right now, democrats are taking what lessons they can from last week's election. still riding high on big winds. that -- overperform. but the outlook in 2024 from the white house and now the senate is -- with the news that west virginia senator joe manchin, west virginia senator joe manchin is retiring, leaving a deep red state up for grabs. and polling continues to show president biden underperforming with democratic voting blocks. -- get reelected next year. meanwhile, the presidents presumed opponent in 2024, donald trump, is ratcheting up his rhetoric on the campaign trail, calling his rivals vermin, and touting an immigration policy amidst -- deportation, even more extreme than his first term. all this as his fraud trial is set to resume monday in new york. i last amok reddick -- jimmy harrison, how democrats should respond to all of this ahead of 2024. -- from the son charles five, to new york city council district nine -- joins me tonight. days after his resounding city council win. and trust me, you don't want to miss this very personal take on donald trump's legal troubles. that's later. we start tonight with jaime harrison, chair of the democratic national committee. mister chairman, thank you for being with us. i want to talk to you about the democratic wins at the polls last week. but first, i want to look forward, in spite of some favorable signs for your party. many are understandably concerned about polling, showing biden trailing in most battleground states, losing support with black, hispanic, and young voters. what's your feeling about 2024 now, less than a year out? >> well, rave, my feeling about 2024 is the same -- midterms in 2022. listen, hand wringing about polls doesn't win elections. but registering voters does. mobilizing those voters. educating those voters and reaching out to them. protecting them once they go to the polls. and we have shown in the midterms that folks counted the democratic party out, and joe biden out. we should get this last tuesday. they counted the site. joe biden showed them in 2020. you bet against joe biden and the democrats, you're certain to lose. and we are mobilizing. we are registering. we are educating our voters, and we're gonna get our voters out to the polls on election day in 2024, like we've done the last three election cycles. so rev, i'm pretty confident. what we saw on tuesday was that maga extremism in the republican party lost, and lost big. and when democrats won, freedom one. democracy won. women controlling their own bodies, having their own reproductive rights secured, that one in virginia, in ohio. so we're gonna continue down that path, and i'm really confident. >> let me stop you right there. because voters in ohio voted in favor of reproductive rights tuesday, and abortion helped drive democrats to victory in virginia where they now corol both chambers of the assembly. activists are now pushing for 2024 ballot measures, protecting abortion access in states like arizona, south dakotamiouri, and florida. many believe the issue could help drive turnout and benefit biden as well as down ballot candidates. as dnc chair, do you share that view? >> i think it's really, really important. they have a measure right now that they're trying to get signatures on in florida. and as we know, there are important elections happening in florida next year. rick scott is on the ballot there. it's one of the target senate races. we know that in kentucky, even in the kentucky race for governor, the issue of abortion was front and center and discussed there as well. so we won in kansas on this particular issue. we know the republicans are extreme. we can try to sugarcoat it. nikki haley and some of the others can try to dance around the extremism but they've supported time and time again. but ultimately, we know if they get into power, they want extreme national bans on abortion in every state. not just the red states. not just the purple states. but also in the blue states. so people have to stand up. if you don't want your freedoms ripped away from you, then don't vote for a republican. because they will. they will focus on doing just that. >> now let's talk about kentucky, where democrat andy beshear cruised to reelection, proving on his 2019 numbers in a republican dominated state. as a fellow southern democrat, what is governor beshear doing right, and what can others learn from him in the race in kentucky this past tuesday? >> you know, the republicans tried to tag him as a national democrat, this in that. but at the end of the day, what andy did -- he ran a pitch perfect race. he had an abortion -- straight into the point about what was at stake. but andy also ran on how he was building a new kentucky. how he was bringing in resources. leveraging national, but also local to build an economy for kentucky and for all the people that he was straight into the point. no chaser. that's what we've got to do. we've got a drill down so we don't have all this theoretical stuff. let's drill down to how we are improving peoples lives. how are making it better for them and their families in their communities, and andy did just that. he proved that even in the -- democrat with the right message, with the right organization on the ground, can win. >> i want to ask you about presidential front runner donald trump he referred to his political opponents as vermin during his campaign speech yesterday and new hampshire. and in a veterans day post on his truth social platform. the new york times reports that trump is planning a massive expansion of his first term immigration policies, including mass roundup of undocumented migrants to be held in camps. a more extreme version of the so-called muslim ban. as well as deportations without due process. what are democrats doing to put trump's second term magenta front and center in 2024? >> we, are gonna put it out there. the bottom line is this. there's all this third-party noise -- one more, it's looking like this race will be between joe biden, a man who stands for freedom and democracy, and donald trump. a man who is unhinged. and folks, don't play around with this. i think our democracy and our freedoms, our livelihoods, are too important to be playing games with. we've got to be very, very clear eyed about this. if donald trump gets back into the white house, understand what he brings with him. this unhinged, revenge politics. even heard today that ronna mcdaniel, who's the chair of the rnc, said that even if he's convicted, she still, and the rnc is still going to support this guy. because it's all about power. it's not about how they improve the lives of everybody in this country. it's not about leadership. it's not about making america the best for all of america's people. it's about one man and his own revenge politics. and that's not who we are. the statue of liberty says, bringing the tired and the poor >> those humble masses that you want to be free. >> that's right. >> jim, we're out of time, but have to ask you. you are black man, i'm a black man. they're saying that black women are now going in larger numbers to donald trump. some of them are saying, well, i don't know with joe biden and kamala harris has done for me. what say you? >> i say this. joe biden and kamala harris wake up each and every day thinking how they can improve the lives of all americans. but specifically black americans. we want to make sure that you can provide for your family, that you have security, financial and also physical security for your families. that's what white men want. that's what i want with my two boys and my wife. i'm writing with biden, because i understand that this president has been fighting for just that. and i'm looking forward to going -- country, as i've already been, making sure that we make the case to black men, black women, the black community at large. because if you look at what this president has done, time and time again, he has stood with the african american community. removing the primaries so that -- african american gets to decide. put a black woman on the supreme court, but also the policies. even when republicans stood in the way, rev, on george floyd, justice and policing act, this president acted with his executive power. he can do much more. but we've got to give him the help in the house and in the senate in order to get it done. >> right in with biden. i think i heard a slogan. haven't heard that one. thank you, dnc chair jaime harrison, for being with us tonight. joining me now is democratic ohio congresswoman chantal brown. thank you for being on the show again, congresswoman. let me go right to it. and less than a week, the federal government runs out of money. the spending -- newly elected speaker mike johnson. yesterday his strong criticism from democrats, and even some republicans. will you vote for it, and do you have any confidence a deal can be worked out before the deadline? >> happy sunday. good evening, rev. it's always good to be with you. it's a tough act to follow, our chairman dnc, with that slogan, riding for biden. but let me tell you -- why not anything that any democrats are willing to support. even the notion of -- confusing, convoluted, and the last thing that the speaker needs to be doing is add more chaos and confusion to our congress. listen. president biden put forth a package. he sent it to congress, and it included israel, ukraine, strengthening our border, addressing priorities and domestic issues like childcare. and that's what i would be willing to support. >> switching gears to the news out of your home state of ohio, voters in your state turned out tuesday to pass a constitutional amendment protecting abortion rights, en after republicans tried every trick in the book to kill the measure, including trying to raise the threshold for victory and changing the wording of the ballot a measure. can you talk a bit about what it took to achieve this victory? because i did reports on the ground from people in ohio. they -- saying vote no, this time now they say vote yes, in cabinets -- briefly explain what it took to get this victory. >> shutout to doctor cabinets and dr. mccoy and all the builders and volunteers who work hard to make sure that we could successfully pass issue one. if she won with simply about maintaining the ability to make your own health care decisions without the interference of the government, and without fear of being criminalized. but the republicans would have you believe otherwise. so it took a lot of work. we did roundtables and rallies. i invested money towards radio advertising. text messaging. robocalls. it was a team effort from the o dp to our local party organizations. it was all hands on deck. because the stakes were entirely too high. and right on brand, with the republicans, they cannot handle defeat. it is right in line with their election denying ways. so now, they're trying to upend and overturn the voice of the voters. something that seems to be a trend as it relates to the gop. they are not about putting people over politics. and even maga mike went as far as to say that in one of his fundraising letters, that he refused to put people before politics. but what democrats have been doing time and time again is delivering for other people. we're gonna continue no matter what efforts they tried to -- suffocate in silence the voice of the virus. we're gonna continue to work hard, to make sure that we maintain freedom, and protect our fragile democracy. because we know that this is a gift, not a guarantee. >> it's been a little while since we had you on, i wanted to ask you about this, last month the food and drug administration proposed a rule banning hazardous ingredients and chemical straightening products or relax or's, which are primarily marketed to black women. following a letter from you and other lawmakers caught into an investigation of the health risks back in the spring. what's your latest hearing on this? >> i couldn't be more pleased that they have taken the initiative to take the first step and congresswoman pressley deserves a lot of credit along with me, we lead this initiative with several lawmakers, i'm very pleased that the fda is taken this first step. we'll do everything we can to make sure that this is finalized. >> while i have you, i wanted to ask you about the sense of your college michigan state congressman, rashida tlaib, has the house voted on tuesday to rebuke her overstatements regarding the israel-hamas war. 22 of your democratic colleagues joined most republicans to pass a resolution that accuses the congresswoman of, quote, calling for the description of the state of israel citing a usage of the phrase, from the river to the sea. she has the sole palestinian american in congress, while i know you voted no on this, what have been your thoughts, what i've been the fallout since the vote? >> let me say this, rashida tlaib, it is a colleague and someone who i respect is the only palestinian in congress. i appreciate the fact that she is often feeling isolated and alone in that way. we need to as a democracy value those opinions that may be different from ours. and so, as it relates to her position we disagree, but we do agree that there should be some humanitarian aid, i for one will always support the right for israel to defend itself. i can't speak for the other 22 democrats but what we need to do is keep the lines of communication open. if we censured everyone, reverend al, at that we agree with think -- we wouldn't get anything done. and it's 118 congress that has been led by the conference of chaos and confusion. this certainly does not help, i wish they'd focus their efforts on dealing with issues that are important to the american people. again, dealing with president biden's proposal to make sure we're providing aid to israel, ukraine, is strengthening our border, addressing priorities that are important to the american people like childcare. these are the things that are the hearts, minds of my constituents in the ohio 11th congressional district. i really hate the fact that republicans are wasting our time, our dollar, our resources on things like this. i really want to get back to doing the peoples business and again, putting people over politics, that was partisan -- it was not serious at all. >> isn't it part of the political strategy of the far-right to play culture issues, issues like this, clearly, as you said, everyone that voted no was not an agreement with what was said. but that it felt like people, once we get into that where does the right of a congress person to say something began and end, clearly on the other side. do you think that the way that the democrats, as you just acknowledged we had democratic situations before you. the democrats ought to prepare for the politics of distractions, the right-wing will try to do with culture wars, things like this, so they don't need to deal with the substantial issues that people said you and your colleagues to washington for?
