inspections for fatigue damage after this frightening episode on the southwest airlines flight last friday night. at 35,000 feet t fuselage of the phoenix to sacramento southwest flight ripped open leaving a gaping hole five feet long. passengers described a loud noise. >> all of a sudden there's a big sunroof in the middle of the plane, a big old hole. >> assault the oxygen masks dropped. everyone was trying to get the mask on. >> i'm holding the hand of the guy next to me trying not to bawl my eyes out. >> reporter: after an emergency landing at a military base in arizona, the damaged section was removed along with the flight recorders for analysis of safety board experts. investigatorses believe the problem began with a crack in the lap joint in a part of the fuselage where only visual inspections are required. >> this is a relatively young airplane.
the plane lost pressure but made a successful landing. southwest has been scrambling to inspect dozens of aging boeing 737s, 300 in its fleet. investigators have found cracks in three planes so far. joining us now is the former managing director of the national transportation board. how worried should we be and a lot of people are worried out there. >> boeing and ntsb are on this and in the air that it ripped off. >> who made a blunder that allowed a plane so vulnerable to -- that could have been horrendous disaster, who screwed up? there must have been a failure.

>> at one point it was so frustrating that the mom may have yelled and may even slapped the baby. >> reporter: a southwest flight attendant immediately grabbed the baby away from its parents. >> i think it was a solid move on the part of the flight attendant to take custody of the child. in light of the situation, it calmed everybody down. >> reporter: the flight attendant did return the child to its parents before the plane landed. police took the child into their custody at the gate to perform the welfare check and determine if there were any signs of abuse. after questioning, the flight attendant and witnesses, the child was returned to the parents and were not cited. travellers we spoke to were split on what the flight attendant did. >> i guess it was the right thing to do because if they lost their cool that time it could have happened before. >> i would just maybe, can we help you or something like that, to be more courteous and
