nikki haley did edge ron desantis, and she leads him by four percentage points. but that is within the poll's margin of error. and jonathan, i think it's important to note, it's a really competitive contest for second place. but i think you're exactly right. the stakes for ron desantis, him being able to finish second instead of third place, are so important for his campaign. he has the endorsement from the states sitting governor, kim reynolds. he's traveled to all 99 of iowa's counties. he has the organization and the money. and, so a third place finish would be disastrous for him. so, i think those are the stakes going into tomorrow night for him. no doubt about it. >> you know, mark, there's a bunch of numbers in the poll that jumped out at me. one of them has to do with the fact that governor nikki haley saw the largest jump in support, but only 9% of her supporters are, quote, extremely enthusiastic compared to 23% of the scientists supporters and 49% of trump supporters. -- favorability, unfavorability, nikki haley's favor ability is that -- unfavorability as at 46. and that's an 11-point drop unfavorability.

second in south carolina. according to some of the recent polls, second here in iowa, but we just need to have a strong showing tonight. >> i know you were happy with the top line "des moines register" polling number on friday that had her just ahead of desantis by about 4 points. when you dug into it, you have an enthusiasm issue among iowa caucus goers, they are not that enthusiastic about nikki haley. 9% are extremely enthusiastic. she falls last on favorability, between desantis, trump and ramaswamy. how do you change minds? you worked in the trump administration, the ag department, so you were supportive of a lot of those policies. now you're on the haley train. how do you convince your fellow iowans to get there too? >> i have respect for all the candidates in this race. i'm not supporting nikki haley because of anybody that's in the race or not in the race. i'm supporting her because of the vision and positive message

favorability in iowa went down significantly. she said it was because of the negative ads spent against her because she was doing better. is that possible? >> they went down to a level i have not seen for a contender like this among gop caucus goers. the ratio is plus two. favorables are under 50%. there is something going on. >> dana: what are the phase/unphase for ron desantis. >> he is 60%. 58% maybe. donald trump maybe in the 6six 0s. >> bill: vivek ramaswamy. >> his numbers are better than hers. >> dana: he thinks so. >> bill: thats what happens when you go to all 99 counties twice. these were the end results for republicans in 2016. we go back eight years.

she'll thrive. >> ali, what does she say about the favorability rating, the "des moines register" poll has her in second place, but her favorability has her a lot lower than ron desantis, in a caucus, second place, second choice is what matters and if more people go to ron desantis for their second choice, she's not going to come in second. how does she ensure she has the enthusiasm there? the ground became in iowa? >> the enthusiasmetric is one we have been paying attenon to. as you know, there is seemingly an enthusiasm gap on the haley part compared to the rest of her competitor. 4 in 10 are enthusiastic about getting out to caucus for her. i know you're cold in new hampshire, but it's balmy compared to what we're experiencing in des moines, iowa and other places in iowa. people are going to need to feel that enthusiasm, if they're going to get out and vote.

it's not your turn. go sit down. >> right. hey, it was the timing, right? and it's important to listen to president obama. he walked the walk. he was in the similar situation at the time going into re-election. remember, he was at that time record low favorability. so i think what obama is trying to relay to president biden is that it's not about boasting, right? the economy is doing well we see the indicators. >> people don't feel like. >> boast something not working. what you have to do is contrast. that's what you saw out of valley forge. it's about saying hey, you might not be happy with all that i'm doing, but you will be really sad if you elect next president donald trump. and that's why you see the contrast. it's about people don't believe the positive. they believe the negative. so you better switch it and say, hey, this is what you are going to get with a trump presidency. >> steve: harold, the current president hasn't really attacked by name the former president until this past friday when he

acknowledge that the former president lost. let me show you here. it's almost a pretty even split. barely a majority believe donald trump's false assertions. 41% of iowa republican caucusgoers do not believe donald trump's claims. and you know what? it leads to some interesting splits. your favorability of donald trump depends on whether you believe him. those that believe him, 92% favorable rating, and those who don't believe him, just 30% have a favorable rating here. as you can see, desantis, scott, and ramaswamy all have more evenly divided favorable ratings among both group. in theory they might unite both groups and donald trump not so much. look at the divide between these two groups. 51-41 here. gun enthusiasts. if you're a believe category,

how about asa hutchinson, minus 18 points net favorability rating. far more republicans have a unfavorable view than a favorable view. how about mike pence? minus 17 points. will herd wasn't even on the debate stage, even he has a net negative favorability rating at minus 17 points. did you hear the pun intended with the heard and hurd there? so who's gained? who has done well or boosted their favorability? >> who are the two people who have seen the biggest gains in their net favorability ratings? tim scott is really sort of running in his own lane, running on this positive message, not attacking donald trump, but not praising him necessarily either. how about vivek ramaswamy who is basically praying at the cult of donald trump, plus 30 points. so basically, you can't go against trump. you can go down the middle, try not to mention him, or praise him. either one of those pathways work. the other thing i will note, what do republicans want? gop voters, the case trump's rivals should make at debates.
