school shortly but the principal won't be here. we'll tell you what authorities found in his home. well, welcome to "mornings on 2". i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's monday, september 24th. ear continuing to follow -- we're continuing to follow the details in a deadly crash. allie rasmus has more. >> reporter: traffic is moving again and all lanes of southbound 680 in pleasanton. the chp opened up all lanes of the highway about 30 about-- 30 minutes ago. we're next to stoneridge drive, which is where the accident happened. at 4:00 this morning, a car struck and killed a pedestrian. the chp responded to a call. they did a traffic break and quickly shut down 680 southbound. for an hour and a half, up until 5:30 this morning, traffic was at a complete standstill at the stoneridge exit. drivers heading from the east bay to the south bay were stuck in their tracks and then at 5:30, the chp opened up the far left shoulder to let one lane through. the question for chp investigators this morning, why this pedestrian was in the freeway in the first place? >> it was not a hit and run. the person stayed. >> what did they tell you? >> we can't tell you exactly what happened. >> reporter: now, the chp is not sure if the victim, if the pedestrian was struck by one or multiple cars by 680. one driver did stop. that's why the chp says that's why they are not considering this a hit and run. the chp is not releasing the identity of the victim. all they are saying at this point, it was an adult male struck and killed. you are looking at southbound 680, you can see traffic moving again. 30 minutes ago, the chp opened it back up. there were a lot of details and a lot of people trying to take the side streets. so there's still some problems in the east bay. for more, let's go to sal. >> you are right. 580 is especially bad because of this. if you are taking 580 -- all of the lanes are open. i cannot recommend something that's gonna be less crowded than the others. all of the lanes are now open as you heard alley say. 84 is not a good alternative. a lot of people have been using that out of downtown livermore. we've seen a little bit of improvement. if you want to stay on the freeway, i think that's your best shot on 580 because some of the side roads have been jammed up. 680, you can also stay on the freeway. if you can get on the freeway, after the stoneridge area, you might do yourself a little bit of a favor heading out towards fremont. we'll have the complete traffic update coming up. at 7:03. back to the desk. 7:04. developing news a major road in hayward closed now because of a police investigation. it happened at tennyson road right near the south hayward b.a.r.t. station. tara moriarty is there. tara? >> reporter: when officers learned that there was gunfire opened at a bar, they acted quickly. a car, a man's body now behind those orange barriers. around 1:00 this morning, bar patrons at the dirty bird lounge say the suspect got into a fight with someone and shot him. he left in his sedan and officers tracked him down less than half a mile away. three officers cornered him. they told him to surrendered. instead, he threw it in reverse and was about to run over them. >> the person in this vehicle is already responsible for shooting one person and then drove his vehicle toward the police officers and his actions needed to be stopped. he was clearly a danger to the community. >> reporter: all officers are on paid leave. the person shot at the bar was taken to the hospital and treated with nonlife- threatening injuries. hayward police are on scene, b.a.r.t. and union police is as well. this intersection near mission and tennyson is shut down. the coroner has not arrived. if you need to get to b.a.r.t., you will not be able to take the tennyson exit. you will be able to take the industrial parkway exit and shoot north. we'll continue to monitor this story and let you know if we have any new developments and if if we learn the identity of the suspect. back to you. in overnight news, police are investigating a fatal shooting. around 10:30, police responded to calls that a man was lying in the street near sycamore and lemon tree way. police say he was dead from a single gunshot wound. police say they are following a few leads but do not have a suspect most description or -- suspect motive or description. police are searching for a driver who knocked down a power pole in oakland. it happened near midnight. the power is on in the area. the wires have been removed and the road has reopened. 7:06. students showing up for class at montague elementary school, they will be given letters to take home about the arrest of their principal. janine de la vega is live outside of the school with more on the drug charges. >> reporter: good morning. school will begin within the next hour. when it does, the students will be greeted by an interim principal. we haven't gotten a chance -- we haven't gotten a chance to speak to them yet. eric dean lewis has been the principal here at montague school. he's now facing if heny drug charges. a tip was received that he was involved in drugs. they had an undercover officer and they found meth and other drugs in his home. >> you certainly don't want to see anything like that in a school. and in your neighborhood and stuff? you don't want to have people like that around. i mean, that's a real disappointment. >> reporter: since lewis's arrest, school officials have placed him on leave. we're told that lewis was involved in the antid.a.r.e. program at the school -- anti- d.a.r.e. program at the school. we're also told that letters will be sent home with the students about what happened and he's expected to be arraigned in court today. back to you. >> thank you. let's check in with sal, once again, for an update on the commute. not a great start for a monday morning. we do have heavy traffic. we've been talking about it since we went on the air at 4:30. now we still have a huge backup on 580 because of an earlier accident on 680 near stoneridge. the crash is gone but the slow traffic will be there for ha lock time. livermore, pleasanton, all the way out to castro valley. there is a small break in the action. we're seeing some improvement, all of the roads are jammed. in is the kind of warning where you wake up and you need to get your routine going faster if you can. let's go out to the bay bridge toll plaza. that's more form normal. san jose is already trying to get some attention here. slow traffic getting into the valley. 101 is also slow, 237 is slow. slow even though we haven't had any major crashes, it is slow. i want to mention the bay bridge toll plaza, i just happened to look over at one of my monitors here and the traffic at the toll plaza is backed up beyond the macarthur maze. so we have a -- i guess the emeryville camera will show it best. it's very, very slow -- i don't even know why -- this is a little bit longer than usual. we'll follow it. we'll get to the bottom of it and thanks to the control room for pulling those up real quick. steve, what's the weather gonna be like today? >> cooler. thank you for asking. a pretty good fog bank out there. making a move inland. helped along by a system that came in yesterday. it will give us higher clouds and warmer conditions inland. that system is moving along, moving into the colorado rockies. for us it's ushered in cooler air aloft. 50s on the temperatures. san jose, 51 degrees. san rafael and santa rosa tied there at 50. kind of a westerly breeze. some component of it and nothing too strong but it's definitely making it out to the delta. that's a sign we'll be cooler. 60s, 70s and also 80s. it looks like we're out of the 90s. our system wrapping itself up, looks pretty good. for us start off cooler. it may be one of the coolest days of the week. it will exit stage right and that will leave sunny conditions after that fog which might be tough to burn off. morning fog a westerly breeze in place. upper 50s to near 90. what? "the new york daily news" obtained arnold schwarzenegger's new book. in the week, schwarzenegger says he told his wife, maria shriver, the truth in january of '11. he said he -- was in a counseling session. he said he knew the boy was his. he said this was politically acceptable because he had not campaigned on family values. a flight attendant claiming a lot of ipad has -- a -- claiming an ipad was lost has kept it for herself. she claims she planned it turn it in but police say they found her personal information on it. the owner used an app to help police found that ipad. a gun accidentally went off the philadelphia international airport yesterday but luckily no one was hurt. the tsa says screeners saw a loaded gun inside of a flight attendant's carry-on bag. that gun accidentally went off when a philadelphia police officer was unlocking it -- unpacking it. a bullet hit the floor. the flight attendant who owns the gun said she forgot it was in her bag and she was cited. a former professor will be in court for trial despite innerring a guilty plea -- entering a guilty plea. amy bishop pleaded guilty to murdering three and injuring others. alabama law requires a jury trial in all capital murder cases. analysts say the trial is mostly a formality and it will be brief. it's the first full week of fall. look out our window. will it feel like it, like it looks like it? live pictures. steve will tell us if cooler temperatures are on the way. and weeks after being hospitalized in italy. we're getting a clue for all of the recent troubles for native billie jo armstrong. good morning. we'll tell you about traffic trouble spots when we come back. vo: for years, sacramento politicians have chopped away funds for our schools. today, we're forty-seventh out of fifty in per-pupil funding. now these politicians say unless we send more tax dollars to sacramento, they'll cut education again. here's a new approach. prop thirty-eight sends billions in new education dollars straight to our local schools, and guarantees the politicians can't touch it. thirty-eight will restore the education cuts from sacramento. so remember this number. thirty-eight. more than 1700 freshmen start classes today at stanford. this will be the first fresh manclass required to take a new general et -- freshmen class required to take a new general ed class. the university also wants them to take a certain number of classes outside of their major. 7:24. we want to check in with sal. we want to see what's happening on the roads. >> it's slow all over the place, tori and dave. a lot of monday grind. 580, i've drawn a big, white arrow to kind of highlight how bad it is. it's slow from tracy out to livermore. this is all because of an earlier crash on 680. and then another one, 680 out of pleasanton. so two crashes. one is serious. another one is heading south. let's go to the south bay where we have slow track here coming out of downtown south bay getting into the valley. it's been slow on 101 this morning as well. at the bay bridge it's slow as well. the traffic will be busy getting into the bay bridge corridor. let's go to steve. >> well, a little bit more fog out there. some of it seems to be working its way around. some of it pulling away. it will be cooler today. inland temperatures which were in the 90s today. they will come down today. this could be one of the cooler days of the week courtesy of the system, into nevada and heading into the rockies, producing some snow. for us, it's kind of cooled off some of the higher elevations. santa rosa yesterday, 85, concord, 89. livermore, 93 on sunday. san jose, 893. all coming down. so about 6, 7 degrees for some today. especially inland. 50s on the temperatures. they haven't moved at all. antioch is clear. our system is moving out. there's one more thin, little rope up there. there are signs of a warmup toward the end of the week. today, slightly cooler. the fog not going anywhere. for some it will be chilly. kind of muggy yesterday, too. quiet pattern. wednesday, it does look like sip -- similar patterns. coming up -- how a fatal accident on 680 involving a pedestrian is still having a big impact on the morning commute. >> reporter: and san francisco's police chief will address concerns later today about a police shooting that prompted angry protests in the mission district over the weekend. we'll tell you about the community meeting tooks -- taking place today. we have a huge traffic problem. 580 is a big mess coming out of the tracy area. this is because of an earlier crash. allie rasmus is on the scene to tell us what happened and why the traffic is so slow this morning? >> reporter: well, a pedestrian was struck and killed on interstate 680 just before the stoneridge drive exit. the big question is why was the pedestrian on the freeway? the answer, investigators don't know. they don't know if he was disoriented, under the influence. that's something they are gonna have to figure out. about an hour ago, the chp reopened all lanes of interstate 680. you can see traffic moving. it's a little bit slow right now. right next to us is the stoneridge drive exit. this is near where the pedestrian vehicle accident happened. it happened at 4:00 a.m. a pedestrian struck and killed. it was not a hit and run. the driver stopped. he was interviewed by the chp for some time. the chp had to do a traffic break and completely shut down 680 southbound for about an hour and a half and it wasn't until -- up until 5:30, traffic was at a complete standstill. drivers heading from the east bay, in some cases drivers heading from the central valley all the way to the south bay were stuck in their tracks including a flight attendant who had to call to let them know she was not gonna make her flight. >> i have been checking the phone and calling in and letting them know so they can call somebody else in if they need to so those passengers needing connect don't miss their flights. >> we've been sitting here. about an hour and a half. >> reporter: at 5:30, the chp opened the far left shoulder on southbound 680, so they were letting one lane of traffic through. that was the case until they opened the freeway. they are not sure if the victim was struck by one or multiple cars. as we mentioned, one of the drivers did stop and was cooperating. the alameda county coroner said only that it was an adult male that was killed. they are not releasing more information. one of the things that investigators are gonna try to track down is to get some answers about why this man was on the freeway in the first place. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:32. a san lorenzo span in critical condition after being shot outside of a grocery store. sheriff's deputies say several men confronted the man several afternoon after he left the save right market. there was a fight. several shots were fired. no one else was hurt. a report in the "chronicle request is raising questions about the shooting of this man by police. it says that blueford's fingerprints were on the gun. now, there is a blog that says that statement is not accurate. 7. in just a few showers, san francisco police will answer questions about a recent police shooting that sparked protests. ktvu's alex savidge is in the city to tell us about a town hall meeting. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, good morning. hoping to ease tensions, chief greg sur will be holing a meeting -- holding a meeting. the chief will be providing more specifics about a police shooting that's sparked heated demonstrations. [ cheers ] >> reporter: after the nonfatal shooting on thursday, there were two demonstrations. protesters smashed windows on businesses, including banks, they even vandalized. protesters were angry about a police shooting where a plain clothes officer opened fire on a 22-year-old parolee on thursday night. police say that young man pointed a tech opinion 9 .9 gun. police say they have witnesses who can verify the account of what took place and during the community later on this morning, san francisco amischief are address -- will address those -- san francisco ac
