allegedly involving u.s. secretary of commerce john bryson. the los angeles county sheriff's department reports secretary bryson was involved in two separate traffic collisions in california towns on saturday. he was found alone and unconscious and hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries after the second incident. authorities say he was cooperative and there is no indication alcohol or drugs played a role. the first collision is under investigation as a felony hit-and-run. in alabama now, a statewide manhunt is under way for a gunman who opened fire at a party this weekend near the campus of auburn university, killing three people and wounding three others. two former auburn football players were among those killed. nbc's kurt gregory has details. >> reporter: a gunman opened fire during a fight at a party held at an offcampus apartment complex near auburn university on saturday night. >> it happened so quick. >> reporter: three were killed in the shooting, including two former auburn university players, edward christian and ladarious phillips. three more were injured. one of whom is a current football player for university. >> it's a very sad time for the auburn community, auburn university, auburn university athletic department. >> head coach gene chizik released a statement, saying in part "my thoughts and prayers are with the families and all of the victims involved in this tragic incident." >> it's not only university students and athletes, but it's young people, it's six young people that have been shot. >> reporter: authorities are hunting for the suspect, desmonte leonard, who's charged with capital murder and considered armed and extremely dangerous. >> we won't rest at the auburn police division until he is located. >> reporter: as the search for the suspect continues. >> i don't know what i'm going to do, you know what i'm saying? might live long or something. i grew up with them. >> reporter: as victims' friends and an entire community search for reasons why. kurt gregory, nbc news. opening statements are scheduled today in the trial of former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky. sandusky is facing 52 criminal counts for the alleged sexual abuse of ten boys over 15 years. some of the alleged victims are expected to testify when prosecutors start presenting their case. they reportedly will also show letters sandusky allegedly wrote to one of his accusers. if convicted, sandusky could spend the rest of his life in prison. here's your "first look" at some of the other news going on around america today. residents near sacramento are experiencing what some may call a nuisance of biblical proportions. an army of locusts are devouring plant life everywhere and homeowners feel hopeless. they are worried they could target vineyards and dairy ranches. over a million mexican freetell bats have transformed an austin bridge into their own cave, but locals are loving it. spectators gather on the bridge just before sunset to watch the night creatures take flight in search of prey. the summer feeding period has become a seasonal spectacle. unusually low tides in central california are giving experts of marine life rare encounters with slimy creatures, gigantic snails, also known as sea hares are showing up, some of them three times their normal size. look at that, wow! finally, a mother and her ducklings brought traffic on a washington freeway to a standstill. police and motorists spent several minutes attempting to secure safe passage for these animals. they didn't make it easy, but the family was eventually relocated safely. time now for a look at the national weather. we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins with a weather channel forecast. that guy there definitely doing his good deed for the day. wouldn't you say? >> humorous, too. >> good deed of a lifetime almost. >> lucky ducks, right? >> yeah, exactly. good morning, everybody. we showed you the amazing pictures of the flooding rains in florida from mobile, alabama, to pensacola. just incredible day on saturday. i mean, this was just off-the-charts rainfall. thunderstorms sat over this region. they didn't move, and it was the second wettest day ever recorded in pensacola, florida. over a foot of rain. officially 13.13. and this is an area that gets hurricanes over the last, obviously, 100 years. and the old record goes back to 1934, which was 15 inches of rain. so i mean, this was still very impressive stuff. and the rain gauge in west pensacola picked up an amazing 21.70 inches of rain, almost 2 feet. that's why they had just incredible flooding. they do have some showers and storms once again it rained a little bit yesterday. now we're getting additional showers and storms because the ground is just super saturated. it's going to be easy to get flash flooding. and so, driving anywhere on the roads down here from mobile to pensacola could be some issues, but right now the thunderstorms are the worst and they're heading up 65 here in through southern portions of alabama. we do have other areas of rain and concerns out there this morning. very heavy rain this morning just north of kansas city, around st. joseph that could shift down on you. and because this moisture down around the gulf is just so super humid, and all of that air mass is heading up the eastern seaboard, so that's why we have additional rain chances anywhere from tennessee, kentucky, through the carolinas, eventually up into virginia, especially tonight and tomorrow. and then by the time we get to tuesday and wednesday, all this moisture will head up into new england for a very rainy period. so, this is just, you know, thanks to the tropics, that tropical air is just heading northward. so, your forecast today, on-and-off rain possible in atlanta. it will be cooler in the southeast with all the clouds around, but we could get some of those downpours from new orleans once again northwards, and the storms could make their way toward chicago this afternoon. veronica, incredible stuff this weekend. we didn't deal with many tornadoes, but flooding was bad enough. >> it was a mess. thanks, bill. a bailout for spain, big speculation over apple and the latest price for dining with the oracle. your "first look" at this morning's business headlines is straight ahead. a thrilling end to the subway series. the orioles have a flair for the dramatics, and the best acting job in baseball. you're watching "first look" on msnbc. welcome back to "first look." i'm veronica de la cruz. here are some of the top stories making news this morning. syrian troops have killed at least 35 people this weekend shelling on the city of homs in an attempt to regain control of the opposition stronghold. former egyptian president hosni mubarak is reportedly slipping in and out of consciousness. mubarak, who was sentenced to life in prison on june 2nd, has had an irregular heartbeat and required assistance in breathing. you probably don't know his name, but you definitely know his face. character actor frank cady has died at age 96. he played the general store owner on "greenacres" in a career that included literally hundreds of shows and films. a letter written in english by napoleon bonaparte in 1816 has been sold for $325,000. the manuscript was written by napoleon while being held captive by the english on the island of st. helena. and legendary western sharpshooter annie oakley's shotgun has been sold at auction for $143,000. oakley became a superstar in the late 1800s, starring in buffalo bill's wild west show. a total of more than $500,000 was paid for about 100 items of annie oakley memorabilia. and now here's our "first look" at this morning's dish of "scrambled politics." as speculation rolls over the republican's veep choice, mike huckabee doesn't think much of his chances, telling nbc this week "i think there's a greater likelihood that i'll be asked by madonna to go on tour as her bass player." well, mike, you never know. former vermont governor howard dean got extreme this weekend, arguing mitt romney wants to take us back to the '50s and not the 1950s, the 1850s, even likened romney to mahmoud ahmadinejad. gabby gifford campaigning this weekend. her husband told politico while she's not sure she wants to run for office again, she does want to get into public service. it's reported the driving records of ten senate candidates show a need for speed. republicans have the dubious edge. six gop candidates have eight speeding convictions, while four democrats have only three. all right, jamie foxx, he wants to be president. okay, well, sorts of. he's in talks to play the president. "a white house down," a thriller about an attack on the white house. a former "west wing" resident, short of. martin sheen thinks the president will soundly beat mitt romney. no romney fan, sheen told "the australian" the race boils down to "a man living an honest life and a hustling politician." ouch. and finally, in a tough week for the president, this could be the biggest blow.
