it is 10 p.m. in israel where prime minister benjamin netanyahu rejected u.s. calls for a humanitarian pause in its war against hamas. telling secretary of state antony blinken that we are going full steam ahead unless hostages are released. the idf has confirmed that its encirclement of gaza city complete on focus on dismantling hamas following terror attacks that occurred four weeks ago today let's go right to trey yingst live in jerusalem with a exclusive look inside the idf military operations inside gaza. trey. reporter: good evening today for the first time in 29 days, the israeli military a lot of small group of journalist into the gaza strp to see first hand thierptions against hamas. take a look. right now we're in a armor carrier and cut in half and fought their way to the mediterranean sea and encircled gaza city they're waiting now for orders to go further had. seconds after arriving on the outskirts of gaza city track of gunfire pierces the air. >> right now we're in -- israeli troops move carefully over mounds of dirt and debris they understand hamas can target them from above and below ground. >> we find two tunnels and -- now we're going destroy them. >> the distance black smoke billows from the skyline. as israeli forces take positions on nearby rooftops. [sound of gunfire] you can hear what gunfire in the distance. the vallis are trying to engage anyone who tries to ambush their forces in the battle street by street it is urban -- warfare as hamas's popping out of tunnels and ambushing israeli troops. eight days ago israelis invaded with two missions. to hunt down hamas leadership, and bring hostages home. the latter proving to be far more difficult. >> we know that hostages most of them inside gaza city and inside suburb area and underneath city. when doing everything we can in order to free them -- >> lieutenant colonel is fighting his third war. the 38-year-old is in charge of five battalions his soldiers include those like jeremiah wallace originally from philadelphia. he moved to israel and joined army now he points to why the war began. >> whatever happened on october 7th never happens again. reporter: as the ground war continues, hamas and islamic jihad still firing rockets into southern and central israel 29 days into this conflict. paul. paul: thank you trey. let's bring in fox news senior strategic analyst far star general what do you think of the military strategy and how it's unfolding and how much progress they're making so far? >> well, certainly their national leadership signed a tough mission to the israeli military and that is -- to rengd or to hamas military and terrorist organization ineffective in term of its capabilities, obviously, to change the political epghtty of hamas governing gaza. and that's completely different than the other military encourage where they're going for a number of weeks go hard and fast, kill as many as they could, destroy as much infrastructure as they could, and then get out as soon as they could. so this operation is characterized being slow, deliberate they were encircling gaza as an example of that and clearing operations inside of gaza certainly focusing on where most of that military infrastructure and leaders are, and that's in this extensive and comprehensive tunnel complex. and obviously, they will go very slowly and dealing with this because the -- the hamas terrorist can pop up at any place and they really need 360-degree situational awareness. paul, we already know that given casualties that have taken place right now, in just the first week of the war, that's twice as number of casualty days that they have experienced experience past and it gives you a concern because this war will likely go on for weeks for sure. but many months more likely -- and that is upper most in their minds is number of casualties they may sustain through this operation. >> all right so you heard the secretary of state anthony blinken in israel ask the israelis for a humanitarian pause for allowing aid to get into gaza as well as time for hostage negotiations. what do you make of that recommendation? was netanyahu right to resist it? >> yeah. i actually think he is. i mean, when you look at this operation tactically on the ground if we stopped and given where all of the troops are prepght they're not outside of gaza behind their own lines. they're in the middle of one of the most dangerous spots that i can conceptionallize in my own behind tunnel complexes all around them. that is a very -- dangerous situation and he doesn't want to stop because he knows he's going take casualty and he knows hamas will take advantage of this situation. not only to attack his troops, but to regroup, to reorganize themselves. and make -- doesn't make much sense tactically i still think that we can get people out through the southern portal. at rafa we can still get things in through that -- portal of rafa, obviously, trying to get they will all away to gaza city that will be a challenge for sure that's why the israelis told as many of those people to get out. i think about 800,000 have gotten outs and i wouldn't be surprised that the 300,000 that are still there many of the hamas leadership are holding them in place for their own protection. >> you -- obviously have experience in the laws of war. answer a question for me about the civilian casualties which would be in gaza become such a focus of critics of israel. when are civilian casualties a war crime and when are they not? >> they're not a war crime if they're distinctal to what you're attempting to do. you're attempting to conduct a military operation to kill military targets and if civilians incidental to that then that's not a war crime if you're targeting civilians, then it is a war crime. and that is, obviously, what hamas did in brutal savage attack changed focus from the past on israeli soldiers with a primary focus was on civilian and, of course, it was butchery at that. what you see in ukraine by rush russia they have in government area in kyiv complete focus of breaking the will war crime to be sure. paul: what do you make of the speech, the hezbollah leader hassan gave on friday, and do you think that the -- is he eager is he reluctant rather to open a second front and do you think that american deterrence with the carrier groups and the med are maybe making a difference? >> yeah. a couple of things well certainly it was a fiery speech talking about the success of the lebanon beirut operation with a blew up our tour of our embassy and and we did pull our troops out as a result of that. i'm not here to relitigate that. and totally takes that as success and then all of the other proxy things that have happened that iran has organized in the middle east. are successful from their perspective but i think he has a certain reluctance that 2006 war with the israelis have much as israelis left with a tale between their legs all of the service were fired the impact on lebanon was significant. they truly haven't recovered from that economically. i doubt seriously based on his tone that he's reluctant to really expand war beyond a limited military operations he's doing at the board unless he's pushed by iran to commit. because of this success that the military operation in gaza is unfolding. >> all right general keane thanks so much for being here very -- good to see you still ahead our panel weighs in on the politics of a pause by israel here at home. as president biden facing growing democratic desent over his support for israel. my brain. so i choose new neuriva ultra. unlike some others, it supports 7 brain health indicators, including mental alertness from one serving. to help keep me sharp. try new neuriva ultra. think bigger. welcome to ameriprise. i'm sam morrison. my brother max recommended you. so my best friend sophie says you've been a huge help. at ameriprise financial, more than 9 out of 10 of our clients are likely to recommend us. our neighbors, the garcias, love working with you. because the advice we give is personalized, hey, john reese, jr. how's your father doing? >> of course he's right. i mean, first of all these democratic senators are playing to their domestic constituents who are out running these protests and putting all of the focus on this civilians who are dying in palestinian. palestine but the fact of the matter is in gaza i should say. but the fact of the matter that the merle -- military cannot do this pause it is preposterous they're in the middle as we saw earlier when we they let news report rs into gaza yeah. they're in the middle of a very dangerous battlefield you can't just all of a sudden step back and say okay we're just going to wait here for a bit and you know other thing is that this pressure is designed to get a result had is hostages and we hear lots of complaining from the democrats about -- the humanitarian losses. but we don't hear much about the fact they're still holding some 240 hostages. >> you can make a case dan for a pause if you really thought it would yield hostages and save their lives but likely outcome is for hamas to dribble them out to two or three and get a prop propaganda game that's a leverage they have. >> absolutely and maw make a good point because we have had no evidence or indication whatsoever from the other side from hamas that they're willing to do any such thing. all of the pressure has been completely on the side of the israelis. and indeed we should try to think through this pause a little bit. presumably it means that israeli stand down let's assume for the sake of discussion they do that for two days, for three days to allow something humanitarian aid to flow through. at the end of the pause presumably israel resumes its fighting then we're back to the same situation we're in right now and, of course, they'll be more calls for another pause. how can the israelis agree to something like that? plus -- you might make the argument by israel going through gaza and opening it up, they will probably do more may do more for human tarn existence than if they paused today they open the main highway from the north down to the south. if palestinians topght leave up there they're now free to pass down through into the south. paul: kyle, the democratic pressure, though, as mary suggested from the left is building. on joe biden, and the tone markettedly that president biden has had shifted this last week where he, you know, stall -- support for israel has been stallwork no question request about it but shifted and came out for the pause do you think it is for the pressure from the democratic left? >> they're being explicit about we will stay home and not vote for you in some of the states particularly michigan, where he needs to win in 2024. if you do not call for a cease-fire, but the problem is that he has i think many members both of the democratic party and the broader electorate independent who is accept the kind of arguments that you're hearing here. which is that, maybe there would be a case for a pause if you can give over those 240 hostages including children that hamas is still holding. but you don't see any indication of that instead you have a member of hamas political bureau going on tv in lebanon saying what happened on october 7th was justified and we will do it again and again and again. paul: mary let's shift to the aid for israel which passed house this week $14 billion along with some cuts to funding for the irs. that passed the last year -- but that bill is not going anywhere on its own in the senate. president biden said he would veto it. but is there any doubt in your mind that we're going end up passing sol aid for israel here at the end of the day? >> i think we will for sure egg there's enough bipartisan support both sides of the aisle that will let that what. i mean question is what is attached to it and this week we have a little bit of chatter about possibility doing something asylum law in the border in order to satisfy republicans who are concerned about, you know, the fact that you have so many people coming across without even actually being judged as graduating asylum but getting into the country because they have credible fear so there's some talk maybe they're going to adjust that law i think -- you know if i were president biden i would grab that. because -- he can blame it on the republicans. but it will also help him and making the border a little less porous. >> across biden presidency he's been -- he's been reluctant to take the party left and strong on israel for a month. i wonder if he's willing to do that on immigration whatever else he needs to do to get that aid through and not just aid for israel but aid for ukraine. >> i think the simple sanction no he will not take on his party's left mainly because they've decided that younger democratic voters seem to be planed -- opposing military aid for israel. they are part of the left now. joe biden numbers have been falling. he needs all of the democratic voters he can get. so he's in an unfortunate situation i have to say. ideally i think we're talking about helping ukraine, helping israel doing something that is octavely important that ultimately joe biden probably should step down in allow the democrats to have an open fight -- i know they're not going to talk about that right now. but he is so far behind that he keeps playing to the left wing constituents he's going to get in the way of helping ukraine and israel. >> quite a way to end segment dan all right when we come become a stark warning from the fbi amaster's degree a surge in anti-semitism on u.s. college campuses and beyond. causing a lack of sharpness, or even trouble with recall. thankfully, the breakthrough in prevagen helps your brain and actually improves memory. the secret is an ingredient originally discovered... in jellyfish. in clinical trials, prevagen has been shown to improve short-term memory. prevagen. at stores everywhere without a prescription. nice footwork. man, you're lucky, watching live sports never used to be this easy. now you can stream all your games like it's nothing. yes!
