SANTIAGO, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Chile has launched an arbitration process against U.S.-based miner Albemarle, the world’s largest lithium producer, for allegedly underpaying royalties on its sales, the head of the state development office told a local newspaper on Sunday.
Pablo Terrazas, head of Corfo which handles the lithium contracts, told daily El Mercurio that the office had filed the request on Friday with the International Chamber of Commerce, demanding around $15 million extra in payments for 2020.
Albemarle has major lithium projects in Chile’s huge Atacama salt flats, which hold one of the world’s largest deposits of lithium, an ultra-light metal needed for batteries powering the shift towards electric vehicles.

White House ramps up effort to tackle automotive chip shortage

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Top economic and national security officials in the White House have ramped up efforts to help the U.S. auto industry fight a growing shortage of semiconductor chips that has forced production cuts worldwide, a White House spokeswoman said.
The administration of President Joe Biden has held meetings with automotive companies and suppliers to identify chokepoints and urged companies to work cooperatively to tackle the shortage, the spokeswoman said on Wednesday.
The White House has also tasked U.S. embassies with identifying how foreign countries and companies that produce chips can help resolve the global shortage and working with international partners and allies, urging them to deal with the current shortfall.

TOKYO, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Japan’s Olympics Minister Seiko Hashimoto has emerged as the preferred candidate to succeed Yoshiro Mori as president of the Tokyo 2020 organising committee after he stepped down last week, public broadcaster NHK said.
Mori’s recent resignation over sexist remarks is the latest blow for the Summer Games, already been marred by an unprecedented delay and strong public opposition in the face of coronavirus fears.
The panel will ask Hashimoto if she wishes to take the position, NHK added.
“I am aware of the report, but the committee is an independent body that makes its own decision,” the government’s spokesman, Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato, told a regular news conference.

RPT-COLUMN-China's 2020 refined nickel imports slump to 6-year low: Andy Home

* China's nickel imports 2013-2020: tmsnrt.rs/375FTdf
* 2020 nickel imports by product: tmsnrt.rs/2OtOrnN
LONDON, Feb 11 (Reuters) - China has bailed out the copper and aluminium markets by importing record amounts of the rest of the world’s surplus metal.
Not so the nickel market, however.
Chinese imports of refined nickel fell by 32% year-on-year to 130,700 tonnes in 2020. It was the lowest annual total since 2014.
This has not held back the London Metal Exchange (LME) nickel price, currently trading close to 17-month highs at $18,675 per tonne.
However, China’s lack of import appetite is evident in abundant LME stocks, which stand at 249,846 tonnes, up from 156,000 tonnes at the start of 2020. It is also clear to see in the LME contract’s loose date structure, the benchmark cash-to-three-month period closing out Wednesday at a $45 contango.
