some awards in breakdancing in my own age group. and so, yeah, in the neighbourhood, in our barrio, i became quite well—known as a break dancer, myself and somebody else, opito, who used to be my breakdancing partner. he was white, i was black, and together we did all these numbers. you have nominated your father as a key influence in your life on your work. what was his job? what did he do? he used to drive a lorry, a massive lorry that he would transport food from all over the country, and sometimes he would go away for weeks, and sometimes months at a time. he worked very hard, and i started to have that sense of the value of working very hard.

and this movie flashdance and fame, so that was the period of time. so i started to get to these parties in our barrios, and my sister was dancing disco at the time and showed me these moves, and i got into the breakdancing scene that was in our barrio, and i started to learn those moves. and we started to get, little by little, stronger so we could compete in the barrios in the zone. compete? yeah, all the time, we were trying to go and pick a competition between barrios, and they always result in a major fight because nobody wanted to lose. we were also bad losers anyway. just mentioning that time, you mentioned the barrios, those were districts, but impoverished districts?

to a working-class mexican-american family. hancock: like many border areas, el paso/juárez is generally a pretty poor area. richard's mother worked in a boot factory, and his father worked for the santa fe railroad. we met when he was like 5 years old, and i would've been 8 years old. his dad and my mother went to school in camargo together. richard was the youngest of five kids. milam: i met ricky in the second grade. he was just a normal kid like everybody. we would all hang around and play baseball, just like normal kids would do. do certain activities like swimming, having a little party, get-together, things like that in the barrio. he was brought up catholic. his mom got him as an altar boy, but he would tell me that he was not way into being an altar boy,

and i got jumped by this kid named johnny. he had my same name. anyway, that was my life growing up, but it made me who i am today, right? ♪ manhattan was like oz, you know. it was there. it was something to achieve. it was something better. you know, it was someplace-- but it was close enough. you know what i mean? you could always dip your toe into what wealthy people and people who had privilege-- you saw it. and you could smell it and taste it and go, god, you wanted it so bad because you could mingle with it. you just couldn't, you know, get into it. ♪ now, jackson heights was not an easy place to grow up in, i gotta tell you. but it gave you character. now, those of us who lived there, we took care of one another 'cause, well, we had a sense of community. and there was that one place that became the hub for everyone in the barrio-- the bodega. that's spanish for "storeroom," by the way.
