electronic version and then around the population of kabul. i got one. i have seen it in multiple different places and people use that to get on to the base. the reason that we're likely dealing with this complicated humanitarian situation on the base, this complicated issue where filtration appears to not have been what it should have been is frankly due to this benevolent measure brought in to expedite those who should be on and now it seems to be used to get people who shouldn't get on. many other means that people use to get on to that particular base. but it is, it is startling that this particular good faith measure seems to have resulted in such chaos. i have to tell you at this stage looking at the numbers, looking at the volume of planes that seem able to land and looking at the heat, the deteriorating situation around the airport, looking at the fact this is an indefinite task to some degree. tens of thousands of afghans who would happily get on to their base and go to a life in the

janet, let's begin with what this means, if we can, a little bit, for the uk. borisjohnson has been trying to develop an independent foreign policy. we know it's been pretty clear that this was not a decision that the british particularly wanted to take at this moment. what does this and what's happening in afghanistan tell us about britain's influence in washington, its military capability and its ability to adopt a leadership role, do you think? well, it's not at all surprising that the foreign policies of the uk and us should be diverging, because they're the principal members of nato, and nato has been in an existential crisis ever since the cold war ended. it was devised, if we all remember, as an adversary to the soviet bloc and the communisty bloc, and when communism collapsed and there was no more soviet union to oppose, the obvious question is what is nato for? and within ten years of communism collapsing, we had 9/11 and the rise of islamist terrorism, and so nato became, basically, a counterterrorism outfit, and that was its impetus, that was its raison d'etre.

cape cod, and all of our ships and boats that were taking refuge during the heaviest winds are moving to long island sound and soon to the shore of boston. >> interesting. you're seeing some of the ferries are already in movement, nantucket, martha's vineyard -- >> nantucket and martha's vineyard are not. but others are doing that. we expect to hopefully get those ferries running inf. they'll evaluate tomorrow. i would imagine they would be up tomorrow. >> all right. obviously rescues we know u.s. coast guard is there at the ready. what are the other means in which you're ready to assist if and when that time comes because of this storm? >> so i think as you guys talked about, we're worried about coastal flooding.

worth of flying. you have to remember, there will come a point when the u.s. military realizes it has to start to withdraw the presence at the airport. and i'm sure we'll be hoping that all the refugees are off the airport by then, all the afghans are off the airport by then, so some sort of chaos or panic aren't sparked. >> i wonder if you're hearing anything about whether any special measures are being considered to try to get all of that staff you just talked to me about, afghan personnel, who already had their special immigrant visas to try to retrieve them from wherever they are, their homes, et cetera, and find some other means in which to get them to the airport since the gates have been closed for the masses to get into the airport, but that perhaps there still are plans to get them on a plane and out? >> there's obviously difficulties, i'm sure here with u.s. officials. they want everyone to know they're doing things but they can't say what they are without

we're desperately trying to do the right thing. we know we can because these people are still alive. what they're describing on the ground are horrific scenes that are probably going to get worse. it's a never again moment now unfolding. do we have the courage and conviction to do the right thing? we have the means. we clearly have international support to do this. the american people want it. it seems to be the only person who thus far hasn't ordered it is the president. so he speaks later today. i'm hoping that he's going to say that. the taliban don't order the united states around and we're going to stay there until this gets done and we'll use whatever means necessary to get this done because that's what we owe these people. there's no us and them. it's just us. think of it this way. we're desperately trying not to leave any american behind. these people, as far as i'm concerned, are future americans. >> matt, i'm awfully glad to have given you an opportunity to express all this. i know the biden administration

are exactly flipped. six in ten. while americans, by and large, agree with president biden that we had to pull out of afghanistan, they by no means agree that we have done it well or that it should have been carried out the way president biden and his team have carried it out. we heard from jake sullivan on "meet the press" who was asked by chuck todd whether they had a plan for this contingency. this is what he said. >> no plan survived first contact with reality. no plan can account for every contingency that occurs at a tactical level on a day-to-day basis. you adjust. we've adjusted and believe we are making progress. >> reporter: some of the ways are finding new ways to safely
