ALJAZ NEWSHOUR February 4, 2020

plate gets a keeper title but so brave must play 2 games in an empty stadium because of these ugly scenes prior to that final. chaos and confusion reigned in iowa where the democratic party still hasn't released the results from monday's presidential caucus it's blamed a coding issue in the app it was using and says partial results will be released in an hour at $22.00 g.m.t. but president trump a seized on the delay branding it an unmitigated disaster for the democrats from iowa state capital des moines iowa official reports. are. it was a night of frustration and questions in iowa after people cast their votes in the democratic caucuses the process of adding them up and sending them to headquarters was plagued with technical issues it created a terrible image as the country watched the 1st real contests that the 2020 election turned into a farce. the candidates decided to claim victory live on leaving iowa and its problems behind. bernie sanders is looking like the eventual winner the self described democratic socialist finished a not 0 2nd 4 years ago now he believes he's taken a big step to securing the democratic nomination to do you more the beginning of the end for donald trump was here mose dangerous president in modern american history the biggest loser of the night is shaping up to be former vice president joe biden for a man who campaigned on electability it's not clear if you even finish in the top 3 normally that would kill a campaign he played to continue so it's on a new hampshire the of i was south carolina well beyond right there some of. elizabeth warren seems to have made a solid show it was suggested the massachusetts senator would be competing for the same grind with bernie sanders she says the result sends a message tonight has already showed that americans have a deep hunger for big structural change it was also a good night for the youngest candidate in the field here people to judge had no problem the clearing victory by all indications we are going on to new hampshire victorious was. for others there's a question on how long they can sustain their campaign though for 2 years of beginning to have their say. on the republican side no technical problems and a clear and predictable when for president donald trump has 2 opponents but even getting 3 percent of the vote. and allen joins us live now from des moines iowa no we're still expecting around half of the results in our. well that's what they're suggesting although we're hearing there is the possibility there could be legal challenges a couple of the campaigns have already expressed in a conference call with the democratic party of iowa that releasing half the results is not satisfactory because people will think that there was are the final results and certainly one of the biggest voices against that idea is the joe biden campaign because we don't think they've done terribly well and so they want all the results to be released at the same time so here we are more than 12 hours after we should have had the results and it's still a mess this is turned in to a real farce for the democratic party they had not just the whole country but the whole world watching this was the 1st vote in the 2020 election campaign we should have got an idea from the democrats who they thought was the best candidate to take on donald trump in november what we've got is simply confusion and the democrats of course are facing more and more criticism from the republicans for the way they've handled this not only are the republicans saying look this is the party that wants to change health care and run it look at how they can organize a very small caucus in a very small state. but there is obviously a campaign from the trump site to put out messages that are saying look the longer this is delayed is a sign that this is being rigged and not just please into the paranoia that some people had 4 years ago that it was all rigged in behalf of hillary clinton so they're enjoying this moment they think the only real victory last night was donald trump which is true because if you look at the other side the republican caucus he won with 97 percent of the vote far more than the support he enjoys in the republican party in general and so this was just a really bad night for the democrats they're trying to put a spin on it but there's no sign of it getting any better i suppose if there is one bright spot for them that the next contest down the line is in new hampshire after that it's nevada nevada is another caucus and the people there have said they use the up no i don't think we will they're just going to go back to the old paper style of counting votes so once all this is kind of settled down what will it mean just think in the end for the democrats in this important actually. well to know and normally when you come out of iowa someone has momentum that they've done better than expected they're doing really well it gives them a lift and support it gives them a lift in fundraising they go into new hampshire with renewed vigor that's all been taken away this time so what we've got to try and do is look at what we think the results are likely to be and how that will impact the race here's a really telling point it's the morning it's the afternoon after the iowa caucus and normally by this point with a field of 11 you would expect a number of people to say you know we're not going to do very well here so we're dropping out of the race no one has done that here so what do the results tell as well looking at the returns that were made public we think that bernie sanders is going to have a very good iowa caucus it looks as if he's going to win 4 years ago of course it came at night it was 2nd he's been building his support in that time so it looks as if he will go into new hampshire with a bit of momentum people to judge is perhaps the big surprise people thought he was doing quite well looks as if he might finish 2nd that's far better than the best expectations elizabeth warren good solid 3rd chill expect to do better in new hampshire she's a massachusetts senator there right next door so she's got name recognition there and then joe biden badly has he done here's a guy who talked about electability looks as if you'll finish 4th could possibly funny 5th behind him equal bashar. so that's what we extract fully of that but you know in a month's time will be into super tuesday when a number of states hold their caucuses and primaries people will almost of or go in the iowa real political. people who really and truly political narrative let's call them the political nerds will not forget just how iowa has performed and you know there are many people who think the iowa shouldn't have the 1st in the nation contest to decide who the candidates are they think it's too white it's not dusty left doesn't really reflect america they've been i do teaching for something else this will just adds to their campaign and it's really going to be difficult for iowa to argue against it alan fischer thank you very much indeed. well the republican and democratic leaders of the u.s. senate have had a heated exchange ahead of a vote in president trump's impeachment trial trump is widely expected to be acquitted on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of congress on wednesday last week the senate rejected the chance to hear from additional witnesses democrats senate leader accused the republicans of hiding the truth on the senate republican leader mitch mcconnell denounced the democrats' move to impeach john it's hard to believe that house democrats ever really thought this reckless and precedent breaking process would yield $67.00 votes across the rubicon was their vision so clouded by partisanship that they really believed they really believed this would be anywhere near enough for the 1st presidential removal in american history or was success beside the point or is this all an effort to hijack our institution for a month long political rally. the majority leader can come up on the floor and repeat his talking points but there are some salient points that are irrefutable the 1st this is the 1st impeachment trial of the president or a trial impeachment trial of anybody else that was completed that has no witnesses and no documents the american people are just amazed that our republican friends would not even ask for witnesses and documents. if you as president trump will deliver his state of the union address on the eve of his expected impeachment a quick acquittal he is expected to use the speech as a reelection platform focusing on jobs and the economy which is a response house correspondent kimberly how could reports during the senate impeachment trial to decide whether to remove have provide office u.s. president donald trump said he'd like to address his accusers directly sort of lovesick right there front row and stare their corrupt faces on tuesday he'll get the chance when he delivers his annual state of the union address to the u.s. congress it will be the 1st time trump speaks to lawmakers as a president who has been impeached it will also come just one day before trump's impeachment trial is expected and with an acquittal. meanwhile administration officials insist the president who likes to go on the attack will instead focus on his successes. the speeches titled the great american comeback trouble is expected to tout the solid job market low unemployment and health care advances. trump will also continue to promote his wall of the southern border which is caustic the u.s. billions of dollars in spite of his promise that mexico would pay for it foreign policy officials are being deliberately vague on the content but expect the ongoing trade war with china to get at least a mention and the killing of ice a leader abu bakar albert dati by u.s. forces in october as well but 6 6. last year trump delivered his remarks as the justice department conducted an investigation into allegations trump's campaign worked with the russians if there is going to be peace and legislation there cannot be war and investigation but aside from that brief mention trump steered clear of any vitriol and that's why it's so incumbent on this president to look presidential so this is an opportunity for the president to actually set the stage for what another 4 year term in office will look like with president trump's expected acquittal in the senate both republicans and democrats are now leaving the decision on trump's future to u.s. voters in november election can really help get al jazeera the white house rose and jordan joins us live now from washington d.c. it seems like the state of the union speech is coming in a good week for trouble. well it appears to be the case and one thing that is worth pointing out is that when a white house spokesperson was ousted on tuesday whether the president would address the question of impeachment the spokesperson told reporters on the white house grounds that the president would avoid the matter we'll see of course if that is in case in fact the case on tuesday evening here in the united states it is worth pointing out that in the meantime the white house has put out a list of the guests that will be sitting with the 1st lady malani a trump during the president's address and these people even though they might have compelling life stories have been chosen it appears to fit in with some of the themes of the president's reelection campaign a very conservative campaign rubric including a supporting public tax dollars for private school education otherwise known as school choice continuing the president's anti iran foreign policy taking a look at his immigration policy and highlighting the damage that in the president's view immigrants have caused to the united states and then there's a bit of foreign policy in the shape of the u.s. is attempts to try to change the government in venezuela a former police chief evil seaman all of it from gattaca who was imprisoned for about 15 years according to the white house will be one of the people sitting in the 1st lady's box and that's because it is believed that he is going to represent the will of the venezuelan people who are opposed to the government of karl's model and before him this is in jordan thank you very much indeed. coming up on the news are from london. 'd parents in shock as they struggle to understand how and why 14 of their children died in a stampede at a kenyan school. global health experts warn more investment is needed to stop the cancer survival gap between rich and poor nations getting wider. and the asian champions league is the latest sporting event affected by the corona virus outbreak peter as the south. china has admitted shortcomings in its response to the corona virus outbreak several asian countries have recorded more cases of the coronavirus in people who have not traveled from china but the world health organization says it's not yet a pandemic which is when a disease has spread across a large region or the world is calling it an epidemic with a number of hotspots but says it's showing no signs of mutation and is proving quite stable. when you deal with epidemic you regularly sees that in addition to the epidemic of diseases we often have an epitome of information and this is what we call in for demick and it's really an e.p. dimmick of rumors of false information that is circulating at the same time and every outbreak as it's in for dimmick and so we have realized over time that this in for them it could be really. they called for a good response and one for effective implementation of countermeasures meanwhile a number of deaths in china has continued to grow rising sharply this week to 427 with more than 20000 cases diagnosed hong kong has now reported its 1st deaths from the virus and in the 2nd outside of mainland china and neighboring macau as nonce that all its casinos will close for 2 weeks aaron brown reports from hong kong. as hong kong confirmed its 1st death from the virus a quarter of its doctors and nurses went on strike seriously affecting emergency services several 100 demonstrated outside the offices of their employer hong kong's health authority they say the complete closure of hong kong's border with the mainland would help prevent the disease spreading their members of the new union born out of the protest movement politics have now entered this growing public health emergency headline thing i hope the government quickly listens to our demands quickly closes all the borders and brings this epidemic under control by choose day 10 of the 13 border crossing points with the mainland were closed but the bridge to china remains open now one of the few ways into or out of hong kong when this bridge opened almost 3 years ago it stood as a symbol of the deepening links between hong kong and china today it stands as a symbol of the few board. links that now remain between the 2. hong kong's leader kerry lamb is resisting calls for a total shut down of the front here saying it would go against the guidelines of the world health organization and rejects accusations that her administration is the one playing politics i certainly would not agree with the allegation that we are sort of they're not addressing this public health concern adequately and suddenly i don't agree with the allegation that we are putting politics about public health the economic fallout from this emergency has spread to the nearby gambling hub of macau popular with mainland tourists all casinos will be closed for 2 weeks in a new hand a new hospital built in just 9 days has begun treating patients another 3 mobile hospitals are being assembled in a rare move china's government has appealed to the outside world for help saying vital medical equipment is needed including more face masks and protective clothing for medical workers doctors also say there's a shortage of testing kits are in another unusual development china's top leadership has admitted to shortcomings and failures in its response to the crisis the politburo standing committee chaired by president xi jinping warned that officials who failed in their duty would be punished that amounts to a public acknowledgement that they failed the people adrian brown al-jazeera hong kong scott hyder is in beijing he explains how chinese officials are reacting to criticism of their response to the virus. you know they've said that their short comings and difficulties in the way that they've dealt with this so far you know that that kind of goes from the low levels of government all the way up to the 7 most powerful leaders here in china know 2 times since this crisis has really surfaced over the last 10 days the pope or a standing committee has met that's the 7 most powerful leaders in this nation led by xi jinping the president and they met just within the last 32 hours 24 hours and they said that there were short comings and problems with the way that this was handled so obviously that's a big admission now later in the day we heard from the health commission the national health commission and they said that they do not yet see what they called a turning point a century when the numbers of those infected and deaths related to corona virus they haven't plateaued or they haven't gone down so right now it's still on that upward trajectory so there hasn't been a turning point just yet they say that they you know they're expanding their resources every hour you know they built a new hospital on monday specific to the coronavirus patients they're building another what they've been building another one that should open in a day or 2 probably the next 24 hours so they'll have about 2500 hospital beds new hospital beds to deal with the crisis so they're saying it's very challenging but they're trying to really step up to the challenge right now and obviously they're catching up as well they say that they need more medical supplies particularly the masks and the garments that the health workers have to wear when they treat those infected they say they're turning up the manufacturing that in country but they've also asked for help to emergency procurement of those types of materials outside the country as well. a major kamakura suspending production in south korea because the coronavirus outbreak is disrupting the supply of composites from china i and i'm otis has become the 1st major or to make a to halt operations outside china it rise heavily on imported parts from beijing the comic has 7 factories in south korea which account for about 40 percent of its global output and on notice is not specified when production schedules could return to normal let's talk more on the economic impact of the corona virus outbreak with china analyst to gordon chang joins us live from toronto thanks so much for being with us so already we've had one large car company saying it's got supply chain problems and had to suspend production how big an effect do you think this is going to have on the global economy well i think it's certainly going to get bigger and bigger you know china right now says oh they're kind of won't grow less than 5 percent for the 1st quarter but that i think is not credible because 1st of all it was growing at a much slower pace anywhere but also we learned yesterday that china's oil demand is now 20 percent lower than it was this time last year and that's indication that the chinese economy is in negative territory so there will be effects that will ripple through and especially because this coronaviruses going to ravage china were few more months people are saying it might not be until april or may do some cities and that's an indication that this will go on and it will affect global supply chains more than just how you end up and indeed on that front i mean they've in some cases people did extend just extended the holidays to keep people to reduce the spread of it is t
