With it. how many racial murders, how many mass murders do we have to see before we start dealing with this stuff? and you know, going to just memorials is not enough. we need to deal with policy and law. i remember when you were there with the vice president, and we were talking to you, we were covering you and i think the funerals hadn t finished yet, before uvalde happened. to your point. exactly right. with this world of hate and weapons of war and the epidemic we re living in and so we sort of veer, as a country, from one tragic calamity to another. i mean i ve been actually in the pulpit, getting calls on other cases before i could speak at the funeral of this one or being in a march about it. and i think people people blame us, saying well, there s sharpton again. like i want to do this. i mean you know how many nights i see these people in caskets again, because of trying to comfort the famils? nobody wants to do this.
Getting up in the pulpit before his sermon and saying, we re now at war with germany. and i thought, how exciting, gosh, an adventure. and little did i know what was in store for me, but. so that s how my war started, in a church at lancaster castle. at october 1942. we got embarkation leave, and we all went home for a week, a week s leave. and then we sailed for north africa. ..early november. our division was put in, told to capture the range of hills to the north of tunisia. and, ..we captured hill after hill. but it took time. it took a month of solid fighting. you were attacking probably twice a week. ..another hill. and we were never out of the line at all.
Truth from the pulpit because they think they may lose their congregation. so that point actually reverses in some interesting way what rev just said, right? so we can concede we have feckless leaders. we have spineless ministers in pulpits in some places, who aren t, in some ways, engaging in that kind of moral leadership that we need. but they re also feeling pinched and pressured by everyday ordinary folk who seem to hold these views. on the one hand, we re saying that people aren t being moved by moral leadership, and on the other hand, we re saying moral leadership is absent because they re afraid of people. so the question we have to ask ourselves, and i think donny s point really gets us to this, is what does donald trump stand for? for all of these folk, why is this man, who is so clearly flawed and that s a generous description
Talk about god. what do you think, joe? look, i think that something s probably gone wrong in our politics today when we recognize that politicians beat a path to the pulpit every campaign season whether they re republican, democrat, black, white, anywhere in between, ask then when those politicians get elected somehow the thought that they would speak about their faith and their experience in faith would be frowned upon. so look, i think for me the most telling thing in that speech or the most impactful one is when he talked about what prayer has done, the fact that he is the mayor of new york city, a black man. that s the power of many unanswered prayers. that we have the highest legal officer in the land as far as the attorney general, prayer is being answered. you list all of these things that most of the leadership from the senate majority leader in the state to the leader in the assembly, all minorities, many unanswered prayers. again, to your point, talking about that village, at some
Administration to undo all of that progress. and, by the way, we were reliably told for a year and a half that there was no border drivers at all. so, amazing to see now that all of a sudden we have got a problem, i think you said something interesting there, juan, to show that he is doing something at the border. i think that s more about what the politics of this are now we have a political problem. that s how they have dealt with this entire border issue rather than actually trying to just secure the border. bret: he hasn t really visited there that much. he hasn t made it an issue that he is talking about on the pulpit, th, you know, the presit can have a mega phone. everything i mean, this is someone who for years has worked to destabilize the situation there. i agree with you, juan, it s a bipartisan problem that congress needs to act. they didn t do as much as they should have during the previous administration. at heart, this is about on day one, removing some of those protections that were in place. now freaking out because we have
