The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer

going to be happy with the outcome of that investigation. it had been going on for five years, with the full resources of the justice department and a trump appointed u.s. attorney. he's pleading guilty to two relatively minor tax charges, and will have a gun charge diverted. publicans are not fully satisfied with that. so, of course, there have been a lot of attacks on the justice department, and there he is, you know, trying to blunt the accusations of a whistleblower who argues that, look, there was some political meddling in this investigation. but this, i mean, almost every time you see merrick garland, you get asked some question about the impartiality of the justice department. >> not fully satisfied, to say the least. laura, we only have a couple moments left, but i want to ask you about another of the charges from the whistleblowers. that's the irs recommended more felony charges against hunter biden. in your experience, do the charges that he's pleading guilty to fit the crimes that he is alleged with committed? >> well, it's really a matter of the paperwork. did he file or did he not? the fact that he would have eventually paid the taxes that he was supposed to have paid, does not absolve him of criminal liability if, in fact, that was required of him? the fact that there have been charges that have been leveled

philadelphia was the site of his head campaign headquarters in 2020. but with republicans continuing to up the ante on their far-right rhetoric particularly around trump's rhetoric. is biden playing it to save here? is he going to break through the current noise and chaos? >> ayman, two. thoughts, yeah, i think biden's doing exactly what he's gotta do. focus on pocketbook issues. again, think about where publicans are going to be doing a next 16 to 17 months. talking about trump and his crimes, trump and his trials. then you've got desantis, and all the other republican candidates out there talking about all of these culture war issues. biden needs to stay focused on the economic stuff. the other message, ayman, is look, to democrats and everybody else out there, quit complaining, and quit whining about joe biden. quit saying that joe biden is too old, or he doesn't inspire you. the republican party, my former political party, is trying to end our democracy.

me. joe, i want to start with biden's speech today. it was a tried and true biden strategy. he was speaking in philadelphia, strong labor union base. he was in his home state. philadelphia was the site of his head campaign headquarters in 2020. but with republicans continuing to up the ante on their far-right rhetoric particularly around trump's rhetoric. is biden playing it too safe here? is he going to break through the current noise and chaos? >> ayman, two. thoughts, yeah, i think biden's doing exactly what he's gotta do. focus on pocketbook issues. again, think about where publicans are going to be doing a next 16 to 17 months. talking about trump and his crimes, trump and his trials. then you've got desantis, and all the other republican candidates out there talking about all of these culture war issues. biden needs to stay focused on the economic stuff. the other message, ayman, is look, to democrats and everybody else out there, quit complaining, and quit whining about joe biden. quit saying that joe biden is too old, or he doesn't inspire

American Voices With Alicia Menendez

americans? >> alicia, i have to agree with david. i think that we are facing one of the most dangerous times for our national security and democracy in the united states. look, let's remember that it's been donald trump and his loyal followers and the maga republicans who started weaponizing the judicial system and the department of justice when the mueller report came out, and immediately, bill barr came in front of the cameras to try to control the narrative. despite misinformation. as i have been looking at everything that is going on and watching all the tweets from all the tougher publicans here in florida, rick scott, desantis, marco rubio, it's really a war on information at this point. they are trying to control the narrative to try to mislead their base. and it's extremely dangerous. what they're doing right now is to use that misinformation to divide, further divide, chip away at the faith on what enforcement and the judicial

this is not good news for donald trump. i think they could spin it as something that could help them to rally the republican primary. at the end of the day, at the very least, if he becomes the nominee, he can be facing charges where he has to appear in court. one of the significant things about this case is that we do not actually know the scope of the evidence that is here. the nature of the charges he might face. there is a reason that the trump team believes that this could be very significant. there is an opening of eyes around my publicans. an opening where some of them want to see what the charges are. they want to see that they are significant and negative and have to do with national security, that is a real problem for him.
