CNNW Piers Morgan Tonight February 16, 2012

there's always another bottom waiting for you. >> the santorum surge. >> as president of the united states, i'll have your back. >> what does he say about ads like this? >> mitt romney's attacks are going to backfire. >> i'll ask rick santorum tonight. only in america, from a school chorus to here. this is "piers morgan tonight." good evening. the big story tonight, breaking news in the whitney houston investigation. the cause of death listed as deferred. whitney houston was seen drinking considerable quantities of alcohol before 10:00 a.m. wednesday and thursday. we'll have more on that in a moment. my interview with rick santorum. why it has a harmful effect on america. >> that's why this is so disturbing. you see the royalty of america setting such a poor example and being troubled by these things that obviously are going to have a downstream effect and a harmful downstream effect. >> more from rick santorum later. breaks news on the whitney houston investigation. don lemon has more. don, you have unearthed fascinating detail here. quite disturbing detail. tell me what you found out. >> there are disturbing details that contra duct what some of her friends with her said she wasn't acting erratically in the days before her death. days before her death, houston was seen ordering and consuming considerable quantities of alcohol before 10:00 a.m. in the morning on wednesday and thursday at the beverly hilton at the bar and around the pool. also, piers, saying she was doing somersaults and jumping into the pool. guests became concerned about it and heard her -- they overheard her saying the bartenders were watering down her drinks and putting too much ice in her drinks. this is just days before whitney houston was found dead. sometimes she was by herself walking from the bar to the pool. other times they say she was with an entronlg and a male companion days before her death. >> what do we know about when we are going to find out real details from the toxicology report? a lot rests on that, i imagine, in terms of where the investigation goes in terms of which doctor she was seeing, which prescriptions and what drugs she was taking. >> yeah. there are two facets here. one is toxicology report. the other, they have given subpoenas to doctors and pharmacies. as far as the toxicology report instead of six to eight weeks, the coroner tells me he expedited for the results of the toxicology reports. he wants to get them within four to six weeks or sooner. you know about subpoenas that have been issued to pharmacies and doctors here on the west coast and the east coast as well to figure out what was prescribed to her and who filled it. >> the issue with whitney houston and many stars in hollywood is this curious situation where they go to numerous doctors, numerous prescriptions from numerous pharmacies and nobody can connect the dots. >> yeah. here is the thing. a normal person, piers, even after this, what happens is you go to the doctor and say oh, i have a back ache. he says you have to go to the dentist, this has to do with your jaw. it's tmj. you get a prescription from the dentist, then the doctor. they want to make sure she wasn't doctor shopping and pharmacy shopping. they are saying she wasn't at this point, but they want to make sure, piers. >> one thing is for sure. the drugs they found in her hotel room should not be mixed with alcohol, right? >> absolutely. whatever they found -- no prescription medication should be mixed with alcohol. and according to the source, she was drinking heavily the days before. she was taking the medication found in her hotel room, that's a problem. >> thanks, as always. great work on the detail of the investigation. thank you. several prescription drugs were found in her hotel room. the doctors who prescribed them could be to blame. joining me now, a cordologist who testified against michael jackson's doctor, dr. conrad murray. i'm fascinated by what your take is on the whitney houston case, so far. >> it's an unfortunate case for whitney houston, her friends and family. it looks like it's unfortunate to see the, hopefully it's not similar but the similar thing happened to michael jackson and anna nicole smith. >> tell me about this cult in hollywood of celebrities able to get endless prescriptions from endless doctors at the same time. what do you know about that? should it be better regulated and is it unique to los angeles? >> i don't think it's unique to los angeles. any patient that is addicted to prescription drugs or drugs can go to different doctors and doctor shop and go to pharmacies and hide below the radar of the system. celebrities have additional help because they have other people to get prescriptions for them, they can buy them on the street through assistance. they sometimes manipulate their doctors better. the doctors are intimidated by them and want to make them happy. those three combinations are an additional way by celebrities. we see it all over the country. the celebrities make the biggest news and continue to hear it here. >> we don't know the facts yet of what was in her body or what she had taken. what we do know is what they found in the hotel room in terms of xanax and other prescription drugs. what i have been hearing from dr. drew and others, sanjay gupta and others, a lot of anger about a lack of awareness or knowledge from the general public about the dangers of mixing prescription drugs with alcohol. >> absolutely, there's a danger. it's probably what happened with miss houston. as you know, they suppress consciousness and respiratory drive like with michael jackson, the propofol made him stop breathing. the same with miss houston. someone with a history of addictions got these medications at all. she should have been warned that alcohol cannot only add to this, decrease your respiratory drive and consciousness. they work on the receptors and increase the level of it. it's extremely dangerous. it's probably what we are guessing led to her demise. >> would it be negligent for a doctor to prescribe whitney houston with the drugs she had if they knew her to be an addict? >> it depends on a lot of things. first of all, i'm a cardiologist. i can't completely talk about it. i practice within my boundaries. that's general knowledge that people with addictive personalities need to avoid it and send them to specialists. the specialist has to be careful and they understand the risks and benefits. that's one thing that needs to be clarified. the other thing is, we need to say sometimes no to patients. as you ask, patients -- it's common knowledge but it's up to doctors to give consent. we should talk about the risks, benefits and things to watch out for. someone like miss houston with an addictive personality, it's common knowledge to be very, very careful in giving these medications. we found multiple medications, sedatives, is concerning among doctors. >> thank you very much indeed. >> thank you. i want to turn to a man who knows more about this issue than almost anybody else. he's one of the wildest men in rock history. he's had a history with drugs. he joins me now exclusively. the reason you came on the show, you have been watching my show the last few nights and getting increasingly angry, as you put it to me about the way the music business is trying to almost, through self-denial pretend whitney houston's death had nothing to do with it. >> when i e-mailed you, you had the courage to ask the strong questions. a lot of times people don't want to hear that question and answer that. the enablers, the people making the money off the artists don't want to say no. they don't want to get fired. if you are the accountant, you don't say i'm going to walk away from you if you don't clean up. if you are the manager, they are not going to pull you off the road, baa they stop making a commission. you are the record company. you want to keep making records. if you have to fill their nose with alcohol, cocaine, pills, you have your own best interest at heart, not the artist. that's the problem we have. >> what was your reaction when you heard whitney houston died? >> you know, my reaction was i took to my twitter account and said what's scummy about the music industry is everybody loves you when you are dead. i was interested in what people were saying. i was hoping they would say we tried. we stood by her. she's admitted public figure, is an alcoholic, right? as myself. i'm a recovering drug addict and alcoholic. she's out drinking. with people and they are standing by her side and letting her drink. they are letting her do what it is she wants to do as an addict. i don't know her and i'm not talking about her. you know, when i reached out to you, it was really, we have amy winehouse, michael jackson, we have a long list of artists that fall prey to the enablers. that's really what -- what really amazing me after all this time, nobody can see that. i think the young artists need to hear this. they need to hear the questions you are asking and hear what i'm saying right now. they are going to fall prey to it, too. when whitney houston or nikki, sixx, we had courage to believe in ourselves. at what point do we lose the courage and let other people run our lives? >> what becomes a common theme is whitney houston was strong-willed and didn't want to be told what to do. what would you say to that argument? >> i too, am strong willed. i was told, if i continue to use drugs, my manager would walk away. that was the only person that would say it to me. it was the kick in the ass i needed to pull my life together. i was sober before that, but i slipped and fell off the wagon. it does happen. it happens all the time. if somebody stands by an alcoholic, a drug addict and lets them keep ticking along, eventually, their ticker is going to stop. that's what happens. in this case, and many other cases, that's the issue to look at. >> let's take a break, nikki, and come back and talk about the issue of celebrity doctors in hollywood who seem to dish out any drugs a celebrity wants and there are multiple different places they can get them. it's like anywhere else in the world, the availability and the willingness to bend the rules. let's talk about that after the break. >> perfect. i'm good about washing my face. but sometimes i wonder... what's left behind? [ female announcer ] travelocity. get great deals on all kinds of beach vacations. is it alcohol? is it marijuana? is it cocaine? is it pills? >> it has been, at times -- >> all? >> at times. >> if you had to name the devil, for you, the biggest devil among them? >> that would be me. >> that was whitney houston talking to diane sauer in 2002. nikki sixx is back with us. let's talk with the celebrity doctors. how easy has it been for you to get pretty much any drug you like? >> i'm in a unique situation where i actually never had a rock doc as they call them. i went the dirtier route, being in a rock band, went to the street. that's really where we scored our drugs. it's a lot of the people who came, middle '80s where the rock doc was a big part of enabling the drug addict. >> how does it work in reality. how do the rock docs go about their business? >> i don't really understand how it works. it's a big concern is how does it -- how does nobody get caught doing this? you know, i don't have experience in that field. i imagine if you are getting different prescriptions filled from different doctors, there has to be a check and balance in there somewhere. >> there doesn't seem to be the regulation there ought to be. there's no running data base or if there is, it's ignored. if you are a michael jackson or whitney houston, you can load up on prescription drugs, go to six, seven, eight nine doctors if you would like. you can send assistants and not use your name. it's easy to hide the overall consumption. >> absolutely, we see it all the time. back to the handlers, the road managers and the people answering to the lawyers, the managers, the accountants and obviously the record labels, where does the fault lie? is it with the artist? i mean i had to find the courage to turn my life around but there was a time, it took a minute for me to wake up and realize that i was just a slave to the system. i was being put out there for months and months and months to work. everybody gets paid on the gross. i don't understand how that isn't more of the subject people are talking about now. >> certainly the exposure i have had to people in the business, if you are a major star in the music business, you are worked like a dog. when you add the pressure of life, whitney houston did little live performing. she rarely went on tour. she has anxiety. it all builds up. very rarely see are people taking responsibility down the food chain from the rock stars because actually, they want their money. >> piers, can i ask you a question? >> sure. >> if i went to your house for dinner and you know i'm a recovering alcoholic and i ask for a glass of wine with dinner, what would you say? >> this to me comes to the absolute crux of this because it's not like we are best friends or i know you that well but i know you are a recovering addict. i have talked to you about it before in depth. it's crucial to you that you stay on the straight and narrow. i think i would feel the responsibility not to give you that drink. >> that's what needs to happen. >> more people need to do that. certainly, if it was a very good friend of mine, no way. what staggers me about whitney houston is she was right at the end surrounded by very, very close people to her that she's known for a long time that know her issues allowing her to carry on. that is inexcusable. >> that's the right answer. >> whitney houston, twice before she died was seen drinking at 10:00 in the morning, complaining about the drinks not strong enough. rolling out of nightclubs in early hours with what looks like blood, may have been red wine dripping down her legs drinking champagne with people saying she was fine. she's an addict doing this. >> there are pressures. there's enormous amount of pressure for all of us in life, in general. who is going to be held accountable? obviously, i have to hold myself accountable. i have to stay sober. i have a family and i have a lot of reasons to stay sober. most of all to myself. who is going to be accountable? who is handing these people champagne, alcohol, pills, cocaine? who is writing the scripts? who is keeping them on the road or off the road? who are they and how do we hold them accountable? that's the question there. how do we hold them accountable? >> that's the question. nikki sixx. thank you very much. coming up, the worst thing about hitting rock bottom is there's another rock bottom waiting for you, that's daniel baldwin. and who ordered the yummy cereal? yummy. [ woman ] lower cholesterol. [ man 2 ] yummy. i got that wrong didn't i? [ male announcer ] want great taste and whole grain oats that can help lower cholesterol? honey nut cheerios. that can help lower cholesterol? vacations are always wasn'ta good ideaa ♪ priceline negoti - - no time. out quickly. you're miles from your destination. you'll need a hotel tonight we don't have time to bid you don't have to bid. at priceline you can choose from thousands of hotels on sale every day. save yourself... some money yoyou u wawalklk i intna coconvnvenentitiononalal ms ststorore,e, i it't's s ry nonot t ababouout t yoy. ththeyey s sayay, , "w"weleu wawantnt a a f firirm m bebn lilie e onon o onene o of ff yoyou u wawantnt a a s sofou cacan n lilie e onon o onene o " wewe p prorovividede t thet inindidivividudualalizizatat yoyourur b bodody y neneede. wewelclcomome e toto t thehe slsleeeep p nunumbmberer . nonot t jujustst o ordrdininaran sasalele, , bubut t ththe e bn chchanangege y youour r lilifef. ththe e slsleeeep p nunumb. ththisis i is s yoyourur b bodo. yoyou u cacan n sesee e a a lile prpresessusurere i in n ththe es anand d inin t thehe h hipi. nonow w yoyou u cacan n fet hahappppenens s asas w we e rarr slsleeeep p nunumbmberer s seted alallolow w ththe e bebed d totr toto y youour r inindidivividud. wowow!w! ththatat f feeeelsls r reae. itit's's h huguggigingng m. itit's's n notot a abobt sosoftft o or r fifirm. itit's's a aboboutut s supuppope yoyou u fifindnd i it t momost. ririghght t nonow,w, q queun mamattttreresssseses s statartr. anand d sasaveve a an n asag 5050% % onon t thehe f fininalat ofof o ourur i innnnovovatae lilimimiteted d ededititio. yoyou u cacan n adadjujustst i r yoyou u wawantnt s so o yoyoue toto w wororryry a aboboutg ththe e wrwronong g mamat. huhurrrry y ththisis w weeee ulultitimamatete s sleleepep n. ononlyly a at t onone e ofo0 slsleeeep p nunumbmberer s. first of all, let's get one thing straight. crack is keep. i made too much money to ever smoke crack. let's get that straight, okay. i don't do crack. i don't do that. crack is whacked. >> stunning moment for whitney houston on abc in 2005. joining us is daniel baldwin. he met whitney houston a number of times and doesn't think she wanted to get sober. why do you think she didn't want to get sober. >> the first three steps and 12 steps require no action. they are decisions and commitments you make, then you put these things you learn into action. you know, from what i understand from people i have heard from and obviously the outcome of the situation, i don't think she was applying herself and taking action to maintain her sobriety. >> people are tweeting me saying the woman carried on taking drugs and taking alcohol, why should we feel sorry for her. what is your reaction to that as a former addict? >> i mean, it's two-fold. it's a double edged sword. there's a side of me that think it's sad for anyone to die and succumb to this disease. i feel worse for somebody that doesn't have access like i or whitney houston had. this is a person, back in the day when she was bigger and hotter than this time, everybody and their brother wanted to see her get sober. they didn't want to see her lose her cool. everyone wanted to help her. at the end of the day, it becomes your responsibility to make the changes and implement them in your life. >> when you met her, how did you find her? >> very engaging. she was -- when she warmed up a little bit. i had friends in the music business that knew her. i got to sit and speak with her a couple times. a little bit shy. once she got warmed up to you and felt safe, i guess, she was a very nice woman, from what i saw. >> what nikki was saying, which i thought
