inflation is the top concern. people tie inflation to joe biden. writing it off as a global problem is a hazard for democrats. >> it's hard. it is a global problem. those things are true. a lot of this is because of russia's invasion of ukraine. politically it sounds like a dodge. the biden administration and democrats in congress especially before the mid-terms were saying look, we have plans to get this in check. we have passed laws including one that will reduce your prescription drug prices. we tried to bring oil prices down, gas prices down. they're starting to come down again. they say republicans will take away your social security and medicare. the economy is tough. jobs are up. this inflation issue is a complicated one. democrats are trying to go at some of the root causes. there's no quick fixes here. politically that's hard, right? >> it is hard. people have recent memory. prepandemic, we were booming. we had to shut down the economy.
theorist. more than a bit, an election denier. but one of the things that republicans used against democrats in the past election, two, things won the inflation issue, and culture wars. you know one of them very well, obviously inflation is something that you deal, with your small business owner. nobody ever gets a bill for repairing their car that they think is the right amount or twice or three times as much as they want. you didn't run get run into culture wars. tell us how you skirted these issues. >> just talking about what matters to people. i think we're all really tired of the political agenda being set by twitter. we want good schools, we want to have the cops show up when we call them. i've had my building broken into four times this year, and that gets expensive. we cannot afford to keep going down this road of polarization. our kids need in america that has a level playing field for small businesses, for public schools, for homeownership.

>> first about inflation issue. that really hurts us. we've got to admit it. we have not got a handle on it and put that up front. we're working on this, this, and that. after that we've got to talk about saving democracy. that's what we've done here is tried to save democracy by getting people to recognize the validity of election after election after election. >> did you see that resonate with independent voters or really just mostly with your base? >> a lot of independent voters really want to see that. independents used to be democrats or republicans, mod raets. that really meant something to them. i think joe biden's agenda -- i ran on joe biden's agenda. basically that map we did together of infrastructure, the bipartisan infrastructure bill, with all the various broadband, all the roads, everything, that's starting to resonate with folks. build back better didn't work but we had a chips and science bill. that did. the inflation act, that worked. so, a lot of good things actually will come to fruition. >> so, congressman, we're
there was no sense of biden triangulating at all here and that's one reason when, you know, we talk about the inflation issue, if biden keeps spending money the way he's been doing the last couple of years, i'm not so sure that inflation is going to go away. neil: all right. you might be right about that. i know we're showing a lot of negative numbers, but on the week, the major averages, smartly as the week before. the dow up 4%, and s&p 500 more than 6% and nasdaq 8%. and as you know, danielle, it was built on the surprising inflation report thinking it's as bad, but not as bad and they're clinging to that in the hope that maybe the federal reserve will cool it on both the number and the size of the rate hikes. did they get ahead of their skis? what do you think? >> yeah, i'm calling what happened this last week the recession celebration. so we've seen the layoff numbers pick up earnestly. we've seen layoff announcements
i believe he hurt dr. oz in pennsylvania. i just -- it's time for new leadership. and to talk about, again, the things that americans really care about. and i do believe that florida is an example of what we are going to see. and it's going to continue to break republican as long as we still have a president that -- i'm sorry -- still has not been able to handle the inflation issue, has not been able to handle the gas prices continuing to go up. energy independence is a big issue for the united states. >> as a democrat here, i wonder what you make of all of that. and then also, if you flip to it the democrats, fetterman coming in ahead of where biden was in 2020, i think the question on that side is that because of the candidate he was and who he is, or is that indicative more broadly for the party?
control. >> reporter: and i asked a lot of those democratic voters where does the economy fall on your list and what i heard from a lot of them specifically older voters, is that they have lived through a lot of different administrations and a lot of different economic economic situations and that this inflation issue is a global issue and they're not sure if democrat or republican would do a better job on that. it's just something they have to let play out. >> thank you in texas there for us. mark, back to you. in other words, i think there's a sense that some of the gop are feeling really good about the house but they want a victory to be seen as a victory and not a little victory. >> i think a really strong democratic, we know the democrats actually overperform because the republicans really only net about ten or 15 house
after that things that worry families like education. >> ainsley: inflation is at 40 year high. and that's why 80%, look at that of the voters, look at this, abc-"the washington post" poll is calling the economy the top issue. right behind that is the inflation issue. because we go to the grocery store. we see that everything is expensive. you always talk about the ketchup it's $8 a bottle. >> steve: i was at the grocery store yesterday mayonnaise close to $9 a jar. >> brian: as americans we have to give up on condi meant. are you saving the packets like my mom dawstles the ketchup you open the door and it all falls out. where the butter is supposed to be. >> steve: speaking of butter, brian, that high school marching band is from butler, new jersey.
