that coalition ironically includes the new york city mayor eric adams and the chicago mayor brandon johnson, both mayors of sanctuary cities. they're asking for $5 billion in federal funding to house thousands of asylum seekers. we ex pect to hear from the mayors making the rounds in washington. more as it happens. first this. that was the scene recently on the fight to flee gaza. egypt allowing the first evacuees through the rafah border crossing. at least five americans among them. sources telling fox news 400 americans have been cleared to follow suit. whether that happens today or not is something we await. i'm bill hemmer live in new york city. team is back together. >> dana: i'm dana perino and this is "america's newsroom." it is astounding the mayors have to come begging the white house for help on a problem the white house is refusing to solve. we'll cover that but also get you to this. the increased fighting in gaza is putting pressure on the white house to get the americans out. we'll hear from a father whose daughter and grandchildren are waiting to evacuate today. >> bill: president biden is calling for a pause in the fighting and that statement seen as a departure from his backing of israel. experts warn any type of cease-fire would give hamas a chance to regroup. >> dana: mark meredith is reporting live from the white house. good morning. >> good morning to you. the president is calling for a pause of israel's military campaign against hamas. the president says a pause would be justified for humanitarian reasons and as they try to get so many foreign nationals including hundreds of americans out of gaza. the decision is also a notable change from some comments we've been hearing from the white house lately. the president was in minnesota yesterday for multiple events. one an economic speech. the other a fundraiser. while at the fundraiser giving remarks that a rabbi with jewish voice for peace identified as jessica rosenberg shouted at the president heckling him calling for a cease-fire. listen. >> mr. president, do you care about jewish people? as a rabbi i need you to call for a cease-fire right now. >> the president then responded to that person from the print pool with him saying i think we need a pause. a pause gives time to get the prisoners to give time. we'll see if the president clarifies the remarks today. increasing pressure from members of his own party to stop the bloodshed. concerns among democrats the president continued strong support of israel could cost him politically next november. associated press reporting some michigan democrats are warning the white house that he could lose their swing state and at 16 electoral votes if support continues to drop among arab americans. facing growing questions about efforts to get americans held hostage in gaza home. the white house says it is doing all it can to save the americans being held against their will as well as those trapped unable to leave. some lawmakers telling fox that the lack of detail coming from the white house is unacceptable. >> we've seen the releases of people from other countries but aishah, these individuals need to be out of gaza and it is just frustrating when we can't get a straight answer from the administration. when we can't even find out exactly how many people are being held there. >> we'll see if the white house clarifies later today responding to the senator the president welcoming the leaders of the dominican republic and chile to the white house today. >> dana: confusing to me. no pause is needed if hamas releases the hostages. >> it is confusing. i don't know where it leads us. it's possible we've cut a deal on the side with qatar to get the cease-fire. we'll hang on throughout the day and see whether or not the 400 americans get out. the region as we know here. looking at it for several weeks, upwards of a month. gaza strip here along the mediterranean sea. the israelis told all people living in the northern gaza strip around gaza city to move to the south and get out of the area. two ways to do that. take the coastal route along the eastern sea. the center route to rafah gate down in the southern part that leads to sinai in egypt. to give you a sense of what we're talking about. 2.2 million people in gaza. the strip along the mediterranean is 25 miles. the fence they cross october 7th is 37.3 miles. northern gate is closed, southern gate is closed. rafah gate is the only way out. when and how do they allow these people to leave caught up in this now? think about the history. in 2005 the israelis under prime minister sharon pulled all israeli settlements out of gaza. 2006 they held election. one side was hat yeah and one was hamas. hamas won. they fought a war among these groups a year later in 2007. the battle of gaza. hamas won that. hamas has been in charge of these 2 million people now for 16 years. it's their responsibility to govern. you can decide for yourself how well they have done thus far. one other thing here quickly, most of the action northern gaza strip now. this is gaza city you will see a lot of action here. everything in the circle here are areas of significant fighting. these are the israeli ground operations taking place right now. so far in yellow, these are the spots where the israelis claim they have made advances. it will be a long battle and prime minister netanyahu made that clear just this week. dana. >> dana: joining us now is john roche en berger, his daughter, son-in-law and five grandchildren are stuck in gaza waiting to get out. do you think today could be the day when they get to leave? what do you hear? >> we talked to her -- thank you, dana and bill for being on the show. we probably got 90 to 95% of our information watching fox news. so thank you. a call-out to bill tobin. he helped us connect with my daughter. my daughter is at the border with her five children. they were able to source the lists that are post evidence today. there is a list of 400 americans that they are posted today. she is number 115 on the list. i talked to her at 2:00 a.m. eastern time. she said dad, it is so hard to get a line in or communications at the border. as soon as i have news and update i will call you. we're on needles and pins to see whether or not she has been able to get into and get processed out. we have not heard from her. our only challenge is her husband, a british citizen, was not on the american list, and there are no u.k. nationals on today's evacuation list. so it looks like she will have to go through the crossing and cross into egypt and then head to cairo without her husband unless he can segue his argument at the border. that's our main concern. she has all five grandchildren. >> dana: they would be able to leave with her if she gets to leave today. >> yes, they're all on the list and u.s. citizens all born in manchester, england, but my daughter was on the spot and they have both u.k. and u.s. passports. they will be using their u.s. passports today. >> bill: we wish the best of luck and we -- what we don't want to hear is hamas to use americans to add to that list of hostages. i'm sure you are well aware of it and praying four and hang tough. thank you for being here. >> thank you very much. >> dana: thank you, john. we have a stunning reversal from president biden. he is now saying he would support a pause in fighting in israel's war against hamas after a heckler interrupted his remarks during a campaign event yesterday and demanded a cease-fire. we have a senior advisor to former secretary of state mike pompeo. is it possible the president misspoke, mary? >> well, it's great to be back with you, dana. i can't see into the president's mind . i understand his instinct to want to preserve human life. a laudable instinct. unfortunately he is pressuring the aggrieved party and not the aggressor, which is iran and its proxies in this case hamas. i think unfortunately, too, he is on the defensive. you see antony blinken flying around the middle east trying to make deals to get americans like the family of your last guest out of gaza, d.o.d. frantically sending assets to the region. the president making statements instead of getting on the front foot and saying iran is the problem, here is what we are going to do to you if any american is harmed. and hamas, you need to cease the attacks on israel. aggressor we need to be focused on here not the aggrieved. >> bill: this was in minnesota last night. this is call for number two. watch. >> mr. president, do you care about jewish people? as a rabbi i need you to call for a cease-fire right now. >> bill: that was the question from the crowd there as she began mr. president. as a rabbi i need you to call for a cease-fire right now. meanwhile you have the leader of hamas doing an interview sometime after october 7th. watch this. >> israel is a country that has no place on our land. we must remove that country. we must teach is rail a lesson and we'll do this again and again. this is just the first time. there will be a second, third, fourth. october 1 million. everything we do is justified. >> bill: that's what they're up against. >> i think there are several lessons to take from those statements and this is what i'm telling our clients. when people tell you who they are, you should believe them. secondly, until the u.s. reestablishes deterrents you will hear more threats like this and see a widening of the conflict. bill, this conflict has the potential to reshape the middle east in the same way that world war i reshaped the contours of europe. and so we should believe hamas. they have extraordinary support not just from iran but from a terrorist financing network that stretches all the way over to malaysia and throughout the gulf. you have other proxies likes hezbollah in our backyard in portions of latin america. the houthi rebels in yemen and the hezbollah leader make a major speech in lebanon. we'll find out from that speech if he has any fear of real consequences if he opens up a second front. but we have to get off the back foot and we have to -- we have got to exact some consequences on tehran. >> dana: sorry to interrupt. i want to get this before they make us say goodbye to you. take me inside the state department. you have experience there. how is it that hamas is dictating which americans get to leave? okay? so why isn't qatar, if they're friend and ally, the ones that can talk to hamas for us, how in the world are we in a position where hamas gets to dictate when americans get to leave so somebody like john has to be up at 2:00 in the morning on pins and needles waiting to see if his daughter and the five grandchildren are going to be able to leave today? >> the instinct of the state department, the incentive structure is always to avoid conflict and tough negotiations. it really depends on leadership from the top, not just from secretary antony blinken but from president biden giving them the leverage to force these folks to the table and to force them to give us our hostages. that's just not happening. the bureaucracy of the state department is not going to do that on its own. its instincts are in the opposite direction. >> dana: thank you. >> great to be with you. >> we have been more people come into system than leaving the system. we need to address that. >> bill: there are mayors of five democratic-run city coming hat in hand to the white house begging for money, a lot of it dealing with a surge of migrants. we expect to hear from those mayors shortly. stay tuned for that. >> dana: israel's defensive war against hamas intensified putting more pressure on the terror group. >> pro-palestinians activist finding a new way to show their hatred toward israel and jewish nation tearing down posters of hostages being held even today by hamas. >> colonize somewhere else. >> shame on you. shame on you. >> free palestinian.ca n't get an because of your credit? >> i believe bombing of refugee camp is a human rights violation. i believe it's a war crime. >> dana: how does that square with what you are seeing on the ground? >> this is my seventh war. every war i've covered someone raised the specter of white phosphorous. you can't use it in a densely populated area because it's damaging if you breathe in concentrated amounts. it can be used for smoke. israeli defense force told me they do indeed use white phosphorous to create smoke but in accordance with international law. >> dana: thank you for that clarification. good to know. >> you have my number. >> don't touch me. don't touch me. don't touch me. >> get out of here. >> bill: that's new york city happened this week. pro-palestinian protestors tearing down the flyers that have been put up in various places all throughout the fire areas. people kidnapped by hamas leading to a proxy battle on city streets around the world. cb cotton is live. new york city's upper west side with more on this now. good morning. >> good morning. these flyers of kidnapped israelis are quiet by urgent reminder of the more than 200 families torn apart by hamas terrorists. war of words when people are caught taking them down on city streets. >> don't touch me. no, don't touch me. >> get out of here. >> this group of people appearing to confront a man who police say was ripping down israeli hostages posters in new york city. he is now charged with harassment. disorderly conduct. obstruction. nypd saying the hate crime task force is investigating this as a possible case of bias. one of the latest confrontations in the city. on friday also in new york this man appearing to take down the flyers, the person holding the phone goes after him saying they are kidnapping civilians, women, children, grandmothers. similar scenes happening on college campuses. these three were captured ripping down flyers at nyu. an investigation is ongoing. israeli american citizen who helps put up the flyers says anti-semitism is motivating people to take them down. >> the evil is to pull down a kidnap sign of a four mott whose parents were killed and your reaction is to pull it down. i don't care where that poster is. it shows a complete lack of humanity. >> as videos continue to surface of the flyers getting taken down the aclu is asking more than 650 colleges and universities to reject investigation of or punishment of student pro-palestinian groups saying they are exercising their free speech rights. >> bill: cb cotton, that beat goes on in new york. >> dana: the auschwitz museum is a drop in followers on x. our account has lost over 6100 followers in october. that's why we continue to ask for your engagement. you create this incredible community and help us all remember. the post comes as anti-israel protests are happening in major cities across the globe. one person wrote this. my father survived auschwitz. his testimony is especially relevant now in the after math of hamas's october 7th attack. watch the video showing young gaza children being taught to worship terror. listen to the words of hamas leaders declaring that gazans seek martyrdom and israel issues warning to prevent civilian casualties. >> bill: one of the times i met him was the holocaust museum in jerusalem. impressive man who somehow came out of the second world war and managed to find a way and a life of peace and so impressive. we lost him a couple of years ago at the age of 87. one thing to keep in mind that we were just talking about looking at the video here. when these protestors come out wherever they are across the u.s., so many are wearing masks. why is that? why would they not want their faces to be known? >> dana: they say they're being docsed and losing jobs. they don't have the courage of their convictions to actually -- they want free speech. you can have it. wear a mask. figure it out. it's interesting the university at nyu says there is a full investigation going on. the investigation would take me three seconds. i would figure it off quickly and we know what's happening. >> bill: we have bidenomics at the breakfast table. the price of cereal is shocking americans prompting some jitters at the white house. we'll explain why. migrant crisis getting so out of hand forcing democratic mayors to go to biden's doorstep and tell you what they are demanding in a moment. >> the city of chicago cannot go on welcoming new arrivals safely and capably without significant support. >> i'm hoping everyone understands that new york city has done more than its share. meet gold bond daily healing. a powerhouse lotion that moisturizes, heals, and smooths dry skin. with 7 moisturizers & 3 vitamins. and... new gold bond healing sensitive. clinically shown to heal & moisturize
