up as tragic as that is, we know the delta variant is more transmissable. is that what is attributing to this? >> it is a very fine point. they have increased dramatically, five fold, since the beginning of summer nap is true and there is more cases per one million children hospitalized now than even in our peak in january. but the proportion of cases has remained the same that suggests that the delta variant is not more severe in children, it's just a matter of sheer numbers. the more cases in the community, the more cases in adults, the more cases we'll see in our children. importantly here too there is a relationship to vaccination status. we see a reverse association

fully vaccinated in this country which means we have a whole nation within a nation of unvaccinated folks. tens of millions of people who aren't vaccinated. not to mention children. unvaccinated folks are clustered in areas around each other because vaccination is not evenly distributed. there are areas like gaines county, texas where less than 25% are not vaccinated and places where 75% are vaccinated. we have a variant is more aggressive and more transmissable coupled with a total absence of public health measures to stop the spread. if you wanted an informal study that all those interventions that made life so constrained and difficult that they did save lives, well, we have gotten rid of all of them and now twice as many people are dying. it is to an extent

of them will require hospitalization. the more children get infected, the more kids you'll see that are going to require hospitalization. we do not know yet, we don't have enough data, chris, to say that on a child by child basis it's much more severe delta. it might be there's some hints that it is more severe in adults so you might be able to extrapolate that maybe it's going be more severe in children but from the data we have, the only thing we know is that more children are getting infected and the more kids infected, more will wind up in the hospital. >> i want to be really clear on this because it's something parents are thinking about a lot. what i read is the total hospitalization rate for all children. what you're saying is that is going up because all children are getting much more covid. covid is moving through children because delta is more transmissable but it's not the case, it has not been established that the percentage of children getting covid,

tens of millions of people who aren't vaccinated, not to mention children. unvaccinated folks are clustered in areas around each other because it's not evenly distributed throughout the population. areas like gains county, texas, less than 25% of people are fully vaccinated and middlesex county, massachusetts, where more than 75% of people are fully vaccinated. we have a variant which we know from the data is more aggressive and more transmissable. coupled with basically a total absence of public health measures to stop the spread. if you want an informal of the study that, yes, all those interventions that made life so difficult, they did save lives, well, we've got rid of them and now twice as many people are dying. but it is to an extent understandable, the situation we find ourselves in, because here's the thing. once vaccines came along it became very difficult to justify things like, for instance, shutting down bars and

and now you just wrote in an op-ed something that's popping a lot of eyes but it was a point you had to make, doc. this is going nowhere. covid will be with us six months, 12 months, 18 months. yes? >> yeah. i mean it's becoming endemic. that's the word that people use. i also put in there five strategies about how to sort of dance or coexist with this virus. we've been talking about them for some time. vaccinations. first of all, i got my vaccine card here. i think we need to have some way of actually proving that people are vaccinated. these cards, it's a little bit ridiculous that you have the app up in new york. how are people traveling from state to state going to show that? the right kind of masks. delta changed the equation, chris. this is far more transmissable. so surgical masks are good. this is my go-to mask which is a kn-95 mask, the black one. that's the mask that is pretty easy to use, very, very effective in terms of filtering

hospitalized nationally. currently here at children's hospital new orleans we currently have 16 children in the hospital with a diagnosis of covid-19. 6 of those are in the pediatric intensive care unit. so this virus is not only more transmissable, more contagious than earlier variants of the virus, but we also seem to be seeing more severe disease in children. >> and are the symptoms that you're seeing in kids similar to what you've seen in adults? is there a difference? >> the symptoms are similar. what ordinarily lands a child in the hospital is respiratory symptoms, sort of a pneumonia-type picture, respiratory distress. typically the child will have fever and they may have other complaints like severe headache or abdominal pain, that sort of thing, but it's really the pulmonary complications, the pneu pneumonia, that lands the child in the hospital or in the intensive care unit. >> so slightly fewer than 38% of

variant is more dangerous in terms of how ill you become. what we do know about it is it is more transmissable. and kids together will get the illness. mostly -- kids will do okay, far better than the older population, but they're a vector. and until all of us that can be vaccinated are, we have to stay safe and that means, yes, back to school because kids have suffered greatly from not being in school. but we can't surround them -- we can surround them by, every person who works in a school should be required to be vaccinated, and everybody should wear a mask. those are the two things. there's really nothing else. it's not a complicated issue. it's not a we or they issue. it's science. eric: what do you look out for when you have, someone calls up

the young players and i get that, because the young players, especially the younger ones who are not a top draft pick, those guys are going to be taking the vaccine whether they want to or not because they don't want to risk their chance of making it in the nfl, so i get what he's saying. but he's also said other things about you can still get covid if you take the vaccine and it's like, well, there's a point into all of that, there's a number of things. it's not necessarily to be able to spread it or to protect yourself against that vaccine -- or against covid. and now we have the new delta variant, which is much more transmissable than the regular covid-19. so there's going to be a lot that goes into this nfl season. you know, i wouldn't want to be the guy on the end that cost my team a playoff spot or that cost my team a home seed, a number one seed in the playoffs because you had to forfeit a game because you were unvaccinated.

first. >> i think one of the things we're finding about the delta variant, at least the preliminary studies, is people are shedding a lot more virus, maybe a thousand times more virus, so that's why it's so much more transmissable, so i do think masks will be very important indoors, whether or not you're vaccinated or unvaccinated. how things go really depends on how well you're vaccinating your community. so in the northeast where most adults and adolescents, almost all the adults and adolescents are vaccinated, i think they'll weather this pretty well. where i am in the south, especially some of the states like louisiana, mississippi are only 15% of the adolescents are vaccinated, 30%, 40% of the young adults, because of this defiance tragically, we're not going to do well. i think we're going to see delta accelerate and it's going to be a rough ride for the next few weeks and months. >> what say you, dr. blackstock? >> well, i agree largely with dr. hotez. i think it's going to be deja vu
