pillsbury grands biscuits. make breakfast even better. grands biscuits. make breakfast pop. this morning on "world news now" -- difficult search. the challenges for crews looking for bodies and wreckage after the airasia crash. the rough weather this morning and the tremendous grief for families. extreme weather. winter's blast from coast to coast. from fierce winds in the west to snow and ice in the middle of the country. the deep freeze on new year's eve. avalanche anxiety. how a quick-thinking couple managed to escape from a wall of falling ice and snow. the jaw-dropping series of events. later in "the skinny," kim kardashian's decision. what she's absolutely refusing to do. to keep her youth and avoid looking older. it's new year's eve, december 31st. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning on this new year's eve. i'm reena ninan. >> i'm kendis gibson in for t.j. holmes. it's great bringing in the new year's eve with you. it's almost new year's in samoa. coconut drop at 5:00 a.m. eastern time. >> if i would have known i would have brought a coconut drink in. we're following the latest from overseas. the investigation into the crash of the airasia jet. the search area is now narrowing after more bodies and debris recovered. but the rough weather is slowing those efforts. >> experts say there are already signs of a mid-air breakup. abc's joohee cho begins our coverage from indonesia. >> reporter: so far at least six bodies have been retrieved. one female body was still in flight attendant uniform. 17 helicopters, dozens of divers at the site hoping for better conditions. the "uss sampson" has also joined the operation since yesterday. the vessel equipped with sonar detecting system and search and rescue helicopters. meanwhile, air asia is collecting dna samples from the families here in surabaya in order to match the bodies as they come in later in the day. some were found without clothes which leads to a question as to what really caused that plane to crash. experts say it could have been an in-flight explosion or some say it could have been a wind blast. answers will come once those black boxes are retrieved. we'll know more about what happened to flight 8501 as the jet's black box are recovered. but the debris already found is provide something clues. our coverage continues with abc's david kerley. >> reporter: a suitcase, an oxygen tank and uninflated emergency slide. these pieces of the airbus a320 and those floating on the java sea all clues to why this aircraft crashed. what do they tell us? so far the bodies found did not have life vests. that could indicate it broke apart at altitude. the crew didn't have time to communicate trouble or passengers didn't have time to put them on. do those pieces of metal wreckage have burn marks suggesting fire or explosion? the way the metal is pulled apart, its edges can indicate whether it was impact with water or other forces. >> once you have the debris, you look at it all. fire stands out. explosion stand out. was it ripped apart or was something else going on here. >> this debris field also tells a story. if it is relatively small that would suggest the jetliner was mostly intact when it hit the water. a much wider field could mean a breakup at altitude and the pieces scrambling as they fell into the sea. this debris field is also an arrow pointing to where the wreckage has settled to the bottom and where they should find those all-important black boxes. david kerley, abc news, new york. >> stay with abc news every step of the way as investigators uncover more clues. look for updates online at abcnews.com and later on "america this morning" and "good morning america." disturbing violence in edmonton. police are investigating nine deaths linked to the same gunman. one body was found monday evening. a few hours later at a second location, seven more victims, including children. then at a third location, the suspected shooter was found dead apparently a suicide. >> and our thoughts go out to the community as we all come to terms with the senseless mass murder of eight people. four female adults, two male adults and two young children, one male and one female. >> the police chief went on to say the deaths were, quote, tragic incidents of domestic violence. it's the worst mass killing edmonton has seen since at least 1956. that's when six people were murdered. in idaho, a heartbreaking and deadly accident at a walmart. a young mother shot and killed by her 2-year-old son while shopping with her children. the boy was sitting in a shopping cart and pulled the loaded handgun from his mother's purse and pulled the trigger. she died at the scene. detectives say the family was visiting from out of town. >> especially here it is around the holidays just after christmas, right before the new year. tragic. tragic accident. >> the sheriff's office says the surveillance video confirms the details of the accident. walmart closed the store and brought in grief counselors. an icy blast is moving across the country as 2014 ends, often bringing with it extreme weather and tragedy. it's colder than usual in practically every part of the country. john ehrlichman has the latest. >> reporter: from 40-mile-an-hour winds in utah to the california cold where rose paraders may experience the lowest temperatures since 1952. states nationwide are prepping for chilly weather. winter storm warnings from denver to the vegas strip where it hasn't snowed since 2008. in kansas, the combination of wind and cold wreaking havoc on the roads. in northern california, falling trees killing two people. in georgia, a town recovering after being hit by a reported tornado. >> we were just trying to get up under vehicles to avoid it because the top of the building was just flying off. all you could see was roof just being peeled apart. >> reporter: the storm activity could cause travel delays this weekend both in the midwest and along the east coast. john ehrlichman, abc news, los angeles. here's a look at your weather. snow showers are likely in some parts of new england and around the great lakes. showers in south florida and southern texas. heavy snow possible in higher elevations of arizona and utah. and lighter snow in the high deserts of california and nevada. 20s in salt lake city, denver and chicago. 30s in portland, memphis and boston. 40s in dallas and atlanta. 59 in los angeles. and 80 in miami. that's where i'd like to be, miami. news from the world of sports with the domestic abuse case against u.s. women's soccer team goalie hope solo. she was in court near seattle yesterday asking a judge to dismiss that case. solo is charged with assaulting her half-sister and nephew at a party in june. her attorney claims witnesses have been uncooperative during depositions. the judge ordered more questioning to take place on friday. if solo's dismissal motion is turned down, her trial would start january 20th. meantime, this incident from the lions/packers game is going to cost detroit lineman ndamukong suh -- did i pronounce that right? >> no, donkey kong suh. >> 70 grand. but it won't mean a one-game suspension anymore. suh won an appeal yesterday in which that suspension was changed to the hefty fine. that means he'll play in sunday's wild card playoff game against dallas. >> that's going to be tough. >> i'm embarrassed to say that jack our producer told me the pronunciation. >> it's tough when you see it in the prompter rolling at you. cam newton, look at that. he just says donkey kong sue. that works. and a football assistant who hit a couple of opponents with cheap shots on tuesday is no longer part of the aggie football program. michael richardson was dismissed from the team after being seen striking west virginia players during their liberty bowl matchup. richardson apologized for the incidents calling them uncalled for. next to a strange scene in chicago. the wall of a salt storage facility collapsed spilling tons of the stuff on to cars at the dealership next door. as many as 11 cars were buried. most belonging to service customers. only three or four were new. the fire department says they had exceeded capacity stressing the wall. and remember this awesome sight? a sinkhole that swallowed up eight rare cars at the national corvette museum last february. this week the work of filling it up is finally under way. construction crews are pouring gravel into the hole. the two remote control bobcats are leveling it out. the repair work is expected to last until july. a health headline this morning. another reason not to binge drink for new year's or any time for that matter. a new study says binge drinking in youth, healthy adults significantly disrupts the immune system. researchers found 20 minutes after reaching peak intoxication, a drinker's immune system is revved up, but in the hours that follow it's compromised becoming less active than when the drinker is sober. >> thank you for sharing that on new year's eve. >> we
