deal with the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country other than sending them all home. donald trump and ted cruz on the other side of that equation last night. marco rubio, who has faced a lot of criticism for his support in the past of bipartisan comprehensive immigration legislation that stalled in congress in 2013, he really did get a pass, wasn't pressed about his policy, which increasingly has become more hard-line in recent months as his poll numbers are risen. here he was with savannah guthrie on the "today" show. >> the belief that the hispanic communities are impacted by illegal immigration. they have many people who have relatives who are waiting to come legally. i think all americans want to see the immigration system work better. we want to be realistic but responsible about what you do with people here illegally. but you have to bring immigration under control.

and then putting that out there as truth. [ applause ] >> you heard the applause. and a lot of what he has talked about over the last week has been continuing the anti-media theme that we heard in the last debate. it's been lucrative for him as well, his campaign telling me last night they had just done the numbers and over the last couple days he has raised $2 million. he is the only candidate on the republican side, the only candidate actually, who has been reporting these numbers day to day, week to week. so far this is working for him. i think the bigger question coming out of this debate where he seemed to be less sure on some of the foreign policy questions, some of the economic questions, how did that play to the audience, will that make any difference in his poll numbers. what they've seen, though, in the past is three previous debates where his performance was considered somewhat middle of the road. it hasn't hurt him at all. if anything, his numbers continue to grow and his likability continues to grow in

system actually hurts, because, as we know from the congressional budget office, you would be looking at deficit reduction thanks to comprehensive immigration reform. the reality is that there is economic impacts there. there was still a lot of intramural fighting. one thing i agree with senator martinez on her is that there was no clear winner. jeb performed as well or as bad as everybody else. that means the middle class was the losers last night. when you have an entire field up there talking about how bad increasing the minimum wage would be it shows they don't understand the struggles that people are living with every day. they don't understand what a family goes through when they want to send their kids to college. what people are coming out of college riddled with debt for their entire life have to go through. that's what made last night's debate bad for the middle class and bad for the american people. >> senator, one thing they were all pretty much in agreement on last night is precisely the issue of minimum wage, and no raise in that minimum wage. it was pretty much across the board. what call the candidates said.

this country off from illegal immigration. now, what he does reference a lot, last night in the debate, this morning on "morning joe," and on the trail a lot is a 1952 operation that eisenhower implemented to deport one million undocumented workers back then. what he doesn't point out is how exactly that was done and the name of the operation. the name was "operation wet-back." it's a very offensive term today. that's why you never hear him talk about it. also, how it was done was in some cases anything but humane. many immigrants were taken away in cargo ships described as hellish conditions. others were dropped off in the middle of the desert. 88 people died from heat stroke being dropped off in the middle of the desert. others ripped from their homes, their belongings and their property and taken anywhere in mexico. so when donald trump talks about deporting these 11 million undocumented workers and when pressed on how to do that, he does say it would be done in a humane process, but to reference

money -- frankly, it is a great expenditure, because the more we spend the less we're going to have to use it, the way i looking at it. people are looking at us right now as weak and ineffective, we don't flow what we're doing, we don't have strong leadership. they have a lot of bad things going. >> but you say that the united states should not be the world's policemen. >> joe, we owe $18 trillion. >> does that put you in line with where barack obama is as far as leading from behind? >> i'm a little bit on the let's go side than that. but at the same time i love the fact that -- look. putin is bombing the hell out of somebody and the people that he's bombing right now have to be isis to a certain extent. they just probably blew up his airplane. that was a russian plane and it went down. i assume it was a bomb. i think they don't want to say it but it looks like it was a bomb. having putin dropping bombs on isis is a very positive thing. we don't have to do 100% of the bombing. >> jeb bush says that that's reckless and irresponsible. >> i think it's irresponsible

whether on the international arena or the economy. why another four years of obama policies would not be good for the country going forward. >> luis, did you get an impression that this debate, maybe in contrast to others, was slowly kind of gearing over towards the republican differences with the democrats? because you know, in the last couple debates it's been an intramural fighting. did you get a sense that it's fine-tuning? if so, what are the messages coming out of the republicans. >> there was a lot of intramural fighting last night. i give the moderators credit for trying to make it substantive. you want to talk about immigrati immigration. look at the reality that the deportation policies that donald trump is talking about and that marco rubio was quiet about basically would have an economic impact. they would take a lot of money out of the economy. they would take people who are working and contributing into their local communities out of the economy. and standing in the way of fixing the broken immigration

800,000 jobs a month when president bush left office. that doesn't work for the middle class. it certainly doesn't work for folks here in wisconsin. >> senator, let's talk a little bit about immigration. someone with a lot at stake last night was jeb bush. he took a stand over the issue of immigration. >> the way you win the presidency is to have practical plans. lay them out there. we need to allow people to earn legal status where they pay a fine, where they work, where they don't commit crimes, where they learn english and over an extended period of time they earn legal status. that's the proper path. >> senator, i understand that you do support jeb bush. do you think he did what he needed to last night to really kind of deal with his poll numbers and the drop in those numbers consistently? >> i thought jeb bush had a great night. but first let me point out to you also that the amount of applause in the room last night for jeb bush was overwhelming, much more so than when the
