>> memorial day means celebrating those who sacrificed. myself, i'm in the army the we celebrate this memorial day for fallen heroes and those who were inec war. >> wear wouldn't have freedom ad rights it weren't people fought for us, from first world war to the second. my dad was in korea. you know what? we're only country that fought and provided freedom for others around the world. >> you know, so many people, they look towards this day and they think about the fireworks at night and sometimes the true meaning gets lost but you know, think about where we were a couple hundred years ago. we were someplace else. we looked to the united states as beacon of freedom and people came here from all over. they still do.o. if you go to any country in the world and you ask where would you like to go some day, they always say the united states of america. why? because i want to be free. because it is a land of opportunity.

that the only way for me to survive was to get out and come to america. when we all got reunited and i became a young man. i started my university training and was s planning to become a doctor, there was not a day that went buy where my father would not remind me of how happy he was that he lived in the u.s. and look at you, my son, he would say. look at what you have become. this is america. what more do you want? andri for me and for millions of other people it is the same thing. look of what we have. look at what we have achieved. we're blessed by god. and therefore we should be celebrating all the time because there is no place like this country, no place. >> on this 4th of july we want to talk about america and what makes it so great and i can't think of anyone better to start
a story that you come from nothing and make it into something and something big. >> on this july 4th weekend what makes america great is opportunity. our country gives the most people the best chance to prosper. that's what makes great. because in other countries around the world there are class systems, there are government oppression, things in play. but here, if you work hard, if you're honest, if you get educated, you have a real shot at it. a lot of luck is involved but just keep working and persevering. this is why i love america. i came from very little to be here tonight, to talk about the 4th of july. freedom isn'tri free. individual responsibility will make the difference but america is the greatest country in the world because of opportunity. >> in spite of all of our difficulties that we have had, this country has come extremely long way towards true freedoms and equality for everyone.

businesses to have unequaled opportunity in the world. >> well that is really what america represents. my grandfather, carmine, came to this country in 1919. you can imagine what he was feeling. what your ancestors was feeling leaving a place so familiar with friend and family. because ofie the promise of opportunity. because of the promise of freedom and opportunity. when youou look at america and u think aboutme it, what has amera given to you? >> it gave me the opportunity to never give up. the road is not smooth. the journey is not equal. the situations have to be overcome. and you don't succeed in every step of the way. but in this country, you learn from what you need to learn, by that bumpy road and you never give up, taking advantage of the opportunity america permits you. >> i think as immigrants we
