Two Independent AI Investigations Claim to Identify QAnon's 'Q'

In October 2017, a post appeared on the 4chan message board from an anonymous account calling itself “Q Clearance Patriot.” This poster, who became known as “Q,” claimed to be a high-ranking government insider with access to classified information from President Trump’s administration, about an alleged global cabal against Trump. Since then, despite many postings,

How QAnon Is Seeping Into Michigan GOP Politics

Many anti-lockdown and pro-Trump rallies featured QAnon signs and slogans like this popular one about accused child trafficker Jeffrey Epstein at a conservative protest at the Capitol against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, April 30, 2020 | Anna Liz Nichols (Michigan Advance)
QAnon has found a home in Michigan.
The right-wing conspiracy theory — which is rooted in anti-Semitic tropes and revolves around former President Donald Trump hunting down and eventually killing Democratic politicians and wealthy liberals who lead double lives as Satan-worshipping cannibals running a child sex trafficking ring — is increasingly spreading from the fringes of the internet to conservative spaces across the state, political leaders and academics say.

The Texas GOP drew attention over the weekend for using its slogan, "We are the storm," on publicity materials and its Twitter account, which critics say links the party to QAnon.
"The Storm" is a phrase widely visible within the QAnon movement, a web of baseless conspiracy theories that claim a group of Satan-worshipping pedophiles run the world and were plotting against former President Donald Trump. Origins of the movement are linked to an anonymous 4chan account calling itself "Q Clearance Patriot," who claimed "The Storm" was when Trump would expose those plotting against him. Many believed Inauguration Day would start "The Storm."

GENEVA (AFP) — The mysterious “Q” behind the QAnon conspiracy movement, which was instrumental in the storming of the US Capitol, is in fact two people, according to Swiss experts.
Swiss startup OrphAnalytics said it had used its algorithm-based machine-learning text analysis software, developed to detect plagiarism, to help crack the mystery behind QAnon.
“There are clearly two styles characterizing the QAnon messages,” company chief Claude Alain Roten told AFP in an interview at his home in western Switzerland.

What is QAnon, the Trump-supporting conspiracy movement?

AFP explains the origins and beliefs of what was once a fringe Internet phenomenon:
In 2016, a false theory spread on the Internet, which eventually became known as “Pizzagate,” alleging that top Democrats ran a child sex-trafficking ring from a pizzeria in Washington DC.
It appeared to have been sparked by innocuous messages published by WikiLeaks recounting a Hillary Clinton fundraiser, and culminated in a man firing a gun in the restaurant in December 2016.
QAnon began in late 2017 with posts on the anonymous messaging board 4chan and a similar site, 8kun, by a user named “Q Clearance Patriot,” who claimed to be an American intelligence official with access to classified information.

Many of them were unhappy to be the focus of media attention.
The core of QAnon consists of about 200 identifiable people who are responsible for creating, publicizing, and enabling the QAnon movement, an investigation by Insider has found.
QAnon followers believe in multiple fictitious conspiracy theories around the idea that the world is controlled by a satanic cabal of child-abusing wealthy liberals. They obsessively deconstruct the internet posts of the anonymous "Q Clearance Patriot," who claims to be a US national-security insider.
They are gaining influence within the Republican party. President Trump has tweeted pro-Q messages more than 200 times. And dozens of GOP candidates used Q propaganda during their campaigns, Insider's research found.
