says it's been in direct contact with coup leaders in niger urging them to step e aside. they ignored a deadline to give up power. cnn is in neighboring nairobi, kenya. larry, what's the situation in niger tonight. >> reporter: it's on edge. i want to show you some incredible video from a stadium on sunday. thousands of military said they supported this military junta against the international community that condemned it. it ignored a dead like to resit the president or they said they will use force.
time is important for the coup in niger. today is the deadline they were given to relinquish power and reinstate the ousted president. >> a bloc of west african nations set the deadline. they could take military action if not met. the coup leaders seem to be holding ground right now. larry, if the these coup leaders, they don't add hehere the deadline, what could happen next? >> reporter: then this group of west ach kin countries co militarily intervene. they are almost daring them. they gave this coup leaders one week to reinstate the government of president mohamed bazoum or
continent. but people who do not want western meddling, opposed especially to france, the former colonial power of niger, have been inching closer towards the military. so in way the military and these men seem to say that, listen, even though the international community condemned us, the people support us. >> larry, appreciate it. thank you very much for your reporting. a source tells cnn the pentagon is considering putting trups on commercial ships traveling through waterways in the middle east. the idea is just one of many options in response to a recent uptick in iranian aggression. >> that could bring u.s. and iranian forces even closer to direct confrontation. cnn's oren leib are man reports. >> reporter: the u.s. is considering putting teams of u.s. troops on commercial vessels in the middle east to prevent and stop iranian attempts from seizing those vessels. something we've seen several times over the course of the
♪ this just in. we're now learning that the first flight evacuating french citizens from niger is, quote, airborne. france and italy early this morning announced plans to get their nationals out of the african nations days after the country's president is overthrown by members of his own presidential guard. larry, what precipitated the actual evacuate? felt like it had been heading in this direction. why now? >> reporter: it had been heading in this direction, phil, especially after sunday's protest turned violent and the french forces had to use tear gas to disperse the citizens trying to break into the embassy. they were smashing windows, throwing things into the embassy. they say because of the closure
week. cnn's larry is monitoring this crisis for us. what is the latest on all of this? >> the biggest development is that the battle lines are drawn between the military men that took over the government. and the regional body that is now isolating them. they have issued travel bans. freezing asset ins regional banks. they are trying to squeeze them so much, they have to negotiate. and the african union supporting those sanctions by the economic community of west african state saying they hope that the two objectives here, the best way to reinstate the president is negotiations. if that does not happen, all necessary measures should be taken. which is fighting words from the afterly can union.
protesters damaged the building, chanted against colonialism. and waved russian flags. in neighboring nigeria, regional economic leaders hits niger with a host of sanctions and threatened to use force if the coup leaders don't restore the elected president within a week. cnn's larry is monitoring this crisis for us. what is the latest on all of this? where. >> the african union worrying. niger has been a key standpoint for the strategy in the sahara for the african union. the economic community of west african states. for the u.s. and france and everybody that wants mali and chad and everybody in that
