need. >> it's a gamble on both sides. democrats are gambling if this is going to get fixed and everyone expect at some point down the line there will be a certain baseline of functionality and maybe reached for a variety majority of users and clearly not for everyone. the republican party has shifted its approach as well. we've heard them of course dramatically change their message over the past few weeks, focusing on oversight. if there's a feeling after this deadline, if the same sorts of major significant glitches, not small hurdles but significant krach crashes or outages happen, we may see democrats who peel off what you saw with the upton bill and the administration oversight hearings or that's what they've been telling their reporters. >> can they afford to anything else on the agenda? >> we've seen the white house try again and again to pivot to the economy, for example, they haven't been able to do that successfully because people are still asking this key question,
you think there's a desire for it? absolutely. how about minnesota? how is it working there? joining me now is congressman keith ellison of minnesota. congressman, good to have you with us tonight. on the upton bill, you, of course, voted no. you did not side with the republicans. there were 39 of your colleagues who decided to do it, for various reasons. does this weaken the position of the democrats, because it strengthens the talking points for the republicans? john boehner is going to be able to run around for a year now saying the democrats don't even believe in their own bill and what they're doing and we now have a bipartisan bill that passed, and harry reid won't touch it. what does this do to the democrats? >> nothing. we need to stand up and we should. what we should do is talk about the importance of going from a situation where we had 50 million people without any health care. we had people with lifetime limits, people being thrown off after they got sick. and we changed. and we moved on from that. that's what we need to do. we need to talk about the bad
to speak out about voter suppression. in fact, you have been the leader when it comes to folks out of ohio talking about suppressing the vote and what has to be done. is this a direct reaction to you running? what do you think? >> well, ed, i think this is more reaction to the demographic shifts we have going on in our country, including the state of ohio, that, again, if republicans don't have better candidates or better ideas, they try to rig the election. the first rigging was through redistricting, as you know, ed. and you have been a great champion, and i'm so glad you are sounding the alarm bell. we need to do that. and states like north carolina and texas, they made -- the republicans are wholesale stripping away the right to vote, or creating barriers to the right to vote by having one huge bill. but in states like ohio, they are chipping away brick by brick by brick. and they are building a wall, a barrier between voters and the opportunity to be equals at the ballot box. ed, this is exactly what is going on in the state of ohio and across this country. >> senator, how can we interpret it any other way than it's an
>> well, you're getting us started, ed. to the extent that you continue to sound the alarm and others on the ground, we do have good government groups going all over this state. i think it will backfire, the same way it back fired on them last year when they tried to thwart access to the ballot box. it will backfire again. but we don't have the glitz and glamour of a presidential election and that is why what you are doing is so important. every election matters. >> it's the worst you've ever seen. >> absolutely. it goes back. remember the long lines in ohio in 2004? and juxtapose those long lines to what happened in florida in 2012. that is exactly what they're doing, trying to discourage people from exercising their fundamental rights to vote. >> and i want to make sure i've got this right. this would diminish the power of the secretary of state. >> yes, the absentee ballot applications being mailed out that, particular bill states that only if the general assembly authorizes it through an appropriation. so if the general assembly does not give money to the secretary of state to mail out those absentee ballot applications,

president has been harm in the way nothing else hurt him before and that does carry over into midterm elections. confidence in the president is an important factor in those elections and it is down now. i don't know that he can restore it. i wouldn't rule it out but it seems to me that is what needs to happen for them to start feeling better about obamacare and him, because it's, a serious problem for him. martha: major factor whether or not he is standing out there alone or with a few folks on his side on this, and whether or not people will want him to campaign in some difficult districts as well based on this issue. >> martha, thank you very much. martha: good to see you. bill: what happens to all those that lost their insurance? can they just call the company and say redo it? well, not exactly. a couple weeks ago we introduced you to one of the five million who lost their insurance, betsy tanner. i wake up at night sometimes just thinking about it. i'm losing sleep over it. and yeah, hours. i don't work on mondays. and i have spent several hours
received. bill: what did you then think of the so-called, fix of last week? >> not really a fix. it is just, you know, delaying the disaster for a year, for a few and really just creating an administrative nightmare for insurance companies. bill: what happens for those companies now? you've got some experience in that. >> what happens with the insurance companies? bill: yeah. >> well, i'm not sure. i would assume they're going to be raising our rates because of all of the extra work they're going to be having to do, cutting benefits possibly. that ask what we've seen in my profession. bill: that is like an administrative nightmare then? >> absolutely. absolutely. >> and when you heard the president's words of last week, what did you think? >> well, just because the president says it is so doesn't make it so and i think we've learned that lesson the hard way. you know, i, am just sort of sitting back to see how all of
insulating themselves against sound bites as congressman clyburn just suggested? >> i think there is some of that. and also remember, their support for the upton bill is not at all tantamount to supporting repeal of obama care. and, in fact, people sponsoring somewhat -- somewhat similar legislation in the senate, watered down a bit, are some of the more vulnerable democrats up for re-election. so i think a lot of that is about positioning. none of that goes at the heart of the legislation. and you know, no matter how unpopular it becomes as a result of this, it seems highly unlikely we're looking at the repeal of obama care. are republicans really going to want to go out there and say, yes, we think you should once again be denied coverage for preexisting conditions. we once again think your -- >> your children who are under the age of 26. >> exactly. so that's why we're not really looking at that. but i think there are a lot of nervous democrats, we can certainly say that right now. on the other, hand, we have more
can see the number of tornadoes are marked in red. 68 according to the national weather service and a lot of those down here through paducah, kentucky, central illinois and indiana, finally near columbus, ohio, central part of buckeye state. mike tobin in central illinois back with us now where the sun is up. what do you see, mike? >> reporter: you see this remarkable field of destruction behind me, bill, and it stretches about a good quarter mile. this is the devonshire and trails end neighborhood and back there is nothing but debris. houses striped right down to their foundations. what is left behind is a pile of lumber, insulation, housing material. so many different homes like that. people are going through the neighborhoods now, sifting through, trying to find their belongings. what we had here yesterday was a cloud of debris. one of the storm chasers that was caught in the middle talks about getting caught in the funnel cloud itself, getting moved around and he didn't see a
democrats are united behind the president's law. >> i don't think you can tell what will happen next year, but i will tell you this. democrats stand tall in support of the affordable care act. this is an issue that has to be dealt with. but it doesn't mean, oh, it's a political issue, so we're going to run away from it. no. it's too valuable for the american people. what is important about it is that the american people are well served. not who gets reelected. >> yes, lawrence. democrats stand tall except for when they're running for the bushes telling the president, save us or else we're going to kill this law. >> enough democrats stand tall. >> enough democrats stand tall. not enough to stop the president from having to -- you know, it's very interesting. after the president went ahead and did his fix, you still had, what, 39 democrats vote for the upton bill. which is a death nail for the affordable care act. >> they voted for something that they knew would not become law. okay? they were voting for their re-election campaigns.
