‘외계인의 목소리’라 불리던 우주 파열음의 진원지가 밝혀진 지 일주일 만에 또 다른 연구 결과가 나왔다. 한 번의 사건으로 이런 파열음이 여러 번 발생할 수 있다는 것이다.
 
우주에서 들리는 ‘라디오 파열음(Fast Radio Burst·FRB)’은 초신성 폭발 등으로 생긴 에너지가 1000분의 1초 만에 ë¹ ë¥´ê²Œ 방출되는 현상으로, 워낙 순간적으로 발생해 기계의 도움 없이는 포착할 수 없다.
 
지난 주 호주 연구진은 파크스전파망원경에 포착된 FRB가 지구에서 60억 광년 떨어진 타원 은하에서 날아온 것이라고 ‘네이처’ 2월 25일자에 발표했다.
 
그리고 불과 일주일 만인 2일 ‘네이처’에는 ë¹…토리아 캡시 캐나다 맥길대 교수팀과 독일 막스플랑크연수소 등 국제 공동 연구진이 한 번의 사건으로 FRB이 여러 차례 ë°œìƒí•  수 있다는 새로운 주장을 ë°œí‘œí–ˆë‹¤.
 
FRB는 2007년 처음 발견된 뒤 지금까지 총 17차례 발견됐으며, 아직까지 폭발의 원인이 명확히 밝혀지지 않고 있다.
 
지금까지 포착된 FRB는 모두 일회성으로 끝났다. íŒŒì—´ìŒì´ 반복적으로 들리지 않아 과학자들은 FRB의 수수께끼를 푸는 데 ì–´ë ¤ì›€ì„ 겪어왔다.
 
캡시 교수가 이끈 연구팀은 푸에르트리코에 위치한 세계 최대 전파망원경인 아레시보 전파망원경을 이용해 지난해 11월 5일 포착한 FRB에 주목했다. 맥길대의 고성능 슈퍼컴퓨터를 이용해 이 FRB를 분석한 결과, 같은해 5월과 7월 그리고 2012년 관측됐던 FRB와 특성이 비슷하다는 사실을 확인했다.
 
연구팀은 이 폭발음이 회전하는 중성자별의 폭발 등으로 인해 발생했으며, 이 별로 인해 발생한 FRB가 10개 이상 될 것으로 추정했다. 폭발 과정에서 주파수가 다른 전파들이 발생했고, 지구로 오는 과정에서 성간물질과 충돌을 거치며 서로 다른 시간대에 지구에 도달한다는 것이다.
 
FRB 신호를 포착한 폴 스콜츠 맥길대 연구원은 “반복되지 않는 것으로 알려진 FRB에 ‘반전’을 제시한 발견이었다”며 “더 강력한 전파망원경을 이용해 추가로 관측한다면 FRB의 수수께끼를 한 층 더 자세히 풀어낼 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.
