comcast business, powering possibilities. hello. and welcome to our viewers joining us here in the united states and all around the world. i'm rosemary church, live from atlanta, with our continuing coverage of the israeli/hamas war. we begin in gaza, as the war between israel and hamas is about to enter its second month. the israeli military says it is carrying out a significant strike right now on the territory. [ explosions ] >> an idf spokesperson says the strike was, quotes, very extensive and targeted hamas in in infrastructure above and below ground. its soldiers have reached the gaza coast, in an effort to cut off the northern part of the enclave. this comes as israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has once again rejected calls for a cease-fire, saying all hostages must first be released. meantime, an intense diplomatic push is under way to prevent a wider conflict in the region. antony blink en landon in turke sunday night. and the corrector of the cia is traveling to several countries in the middle east, to meet with counterparts and country leaders. the latest communication outage in gaza cut off contact between several humanitarian aid groups and their teams on sunday. the world health organization said it was very concerned about the blackout, along with a continued air strike from israel. the u.n.'s main relief agency in gaza, as well as the palestinian red crescent, said they lost contact with teams inside the enclave. it is the third communications outage since the conflict began last month. for more, we want to go to elliott gotkine. these aid organizations are worried for their workers after losing contact with them due to the massive israeli bombardments. what are you learning about that? a and of course, the strikes under way on gaza. >> as far as the strikes are concerned, this was the heaviest night of bombardment, since israel started to strike the enclave, in the wake of the terrorist attacks from hamas on october 7th. the idf saying in the last hour or so, that it hit over the last 24 hours, 450 targets. it also took control of a hamas military compound, that included observation posts, anti-tank missile posts and tunnels, as well as killing several of the militants themselves. as you were saying, what israel has succeeded in doing, bisecting the gaza strip in two. saying there is a northern and southern gaza. and it's surrounded gaza city, one of the focal points of its operations inside the gaza strip. it sees that as a strong hold, and expected them to come into the city. as far as the rest of what's going on in gaza. a communication blackout, the third one since october 7th. causing concern among families. you can't communicate to let them know they are safe or alive. with friends and family outside of the strip, as far as humanitarian communications are concerned, this is hampering further efforts to provide aid and assistance to the people of the gaza strip. we had the head of the world health organization saying without connectivity, people that need immediate medical attention, cannot contact hospitals. all communication must be restored immediately. i reached out to the idf. they didn't have anything to add. we are hoping to get information on that. in the previous communication blackouts, service has been resc rescored seemingly without need for repairs, that it is a deliberate communication blackout on the part of the idf. we don't have a comment from that. >> our thanks to elliott gotkine. appreciate it. all this comes as dozens of people were killed in a blast at the refugee camp in gaza. according to an official at a nearby hospital. he says it was the result of an israeli air strike. the idf says it is looking into the circumstances around the explosion. nada bashyr is following this story. her report includes graphic images. >> reporter: at this hospital in central gaza, another day of seemingly unending horror. bodies, some tiny, arriving in the dozens. the dudsens. no one is spared the devastation of this war. this journalist, seen here at the gaza hospital, not to report on the attack, but to identify the children amongst the dead. >> translator: i saw my son. my daughter and my sons. i saw my three siblings killed. friends at my house, all killed. >> reporter: hospital officials tell cnn this latest disaster was caused by another israeli air strike. among the bodies countless women and children. >> translator: 52 injured, and 70 injured. most of those killed are women, elderly and children. a large number in the rubble. >> reporter: in the refugee camp, once home to tens of thousands of palestinians, residents search desperately for any sign of survivors. many digging frantically with their bare hands. this residential community is located in one of the zones deemed safe to evacuate to by the israel military. but israel's air strikes have proven unrerelating. >> translator: all of a sudden, i saw the house upside-down. i can't see. i don't know where i am. >> reporter: homes, which are crowded on saturday, with entire families, have now been reduced to blackened rubble. this crater, a reminder of the force with which india continues to bombard the gaza strip. >> translator: i saw my sisters screamling. then, my father. i looked to see who was still alive. i turned on the torch. my siblings were alive. i do not find my father. i found him next to me. i moved him. moved his hands. i moved his face. he did not respond. >> reporter: gaza's hospitals are overwhelmed. the shortages mean it's virtually impossible to treat those that are wounded. but hospitals are struggling to keep up with the mounting death toll. the bodies of those killed lay outside, awaiting identification. a gut-wrenching image, now, too familiar here in gaza. fejoining me now, for the united nations office of the coordination humanitarian affairs in the palestinianer the tear. he comes to us from jerusalem. thank you for joining us. the world is watching these horrifying and heartbreaking images. and of course, this, coming as the humanitarian situation in gaza continues to deteriorate. how would you describe conditions facing most palestinians right now? >> simply horrific and terrible. i think we've seen over and over images, from reporters on the ground. the death toll has reached more than 1,000, almost 10,000 people. 4,000 of those are children. i really think that they have to beg the question of where is the limit to become inhumanity or dishumanity. >> it must be difficult for your -- the people that work for your organization, on the ground. seeing this and understanding all of the difficulties that people are facing there. i wander if you could take us through what humanitarian assistance is getting into gaza right now. and talk to us about what's needed in addition to that. >> we worked a lot, relentlessly, to skil up the assistance that's required. it's the forefront of the response and being heroes. 77 as of yesterday, have been killed already, during the bombardment, during services or while they were at home. the big effort is to provide water, food and medicines. and of course, at a basis relief items that are essential for surviving when you leave your home, leaving everything behind. heat, water, mattresses, blankets. it's really a gigantic operation. we have 1.5 million displaced people. taking care of 700,000 of those. that means there's another 700,000 that we have to counter as a system, and we're trying to do our work, utmost effort to respond to those needs. >> explain to us that process of how you get trucks in, how far they go in and what is entailed in the arrival. and the whole process of distribution, ensuring that the supplies get to those most in need. i'm sure, that's pretty much everyone. >> absolutely correct. today we're asking for $1.2 billion for three months of operations, to cover the needs. the process, as of now, and a joint effort with the egyptian red crescent on the egyptian side, coordinating with u.n. agencies and member states and others bringing supplies into gaza. then, they are helping within gaza for distribution. fuel is an essential commodity. it's essential for us. we understand that there are security concerns related to that. we have also demonstrated we can deliver and use the fuel safely, without being diverted to armed groups. that's the real concern. this is essential for us to maintain operations, but also bakery, desalination plant. hospitals. there are 43 in ink baiters. if we do not supply electricity, those children will die. it's a gigantic effort we are doing. we're committed to support all civilians where they are. >> on sunday, the idf did tell cnn there were moments where humanitarian aid was able to go in. a cause, in essence. it gets down to what you define as a pause. have you been able to discern a type of pause that allowed humanitarian aid to go in over the course of sunday or saturday? >> it's true there's been ability to bring in assistance. that has been also the day before. i've never seen a pause. always been nearby bombardment. yesterday and the day before, the israelis allow for a corridor to move from the north to the south. unless the corridor is for both parties, the risk for civilians are still there. we saw in and around the area, that was the corridor that has reached civilians. we say that, they have known the polls of the bomb boardment, the action has continued. every day. we hope and we wish for the cease-fire. that will be important for us to scale um and reorganization better, our assistance system. you know, it's not our decision and we're still going to deliver if bombardment goes on. >> that makes it brave work for your organization and getting the humanitarian aid into gaza. many thanks. appreciate it. >> thank you. donald trump spent his weekend on the campaign trial in florida. in a matter of hours, the former president will be in a new york courtroom testifying in a civil fraud trial, that could end up costing him many of his businesses. we'll take a look at that just ahead. plus, despite a mountain of legal troubles, including criminal charges and civil lawsuits, new polling has donald trump leading joe biden in some key swing states ahead of next year's presidential elecection. we'll lookok at ththat on the e siside of the e break. ststay with usus. welcome back, everyone. in a matter of hours, former u.s. president donald trump is expected to take the stand in his civil fraud trial in new york. it will be a high-stakes day of testimony that could determine the fate of his new york business endeavors. trump could be forced to sell off properties after a judge ruled that he and his company committed fraud for years while building his real estate empire. joining me now from los angeles, is jessica levinson, a professor of loyola law school and host of the podcast passing judgment. >> good to be back. >> former president trump expected to take the stand. what can we expect to come out of this historic moment during his new york civil fraud trial? >> well, legally, what we're really looking at is whether or not he can say not it. i was not the one to prepare the financial statements. i was not the one to direct anybody else to inflate property values. the judge in this case has found there was fraud. it was committed by trump and the trump organization. the factor for his testimony, the other six counts for liability on the table, and the recommedy and how closely the je will draw a line between the actions that trump took and the statements that he found to be fraudulent. what we're also looking at is how to see how he answers the questions whether or not he bec becomes agitated. and key is whether he makes admissions that hurt him. we've seen him do that in other cases, like the e. jean carroll case. >> and donald trump's sons, don jr. and eric. his daughter, ivanka, is expected to be called on wednesday. how critical will the testimony of the former president's children likely be in tend? >> it's all important. ivanka trump is not a defendant in this case because a judge ruled the claims against her were too old and barred by statute of limitations. when it comes to his adult sons, don jr. said, i relied on lawyers and accountants. we'll see if the judge thinks that credible. there's no jury here. it's a bench trial. and we'll see if eric says the same thing. essentially, i wasn't the one involved in listing these valuations. i deferred to other people. >> how significant is the civil fraud trial compared to trump's other legal woes? how do you think this and the other cases will play out for him? >> he obviously thinks this case is significant. he's attended seven days of trial. this goes to a big part of his persona, a successful businessman. if a judge finds the emperor has no clothes, he's inflated the values to $3.6 billion, that engaged in fraud, that he cannot do business in new york germ. that could cut against the trump brand. the other cases are criminal cases. we're talking about potentially being incarcerated. just by chew virtue, that the cases are all criminal cases and potentially carry with them the possibility of incarceration, those are more serious. >> how likely do you think in the end it is that a former president of the united states would end up going to prison? >> i have to be honest. it's hard for me to imagine both options. given the charges against him and given the evidence that we know that's in the public record, it's hard to imagine that any person would not face some repercussion, criminal repercussions. on the same token, it's hard to imagine the former president of the united states, sitting in a federal prison. both are difficult. i know that's a nonanswer. that's why this is so unprecedented. >> of course, we'll find out. jessica levinson, thank you for joining us. appreciate your analysis. >> thank you. with a year to go before the election, trump seems to hold an edge over president biden in key swing states. new polling has him leading in some states where biden won the vote in 2020. white house reporter priscilla a alvarez has more. >> reporter: a newly released poll is inting a grim outlook for the biden campaign a year before the election. in a "new york times" and college poll, the president is trailing former president donald trump in a hypothetical match in four key swing states, nevada, georgia, arizona and michigan. president biden won those in 2020 and striking because former president donald trump faces a series of criminal charges. the biden campaign is downplaying this poll. saying in a statement, quote, president biden's campaign is hard at work reaching and mobilizing our diverse winning coalition of voters, one year out. the campaign goes on to say, we'll win in 2024 by putting our heads down and doing the work, not by fretting about a poll. the campaign cited the 2022 midterm elections where democrats had a grim outlook there and did better than was expected. there's still a long road ahead. and the president fanning out across the country to sell his economic message to voters who are dissatisfied with the economy and have doubts about the president's age and his ability to steer the country. the president, too, is facing risks within his own party about the handling of the israel/hamas war. several headwinds ahead on the domestic and international front, as the president goes into next year going into november of 2024. priscilla alvarez, cnn, traveling with the president. the u.s. secretary of state is on a whirlwind diplomatic tour through the middle east. we'll have details on his surprise visit to iraq and what he is hoping to achieve on his current stop in turkey. plus, india's residents, tourists and world cup athletes are struggling to cope with the country's toxic air. and officials warn it could last for weeks. back with that and more in a moment. c'mon, we're right there. c'mon baby. it's the only we need. go, go, go, go! ah! touchdown baby! -touchdown! are your neighbors watching the same game? >> good morning, rosemary. blinken is hoping to consult with his turkish counterpart how to respond to the humanitarian catastrophe we're seeing in gaza, as well as how to stop the conflict from spreading. these have been brutalized throughout the trip in the middle east. we saw him start in tel aviv on friday with discussions with israeli officials, including neta netanyahu. he pushed him on the need to protect civilians, to allow assistance to come in and institute the so-called humanitarian pauses. netanyahu, just hours after that meeting, came out publicly and rejected the idea of a pause or cease-fire, in this conflict. as you mentioned, on saturday, he met with his counterparts here in the arab world to talk about how to get assistance into gaza. this has been a key focus of leaders in the region. they have strongly condemned the israeli offensive and the humanitarian toll it is causing. they have called for an immediate cease-fire. yesterdays, we saw blinken go to ramallah to meet with the head of the palestinian authority. how to stop it from spreading and how to respond to the situation on the ground in gaza. today, that is expected to be a key theme with his meetings with the turkish prime minister. he will be pushing for the commitments to advance his cause and stop this from spreading to the wider region. this is something the u.s. is concerned about. it's something that blinken spoke to last night. take a listen. >> we're working very hard to make sure that the conflict in gaza does not escalate, does not spread to other places. whether it's here, whether it's elsewhere in the region. this is the very vital and urgent work of american diplomacy. that's what we're engaged in, as well, throughout this trip. blinken will be discussing this with the turkish prime minister. it is unclear if blinken will press them to remove leaders from being allowed to stay here. he has said there cannot be a return to the status quo with hamas after the october 7th attacks on israel. a lot at stake for this morning's visit. >> jennifer hansler, many thanks for that live report. we've just received word from the government of thailand it has seen proof that thai hostages, taken by hamas, are arrive. the country's prime minister says there's photographic evidence. he did not specify if he had seen one or multiple images or how many hostages were shown. thailand says 24 citizens were taken as hostages last month. coming up, millions of people in india are on high alert, as air pollution reaches hazardous levels. we'll look how it's affecting new delhi, just ahead. c'mon, we're right there. c'mon baby. it's the only we need. go, go, go, go! ah! touchdown baby! -touchdown! are your neighbors watching the same game? >> absolutely not. >> now, cnn senior political analyst and editor for "the atlantic," edward brownstein. >> hi, rosemary. >> good to see you. pressure is building on president biden, with massive pro-palestinian protests. accusing the administration for having blood on its hands for failing to call for a cease-fire. how risky is president biden's continuing support for israel and its war? as the humanitarian crisis in gaza worsened by the day? >> this is an issue that does divide democrats. we saw in a national pole by quinnipiac university, only about 50% of democrats supported military aid to israel. different than the three-quarters of democrats who support aid to ukraine. this is dividing the democratic coalition. the democratic coalition does not have a lot of trust in netanyahu, identified closely with the republican party in the u.s., for a matter of decades. and i think the president has competing interests in his coalition. what he has to hope for, is however long the fighting goes on, it will be over long before the 2024 election. and he will put enormous pressure on israel at that point to begin something that looks like a renewed negotiation for a two-state solution. that's probably his only path towards even reducing the tensions inside his own coalition. >> let's talk about that. at what point does president biden's support for israel policy and the pressure he needs to apply on prime minister netanyahu to show restraint and find that political shugs. the two-state solution to this complex issue. the longer it drags on, the more damaging it is for president biden and for israel, too. the world is turning against israel. >> i think israel expected that when this began. i think they are fully expecting to go beyond the tolerance of world public opinion, if that's what it takes to fulfill the military mission of degrading and weakening hamas. i think president biden is giving israel more leeway than, say, president obama might. not as much as president trump would. that's a conundrum for all of the forces inside the democratic coalition saying they would never support biden in '24, as a result of what he is doing. if the choice is with trump, it will be biden or trump that would probably give netanyahu more leeway than biden has done. and trump has declared that he will impose a broad range of severe and overtly discriminatory immigration policies, including a muslim ban. steven milner the white house, has been posting pictures of pro-palestinian demonstrations and declaring that i.c.e. will be busy in 2025, implying broad scale deportation. the groups think that biden is not listening to their concerns. that will be the choice they face, if they take actions in the summer and fall of 2024, that makes that world more likely. >> that is the reality, isn't it? we're one year away from americans casting their vote. and the new polls show donald trump leading joe biden in four key battleground states, nevada, georgia, arizona, michigan. the polls show that voters favor trump when it comes to the economy, immigration, national security and decisions about israel's war. this is despite trump facing legal issues. what is going on here? how should and could the white house respond to this troubling news, do you think? >> look, we have seen for quite a while now, president biden's approval ratings are in the low 40s. this is what you get when you have widespread dissatisfaction with performance of the president. democrats can point out correctly, that horse race polling, the correct biden/trump horse racing, a year out is not predictive. a story from an nbc/"wall street journal" in the fall of 2011, that president obama was no longer the favorite for re-election. there's a lot of history to that. there's other findings that are more sticky, more durable, more troubling for president biden. they confirm what we have been seeing for months now, somewhere above two-thirds of americans believe he is too old to carry out the duties of the presidency for another term. another thing the polls said that we have been seeing for months, americans, by and large, feel they were better off during the trump years, than during the biden years. and biden's agenda has not improved economic conditions where trump's did. many of the same conditions were present in 2022, and democrats were able to focus. voters attention, especially on the specific choice between democrats and republicans on abortion and rights and democracy. they were able to outperform expectations. there's no question that voters believe -- most voters believe president biden has not delivered for their interests. the key question is if he can trump that by appealing to the values and their rights. >> it will be a long year, won't it? ron brownstein, thank you for joining us. >> thank you for having me. law enforcement investigators say they are looking into a hit-and-run incident targeting an arab muslim student at stanford university as a hate crime. the school is investigating four other potential hate crimes that have occurred on campus since the october 7th hamas attacks on israel. cnn's camilla banal has more. >> i've been feeling sad. i've been feeling anxious. i've been feeling worried. >> reporter: this is how he and others are feeling as palestinian americans, as muslims and students at stanford university. >> it's scary this type of hate can happen in a police i'm place i'm supposed to feel at home. >> reporter: the university's department of public safety now investigating five incidents. since the onset of the israel-hamas war. the most recent happening friday. the university saying it was an apparent hit-and-run crash, involving an arab muslim student on campus. >> it's hard to fathom that it could take place. it's now a reality we have to live with. >> reporter: in a statement, the university saying that stanford considering anti-arab and islam phobic acts abhorrent. the driver is reported to make eye contact with the victim, accelerated and struck the victim and drove away shouting f-you and your people out the window. >> the fact that it turned into something of this magnitude is, again, scary. >> reporter: other incidents included a group of students being involved. a student being sat on, and someone running over a tote bag that contained a computer and other valuables. >> what's going on abroad shouldn't have the impact on the healths and the lives on a campus thousands of miles away. >> reporter: a mizuzah, was removed from the residence. in a statement, the school said this removal of a religious symbol is deemed intimidation at the jewish community. students on both sides say they are concerned about the incidents. and students worry about the future. >> we have to be constantly alert. constantly on-edge. it's exhausting having to watch over your shoulder 24/7. >> reporter: authorities are still searching for the suspect in the hit-and-run. he is believed to have been driving a toyota 4-runner. in terms of the victim, he is still at the hospital. told me, he's not ready for an on-camera interview. but said he wants to advocate for love, for understanding, and inclusivity. the other students i talk to told me agree and support that message, but are also extremely concerned. damar hamlin have set up a program named after the medical team that saved his life. he had dinner wiwith ten member of the university of cincinnati medical staff. it was ten months ago whenen hamlin went into cardiac arres during an nfl game against the cincinnati bengals. at the dinner, hamlin surprised the medical workers with a scholarship named after each of them, to support local students. thank you for your company this hour. i'm rosemary church. i'll be back with more cnn newsroom in just a moment. stay with us. in a crisis caused by a terrorist massacre. warning civilians to clear out, while hamas forces them back. allowing in food and water, which hamas steals.
