it is all in service to the readers. so there is -- there are threads of evil knievel, that have to do with leader and politicians today. i have evil knievel running a fictitious race for president and there is 1977 it was the rise of tabloid journalism and lucy works for a tabloid that is loosely based on rupert murdoch and what he did with the new york post and some other newspapers. but those are just threads for me to play with. it is really all about just telling the best story and having the most exciting yarn for readers to dive into. i know that when i write a book, i'm competing with other novelists, i'm competing with twitter and with threads, i'm competing with netflix and with you guys. so, i need to make sure i'm writing as compelling a novel as possible. >> if you get around to a fourth book, the '80s and the 90s were

so i'm guessing that neither of you, your parents were at that point -- but i will say it was a weird era and a lot of fun to write about. you have evil knievel and the son of sam murderers and the serial killer in new york and the rise of tabloid journalism and the new york city blackout. it is a real period of distrust in this country after watergate and after the vietnam war. so i have two main characters who are the kids of the heroes of my first two novels. ike is an awol marine and lucy is an aspiring journalist and adventures deal with the '70s but just with some classic thriller questions and whodonit question. >> some of the story lines in your book mirrors some of what we're seeing today. how do you choose what reality that the real things that are happening today to go into your fictional book? >> well, i tries to just pick things that will make the book the best.

"all the demons" are here. it's set in the 1970s that allows you to explore the colorful era. i imagine it is fertile ground for fiction. how fun was it to research and write this book? >> i was 8 years old in 1977 when this took takes place. i don't remember most of the stuff i was talking about. what a wild time. i remember "star wars" and disco and elvis dying. but the stuff going on just in this one year, from evel knievel literally jumping sharks. this is eight months before fonz did it. to jimmy carter being inaugurated. the nixon frost interviews. son of sam murders and the rise of tabloid journalism. to the death of elvis presley. to cult membership rising.

book takes place. i don't remember most of it. i remember gas lines and disco and elvis dying and that's about it, but in this one year, 1977, so many strange things happened. stuntman superstar evel knievel literally jumps shark, and this is eight months before fonz does it on "happy days." studio 54 opens and the new york city blackout and ufo sightings all over the country and cults are rising all over the country, the son of sam serial killer is terrorizing new york and with that comes the rise of tabloid journalism. it's just this really exciting, bizarre -- >> this is so much like our time, just like now. you just listed out and changed the details slightly. it's like the '70s is happening again. >> totally. totally. 100%. there's a lot of resonance. the country was also going through this period of real disillusionment post-watergate
