MSNBCW All In With Chris Hayes January 7, 2022

0 just the present we have to get through. >> wise words from our friend jean meacham, and prime minister churchill, to take us off there tonight. that is our broadcast, for this thursday night. with our thanks for being with us, in our gratitude that america remains tonight, a democracy, imperfect though it is. on behalf of all my colleagues, and the networks of nbc news, goodnight. t. tonight, on all in. one year ago today, in this sacred place, democracy was attacked. >> one year later, the president attempts to rally nation. >> i will stand in this breach, i will defend this nation. i will allow no one to places stagger at the throat of democracy. >> tonight, when history will record, a full year since donald trump's failed coup. a fight to stop the slow motion insurrection in the states, and what happens next, in a country where one of the two major political parties, is abandoning democracy. >> we are ashamed nothing. we're proud of the work that we've done on january 6th. >> special edition of all in, starts right now. good evening. i'm chris hayes. today january 6th, 2022. the one year anniversary of a violent mob storming the u.s. capital. a deadly insurrection aimed at disrupting the peaceful transfer of power, for really the first time this country's history. this day, january 6th, has taken on the sense of power and resonance in, the cultural imagination. wait a few days. do it's probably the most infamous date in this country's history, since september 11th. today, we saw on full display a battle over the meaning of the state. because, right now, we do not know where january 6th will mean, generations down the. line as you travel across the world, you can counter a lot of places named after dates, usually marking an occasion of a revolution, or a military victory, or a hard won battle for independence. that's the case of -- and cuba. both of which celebrator nations independence. we're 26th july street in downtown cairo, celebrating the revolution that overthrew the monarchy, in that country. years from now, we could see something similar, celebrating january 6th. there could be plazas dedicated to the insurrection. sounds preposterous now, but in the aftermath of the civil war, it probably sounded preposterous, there would be an avenue after -- in brooklyn new york. the generally avenue exists as such to this day. right, now at this very moment, there's a fight on how to signify with this day today, will mean in our country's collective memory. earlier today, president joe biden offered his vision of january 6th, as something of a historic inflection point. >> so now, let's step up, where the next chapter in american history. we're january 6th marks at the end of democracy, but the beginning of a renaissance of liberty and fair play. i did not seek this weight brought to this capitol one year ago today, but i will not shrink from it either. i will stand in this breach, i will defend this nation. i will allow no one to place dagger at the throat of democracy. >> now, a probably goes without saying, i believe that biden's position is a correct one. when you're ago, it appeared as the republicans appeared. republican leadership in both the house in the senate condemned the violence, even as a majority of house republicans then, after the violence, went into the chamber to vote against the cuckoo. -- but today, one year later, the response from congressional republicans has been overwhelmingly silent. exemplified, started, by this image. the only two republicans in the house chamber, today. on the lower right side of your screen, there you will see vice chair of the -- investigating insurrection. liz cheney of wyoming, and to write her father, of all people, former president, dick cheney. that is it. just two of them. the rest of the republican party, it seems, has yet to reach a consensus on how to frame the events of january 6th, except to agree that it wasn't all that bad. ron desantis says the unnecessary politicization of the senate. which of course, was, well an inherently political event perpetrated by one party, perpetrated by a loss. >> i think it's going to end up being a politicized, charlie foxtrot today. i don't expect anything good to come out of anything pelosi in the gang are doing. i don't expect anything from the corporate press to be enlightening. i think it's going to be nauseating, quite frankly. >> nauseating. fox news played would about -- with one anchor publicly speculating -- only pay tribute to the police officers who lost their lives and, not actually babbitt, the insurrectionist was killed by law enforcement, as she tried to force her way into a door, leading to the lobby of the house of the chamber. >> one went, the other went, and now it's done. when you later, january 6th, should recognize the police officers only, not the fifth person who was also killed that day. will move on. >> yeah, let's move. on republican pause -- was recently -- an assault on our democracy, and backed creating a bipartisan committee to investigate. it put out a statement today, that january 6th was the darkest day of my congressional career, and then said he still supporting donald trump, the man who incited this assault. >> president trump is the candidate that's representing the republican party, i will support him, because the republican party that i believe in, that would put him in that position, is the party that's going to see us into the future. >> and speaking of donald trump, the ex president, who fomented the insurrection, who watch it unfold, refusing to enter feed. indeed by some accounts watching with excitement, release the predictably unhinged eight men today, in his own bid to cast the memory and significance of the day,. lying about the results of the election, predictably, and endorsing the offense of the six, as unnecessary political uprising. which is been his position for a while. quote, to watch biden speaking is very hurtful to many people. they're the ones who tried to stop the peaceful council with the regulation. america is a laughing stock in the world, and it's all because of the real insurrection, which took place on november 3rd. never forget the crime of the 2020 presidential election. never give up. what do you think that means? would you think people hear when they hear that? where do you think he wants to do again? the position that the real insurrection was the democratic election which, the majority voted him out, that's a position that is shared by -- articulated, at least, by trump's most aberrant and antisocial followers, who are the vanguard of the maga movement. and the vanguard of the movement, to turn this day into a celebrity occasion. former -- who openly expresses admiration for the insurrection. some of whom beaten tased police officers, and said he would celebrate their actions. >> we are ashamed of nothing. we're proud of the work that we did on january six to make a legitimate argument about election integrity. we're going to make those arguments today, at a press conference at 2:15. we're going to walk the grounds that patriotic americans walked from the white house to the capitol, who had no intent of breaking the law, or doing violence. >> that is where the republican party will try to take this. mark my words. and the meaning of january 6th, depends on what comes next. it's just not set. history doesn't decide, it gets made. gates will not be the only one pushing ashamed of nothing lies. there is a contingent, a faction in american life, a minority affection, the but one -- that want to turn today into a holiday. on the cajun to celebrate. and they could win. if everyone who believes in american moxie, who believes in, as i do, the core vision of a multiracial, multi sectarian, self governing people across -- commanding our own faith, together, collectively, for ourselves. if all of those people, across those lines of difference, do not ban together, in the face of the people who refuse to be ashamed of their attack on that principle, when you're ago, then the recollection of this day, could look very different in the future. >> congressman jamie raskin, democrat from maryland, member of the house select committee to investigate january 6th. lead impeachment management -- he has a new and more, about the insurrection and his aftermath, titled unthinkable. he joins me now. >> congressman, what do you see as the importance of shaping the understanding of this day, one year after it happened? one year after you were there, with your daughter and son-in-law. >> it's everything. either people are going to understand that it's the expression of a fascist movement, that connects the highest reaches in the republican party. and donald trump, with violent, fascist extreme criminals. or they don't understand that. but, we are up against a serious right-wing authoritarian attack, on american political democracy. so, if we allow it to be swept under the rug, or trivialized, or minimized by people like matt gates, then we are in very certain danger of opening the road to right wing authoritarianism to take over american government. >> i thought this image, today, of dick cheney and liz cheney, in that chamber, where they're the only two republicans who show up for the commemoration, and moment of silence. i found that stark and worth 1000 words, and unnerving. >> for >> what do you see, when you see that? >> first of all, there were no republicans in the chamber at all. it was just completely empty, and avoid, not as usual just of ideas, but devoid of physical presence. that was chilling, it was a bit like a sci-fi movie. i was happy that liz, and her father came, because i've been trying to check out the history of coups around the world. in greece, argentina, chile, whatever. you can't find an example of an attempted coup, and serious fascist pushes in society, where progressives and liberal parties alone defeat fascism. you need a coalition of liberals and the center-right. liz cheney has a high burden of hope placed on her, as well as cam can sucker, and a handful of others who have stood strong. they represent the possibility that we will have a broad coalition of constitutional patriots in america, who are resisting with donald trump is trying to do. >> yeah, i should know that kinzinger -- i should be saying he wanted to be there, but could not. he would've been there if he could. this question of accountability, which haunts -- i think you have republicans basically en masse, not wanting to say anything. a few, like i said in the vanguard, who will celebrate, and will go on a podcast. but, there's also the question of, a year later, who has really paid a price for this? other than hundreds of hundreds of foot soldiers who have been arrested? >> that's an important point to. make there more than 700 prosecutions that are underway, which should give some comfort to people who are -- but it also should be very important message to donald trump's own followers. that he is perfectly happy to send in these footsoldiers to go in essentially ruined their lives, and put their families at risk, and get people injured and killed. he won't even come to our trial to defend his own conduct's. he wouldn't even come and testify or turn out anything over. he's a snowflake, and he's willing to get other people killed, and other people hurt, including the people who have fallen into his cult. but, he's not willing to stand up and defend his own conduct. it's really disgraceful. >> yeah, in fact, you will note that while money has been taken from donors to pay for the presidents legal defense, and a few people in his inner circle, that largeness has not -- who essentially answered his call to storm the capital, on that day, which goes your point. >> well, remember, he authorizes lawyers at the senate trial, when we press them on it, to denounce the violence. they said that they thought it was disgusting and sickening, and nobody would ever utter a positive word for the insurrectionists, on their side of the aisle. on their defense team, of course, trump now is saying that they greeted the police officers with hugs and kisses, and that it was basically like the second coming of mlk's warship washington. it's utterly fraudulent. donald trump refuses to take a stand. either he should denounce his lawyers, for denouncing the insurrection, or he should say that he's opposed to criminal violence. but, he won't say that, because as fascist political tendencies, like his, are always surrounded by violence. he has agreement from the beginning, the oath keepers, the three percenters, the proud boys, -- the militia groups, everybody who showed up that day, he has egged on their violence. >> your book is excellent, and i recommend it highly. i've read it, we had a conversation about it. you have suffered a tremendous personal loss in the death of your son, a year ago, and living through this day, and do remain a fairly hopeful person. what gives you hope as you stare down the barrel of this year, as you do the work on the january 6th select committee? because, i think there's a temptation to succumb to a kind of disparate doom watching just how malformed, how aberrant, our insidious the highest level of water to party has become. >> first of all, thank you for reading my book. that gives me some hope. that people are reading my book in a really serious way,. my dad used to say, when everything looks hopeless, you are the hope. we don't have time for despair. we don't have time for despondency, and fortunately. we've got to help people who are going through that, who have no other choice. but, we need everybody out here, engaging in democracy, this year. we need everybody. that's why -- i look also to the past, i look to frederick douglass, who is a great marylander. he said power concedes nothing without demand, it never has, never. will i look to abraham linking, who are quoted on january six, the year ago. who said, if do men downfall ever come to america, it will not come from monsters abroad, it will come from the monsters within. by that, he meant, my violent white supremacy. and vigilante violence. he talked about a mob attack on a newspaper editor, mr. love joy, who was killed, an abolitionist who, is killed by a racist mob. we have to finally look at, most importantly, chris, to the future. to the young people, because this generation of young americans, they are beyond everything that donald trump wants to pump into the blood of america. they are beyond the poisons of racism and antisemitism, and massage in erie, they're beyond that. we just have to galvanize the young people to get engaged, which is why my whole campaign has been turned over to democracy. a project somber -- to get young people involved into girly, and passionately in this election year. we need all hands on deck. the democratic party today is, the no rusty party. fdr used to call us the -- that's really who we are this. point >> all right, congressman jamie raskin. the, unthinkable, is out now. we talked about it at length on my podcast, why is this happening. figure also that mess nbc films documentary 11 constitution, which is premiering here february 6th. thanks so much for time. >> thank you so much for having me, chris. >> our coverage of what happened a year ago is never truly ended. we covered every single night. the ongoing assault on the moxie. but, it could be easily to forget the violence that unfolded before our very eyes. -- firsthand accounts of who survived it, as they honor those who did not. >> had those officers not held that line, i would not admit my some, cameron. for me, january 6th, i don't see it is a member of congress so much. i see it is a father. as somebody who, because they didn't know would, have always been committed to making sure my boys knew me. to the sicknick family, also to you, your son sacrifice, allowed me to me mine. d me to me mine.
