black leaders took over. we talk a lot about berlin, germany, where if you go there, you see all of these memorials to the victims of the holocaust. the holocaust memorial sits in the center of that city. it is a city where there are no monuments and memorials to adolf hitler and perpetrators like that and violence, but that was achieved because there was a transfer in power. we haven't had that in this country, which means our struggle has been the struggle where we are fighting against institutions and people who are empowered to say no. that, to be, is the brilliance of the civil rights movement. it's the urgency of the moment we are in now. we have to persuade people that holding on to these false ideas, rejecting the truth about our past, not reckoning with this history, it's not only not good for the people who are marginalized and excluded, but it's not good for anybody. we just had a super bowl or two black quarterbacks started that game, and there was a time not that long ago where the narrative was that black people couldn't be quarterbacks!

narrative progress, there has been a counter narrative. when abolitionists began arguing that slavery was wrong, there was a deep commitment to this false idea that black people aren't as good as white people. when activists began saying that mob of violence and lynching was irreconcilable, with the system of the rule of law, there was pushback. in the civil rights era, when activists stirred up and said segregation is wrong and evil, there was the same kind of counter narrative. i think we are having this moment because in the last four or five years, we've made progress in getting people to recognize that we have to reckon honestly with our history, that we need an era of truth and justice, truth and reconciliation, truth and restoration, truth and repair. to undo the damage that has been done by centuries of but like a sea of slavery and lynching, and segregation. i worry about it. you are seeing this in states where people with power are trying to shut down, but i'm still encouraged, because i think history teaches us when
