this case we've done that do i'm proud of the work that goes into these cases. again we never get to this result without the commitment of so many people. >> reporter: you've got to know his family very well. a decision like this -- does it feel personal? >> it's definitely personal. i have gotten to know this family. again, we -- myself drew strength from the dignity and the class and the commitment that they showed to let this go out. there's a responsibility that we have to make sure we do everything that's possible. and while i'm talking about that i just wanted to thank my family. i know i speak for everybody else. people make sacrifices. ball we're committing to sees
patriot player. this was just about a murder occurring, a brutal senseless murder and this defendant should be treated like anyone else. we impaneled a jury and asked those questions. can you treat him like any other citizen? i was grateful that i didn't think that really played into the case. i'll second my appreciation to you the media for the respect and the restrained you showed us the family. i know you're here to do a job, but the process worked. it wasn't a circus-like add moss fear, and that was important. i think the jurors were profection at. they showed up they are serious about it. thank you very much.
we're very grateful and actually drew strength from their commitment to show up every day and let the process play out as it would. so i'm very grateful for the jury and also as you'll recall when we started the case we had just lost our district attorney who went on to be the mayor of this great city. and i wanted to thank again the governor and the lieutenant governor for the appointment of thomas quinn. he was absolutely the right man for the job, he was part of the team. it was important to keep the team intact. we had come so far working on the case and it really has been a team effort. i'm very grateful for all the agency that have been involved. i couldn't even name them all for you, but the chief from atte borough is here with us and the
lightly. we intended to see the case through, so when we charged him, we believed in the case. obviously there was -- the evidence, people can -- you've heard the evidence the jury obviously agreed with that, so i'm satisfied with that. >> reporter:ed no weapon and you said he pulled the trigger. talk to me where your confidence and statement comes from? >> i appreciate the question. it's a very good question but we're respectful of where we are in the case. we've had one defendant who's been tried, two to go. it was a joint venture that we argued to the jury and i'm not going to say too much more because these other cases have to play out, and we will obviously -- >> just two more questions. >> reporter: what went through your head when you heard guilty?
this is case of that. there was an opportunity to attempt to engage this person extend your perimeter. those types of things. more or less as you would do in a hostage negotiation, if if you can. sometimes these things turn on a dime. and police work is really in dealing with those issues that can turn violent and often times fatal at the drop of a dime. you have to make a call at that time and use the appropriate training being goided by the rues and regulations of the department and state law that applies. >> it's down to a judgment call. we are seeing the pulse.msnbc.com pulse of uh how peep feel whether or not the police car striking the suspect was an appropriate use of force. it is interesting to see most people think it was not an appropriate action to do that there was probably another option. >> thomas? >> go for it.
>> well first of all, the city the nation the whole world has gotten behind my brother in this case, because they've seen the footage and they've seen the tape eric was never combative, as you see, the gentleman turns my brother over when the first interview came out, they said my brother fought inside the truck and also fought on the scene. he never does. so they said that's why they had to use even a taser we'll prove that the taser was on his chest and that he never really intended to use a taser from what i see. we'll find all this out in court. >> as this moves forward and as you're representing the family what are the facts that you hope come to light?
