Religion and Morality in the Same-Sex Marriage Debate

Some same-sex marriage activists might wish to exclude certain moral and religious viewpoints from the same-sex marriage debate. Evidence shows, however, that religion and moral argumentation are often harnessed in support of same-sex marriage. Although support for the traditional understanding of marriage does not require belief in the religious teachings of any particular faith, the decision to recognize same-sex marriage in law involves inescapable moral considerations. Parties on both sides of the issue, therefore, should be free to bring their moral viewpoints to bear on the issues involved.

Queer to the Left came to raise hell

Queer to the Left was active from the late 90s through 2005.

Heading into the 21st century, queer activism was at a crossroads. While the AIDS epidemic was far from over for the millions of people who lacked access to adequate health care and could not afford expensive antiretroviral therapy—which cost thousands of dollars a year even with insurance—many larger gay organizations had moved on from the issue. With gay marriage and access to military services held up as preeminent issues by groups like the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the more radical impulses of groups like AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) shifted from center stage and into the margins of the community.

It was 1996, and President Bill Clinton was running for a second term against Bob Dole, the Republican candidate. In the gay/lesbian/bi/trans world, there was talk of boycotting the election to show displeasure with the center-right politics of compromise that characterized Mr. Clinton’s first term. But Carmen Vázquez was having none of it.

point because they haven't actually revealed any of the language. what press secretary josh ernest saturday on friday is they are supporting the non-discrimination act as it stands with the religious exemption. when you're dealing with the executive order you're dealing with federal contractors, not just private employers. you're dealing with people who work with the federal government, who earn taxpayer money. as far as these groups that have pulled out of the employment non-discrimination act, groups like the aclu and the task force, national gay and lesbian task force, they're trying to send a message to the white house that this religious exemption is unacceptable and they were sort of caught in a contradictory position where they were supporting it in nda, but they were saying, no, you can't have that in the executive order that you're drafting. >> the thing that i found surprising in terms of the amount of support that's been withdrawn from nda is this was
