real problem that the trump candidacy faces and the republicans face, which are independents. given the number of independents that said president trump did something wrong, i think it was 55%, and the mid-term elections from 2022 last year when democrats did very well with independents in selective contests, these given the democrats hope not withstanding the challenges that joe biden and his administration faces and that times poll had biden's approval at 39%, which, you know, i've been at this business a long time. that is very low. that is warning time. that means that his message is just not working. >> martha: let's play this from ron desantis talking to bret baier about the importance of showing up at the debate on august 23. watch this. a quick thought from you, tomi, if i may.

and even though he's been out on the campaign trail, he really has not been able to caption the type of momentum that people who are not for the trump candidacy would hope that he would be able to do. and steve cortez was pretty blunt in this twitter spaces interview. he was talking about trump being the front runner. he did say that he hoped that them nor people got to know desantis, got to know his personal story. and political story. that hopefully these numbers were changed. but overall, he was talking about how just how big of an uphill battle this is really going to be for the desantis campaign at the moment. and you know, the desantis campaign has talked about how this is a marathon and not a sprint and i can't emphasize that enough it definitely is and we still have many many months until the first nominating contests but as foreign was talking about there in south carolina and the show of force in the amount of enthusiasm the republican party has for donald trump right now being able to attract tens of

and he's breaking with trump on that. >> very much so. and i pressed him again, and he made very clear, that is not a policy that he supports. and i would say, kaitlan, that what the former president said to you wasn't even only that he is not ruling it out, i mean, he made the case for separating families being a deterrent, which is a very clear intentional policy. and it was just one of many indicators on very controversial policies that the former president had not changed from where he was. and it's also a reminder that, you know, a lot of republicans, we hear, well, i really liked donald trump's policies, but not his -- the sense of chaos that comes with a trump candidacy or a trump presidency. it's also a reminder that not all -- never mind democrats, not all republicans were onboard with some of his policies. this is a very stark example.

know from 2016, which trump has really remade the republican party. his strength is amongst the blue collar republicans, and in 2016, you saw the more standard issue chamber of commerce republicans split the vote between all of those other republicans that were on stage. you see in that poll, pence and haley are also doing well with college graduates. the question is, do other people get into the race, do they split that more? if you're ron desantis, i think you feel pretty good that you're doing good with college graduates. can you grow that? it doesn't seem like if you are donald trump, you don't have much more room to grow if you are a college graduate. you have witnessed the trump candidacy in 2016. it's not clear to me he has much more room to grow with those college graduates. but he certainly has a monopoly on really strong showing among those on non-college republicans. you heard the gentleman there say it's trump or die.
