sunday, july 29th i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. i was actually pretty cool when i left the house this morning for a july day. let's get to rosemary. >> you are right. cloudy. slightly cool out there. outside our doors in some places we will continue with our warmup today. but ever so slightly we are talking 2-4 degrees above what we felt on saturday. i'll break it down for you. show you the broader view and what you can expect outside your door. right now 25,000 people are taking on the san francisco marathon. the elite runners started about 90 minutes ago. ktvu allie rasmus joins us live with what is happening now and how you can get around that race. >> reporter: 24,000 people have signed up for this case. you've got to keep in mind most don't come here alone. thousands of their friends and supporters have come to san francisco to watch the start of the san francisco marathon. that is the starting line behind us. there are several different groups running in waves. so right now we are between groups we are waiting for another group to start here. we got here at 5:30 this morning to watch the elite runners start the race. >> three, two, one, you're off. >> reporter: the 26-mile course takes marathoners from the embarcadero all the way across the golden gate bridge and back again through golden gate back. now before they got started we talked some of the elite runners the people at the front line of the race about why the san francisco marathon is considered one of the most challenging in the nation. >> there will be a few hills. it will probably be pretty hard. >> it looks hilly compared to a lot of them. >> reporter: now we will show you a live picture coming up here of the golden gate bridge. you can see hundreds of marathoners have already made it to the halfway point of the race. the golden gate bridge is the halfway point. after they get across the bridge they have to go to the marin side and run back. they will make their way through golden gate park. as you can imagine with 24,000 people and tens of thousands more coming here to watch, this will tie up traffic a little bit until 10:00 this morning. you can expect road closures. we have a map of the course to show you. mike and claudine will bring that to you in a few minutes. >> thanks. let's show you that map. that race will take runners thud fisherman's wharf through the marie that and across the bridge. the finish line is just under the bay bridge. you can expect delays. this is a qualifying event for the boston marathon. an investigation into what sparked a house fire in east oakland is under way this morning. it started around 4:00 a.m. on 63rd avenue. the fire was in a vacant back house that homeless people may have been living in. a woman living in the front of the house said she heard someone yell fire early this morning. >> i looked out my bedroom window, seen the whole trees on fire. the front of the house on fire. ran downstairs and grabbed my kids and ran outside. >> the gas was turned on inside the home. no one was hurt in that fire. >> it will take some time before an oakland convenient store can reopen. an suv crashed into a liquor store. and left a gaping hole in the wall. there were in customers at the time just a store owner and worker. >> all i heard was a loud noise. a lot of dust. >> reporter: were you scared? >> i was shocked. >> the store owners hand was hit by flying debris. the suv sustained damage on the front end of the soak. police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. they are calling it an accident with the driver losing control of the suv. bart station reopened after a shooting investigation. someone fired shots on the concourse level just before 10:00 last night. no one was injured but police closed the station for two hours searching for the gunman. an eight-year-old girl is one of two people recovering after being shot at bay point. deputies say the girl and 22- year-old man were inside the house on franklin avenue yesterday afternoon when someone started shooting at the home. the girl was shot in the leg and her family says she is doing okay. the man also has injuries that are not life threatening. the family says they don't know why they would be targeted. >> it's so much of shooting going on and they are involving the kids. it's like they have no heart or nothing they don't stop when they see the kids they keep shooting. when is it going to stop? >> the contra costa county sheriffs office say the gunman drove away in a black honda sedan. a hotel was forced to evacuate after a fire broke out. the fire caused about 13,000 in damage. firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire but say it started near a mattress. with 99 days until the november 6th election president obama and mitt romney are planning their final pushes. the obama campaign says it has thousands of informal events scheduled across the nation including olympic watch parties and get togethers called barbecues for barack. some undecided voters are struggling over which first candidate to vote for. they are unsure about romney and what he can bring to the white house. just before 9:00 pacific time this morning romney will deliver a policy speech in jerusalem. romney is pledging to back an israeli strike against iran. to prevent iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. romney has insisted on a zero tolerance policy for iran. >> incapable of becoming a nuclear nation. i look forward to chatting with you about further actions we can take. >> romney added that he's honored to visit israel on a jewish holiday. a potential running mate for romney is marco rubio. rubio went to his old elementary school to speak for romney. he says romney is for free enterprise. senator rubio had a bit of a scare flying out of las vegas. his private plane was heading to des moines, iowa when it had to make an emergency landing in albuquerque. a possible electrical problem. rubio missed the romney campaign event in iowa but called in by phone. olympic organizers are investigating why some seats at olympic venues are empty. jeremy hunt says the empty seats were very disappointing. he believes they belong to sponsors. tickets have been extremely difficult to come by. police in london say they have arrested 16 people sense friday for illegally reselling tickets to events. here's a look at the current medal count. china leads with six. four of which are gold. italy at five medals and u.s. also has five medals including one gold. you can get the latest from the was. >> we even have drizzle over oakland this morning. that's what we have to deal with this morning. a lot like yesterday. afternoon highs today a lot like yesterday. t visibility is down if a half mile. the numbers right now anywhere from 1-2-3 degrees below where we sat just 24 hours ago. 55 in oakland. 56 in napa. 53-degrees with cloudy conditions it's a great start to the morning for the runners in san francisco. 58 san jose. 59-degrees in mountain view. we will see a turn around as we move through the morning hours. with the low clouds hanging over it could take awhile like it did yesterday morning. concord waking up with mostly clear skies. fairfield you have to get far inland to see the blue sky. pacific satellite view not a lot of change. the trough remains off the west coast. the ridge remains to our south and southeast it will continue to nudge our way. today we are looking at a very slight warming. some us may not feel it. tomorrow we feel the bigger warmup. today we've got the fog, we've got the clearing all the way back to the coast. by tomorrow we will wake up with the patchy morning fog. the marine layer will shrink as high pressure takes control over our weather pattern. we are warm today by midweek we will turn hot. afternoon highs expected for today. 84 santa rosa. 79 san rafael. upper 60s sausalito. off to the east bay 70 degrees for oakland. mid start to the bay for most us in the south bay, east bay, north bay. mostly sunny skies for the afternoon. a homeless man may have been planning a mass shooting. the chronicle reports officers had several run ins with the suspect robert johns. the first time they found a loaded shotgun and 22 caliber rifle in his car. then on july 21st a day after the aurora massacre they found weapons such as sawed off shotgun. johns is in custody on weapons charges. james holmes returns to court tomorrow. new cams will not be allowed at tomorrow's hearing. he will be formerly charged. the judge is expected to rule in a defense request that prosecutors cannot use a package sent to his psychiatrist by him that includes a man outlining a large scale attack. grudge there is more heartbreak for a man critically injured in that attack. ashley moor is in the hospital recovering from gunshot wounds to her neck and abdomen and she has suffered a miscarriage. funerals were held in several states. family and friends gathered in ohio to honor matt quinn who died while shielding his girlfriend from gunfire. private services were held in illinois and arizona. aspiring sports broadcaster jessica was remembered in texas. >> you put your dreams on hold, you stop that right now. you chase those dreams. you don't know how long you have here. >> 11 of the injured are still in the hospital. out of tragedy comes generosity. a group of high schoolers held a fundraising bike ride. the teens set a goal of $1,000 and they raised $1,050. even they they didn't know the victims they felt compelled to help. >> i feel like it's human nature to help those in need. and so from one community to the other. >> the vacaville police officers association heard about the fundraiser and donated $100. proceeds will go to the aurora relief fund that helps families, memorial services and medical bills. at least eight walmarts in missouri had to be evacuated because of bomb threats. police did not find anything suspicious. this is not the first time the discount chain has received threats to to walmart stores. today rescue crews will try to recover the bodies of two americans that went missing on a mountain climbing trip in peru. the bodies of 32-year-old ben horn and gill white were found yesterday. rescuers say the two were ascending the peak at the mountain and plunged to their deaths. horn was a student at uc san diego, wise was a business entrepreneur from colorado. the mother of wikileaks founder jillian assange will meet with authorities tomorrow. ray sang has been held up in the embassy in london. he has tried to avoid extradition to sweden where he is wanted for questioning over sexual assault. penn state's president says the school is adequately covered to handle the crush of lawsuits from the jerry sandusky child abuse scandal. they can tap into a general liability fund. the school president hopes to settle as many lawsuits as possible even though its insurance company is seeking to limit claims. last month jury found sandusky of abusing ten boys in a 15 year period. several of penn state's 12 recruits for the 2013 signing class has reiterated their commitment. they have said they will stay with the lions. player have -- players have been given the option to move. state treasure bill lockyer may be looking to become the next chancellor of the california state university system. former state attorney general has been lobbying the universities board of trustees. lockyer may have an advantage because he has strong ties to legislatures that fund the cash trapped system. cal state long beach president f. king alexander is said to be in contention for that job. university of california will be trying something new when students return to campus this fall. new online program to help prevent suicides. it will help start-up conversations with students in need. according to the university of california during the 2009-2010 school year there were 4700 attempts by uc students. 11 were successful. they are going to wellness programs like horse back riding for teens and yoga classes for city workers. in 2004 voters approved an initiative to make up for mental health cuts. california ranks sixth in the nation or 60th in the nation comes to mental health spending cuts. since 2009 they have seen a 21% loss in funding. president barack obama's health care law will extend coverage to 300,000 in the next few years. there is one big problem. medical experts believe there won't be enough doctors. right now the nation is already experiencing a shortage. association of american medical colleges statements by the year 2015 the country will be short 63,000 doctors. that number is expected to double by the year 2025. the red cross is seeking blood donations. the organization says blood supply is at the lowest level in 15 years. officials blame the shortage on the severe heat and storms that have gripped many parts of the country. that combined with the usual summer slow down in donations has caused the blood supply to drop to emergency levels. at some point surgeons may have to cancel elective operations. there is a way you can help out today blood centers of the pacific is holding a blood drive from noon to 4:00 p.m. today. it's located at the redwood shores library. 63rd annual fair is scheduled to get under way this week. this week they are trying something new. a breast feeding trailer will be set up for new moms. this comes as the board of supervisors passed a resolution recognizing this week as world breast feeding
