you know, five or ten deep. here's a layer of people who are socialists and they're really worked up about workers' rights issues. here's a layer of clergy and they're actively praying for people as they go down the street. here's a layer of soccer moms with their kids. here's a layer of marching band trying to make this feel like a pep rally, a positive, uplifting thing. so a lot of different viewpoints being expressed out here, but by and large, at least sort of back here a little bit away from the commons area itself, very much a positive feeling. >> all right, garrett haake, we'll see you again no doubt. thank you so much for that. joining me from boston, rchb reverend eugene rivers. reverend rivers was joining us on the phone as he was making his way safely to the studio. glad you got there and on time, sir, thank you so much. >> thank you, alex. >> your thoughts about what is occurring in your city today. what do you think when you first hear about it? >> well, actually i want to salute the leadership of the city.

>> joining us now, reverend rivers, vice president of religious affairs and external relations, and ladoris kordell, independent police auder for the city of san jose. can we begin by agreeing the city has done the right thing for extending that health insurance to a woman that's eight months pregnant this >> i would agree. >> in addition to that the body cameras, another item we haven't mentioned. every officer there is now going to have a body camera. i don't think they were prior to that video, but now they are. >> there's a senator in south carolina who has been pushing a bill to get body cameras all over the state. and the bill was going nowhere. but he did get a grant for north charleston to get 100 cameras, and they were ordered. they decided after the video, after this that everyone needed a body camera which is what was

i live in north charleston. they did another thing we were about to ask them to do which is we've been trying to get on track about this issue of cameras in south carolina. no movement no movement. boom, all the sudden we have video proof that this guy may have gotten off but clearly did not tell the truth. without the video, his narrative about who walter scott was would have held fast until it was challenged by the family members and others. the truth is what i saw when i went to the vigil could not have been possible based on what the officers said. too much was going on. clearly he was chased. i'm so glad the video came out because we had a public execution that we know did happen at the hands of police. and he should have been fired. he should have been charged. both things happened. the city did the right thing, both the mayor and the police chief. >> still a lot of questions for the mayor and police chief. reverend rivers thank you very much. we go back to breaking news out of boston as we've just gotten word the verdict is in for dzhokhar tsarnaev and the trial that's lasted in boston now

to go over. as adam points out, we should know coming up in roughly about 18 minutes that the verdict is in. again, the jury is back. we'll know what their verdict is in the dzhokhar tsarnaev trial coming up in about 14 minutes from now. i want to two back to our conversation as we've been following this breaking coverage out of south carolina as well where the mayor and the police chief have just given their statements about the death over the weekend of 50-year-old walter scott and the ensuing charge and arrest for murder of the 33-year-old police officer involved in this shooting. the big question for many people looking at this is whether or not this officer would have been charged if there wasn't video capturing the incident that led to the arrest of the officer. the charging document and the incident report that we have reverend rivers, is not factual when we look at that video. you said you were meeting a week ago today about transparency. is this the proof that you need the incident report to help

while. it was rare that a police officer is charged with murder. then for the mayor and police chief to come out and embrace their family in this manner that to me is almost as shocking as everything else. getting ahead of the story. this is somewhat of a ferguson effect. all the lessons learned. now they're getting ahead of it. they're paying for the police officer's wife's insurance. the body camera situation. there's a lot happening here. i think they're trying to get ahead of the curve before anything spirals out of control. >> so stand by for me. we want to introduce the bing pulse question that we have for our audience today of whether or not you think that the police officer would have been charged if we hadn't seen the video. you can log on to our website pulse.msnbc.com. cast your votes there. i want to talk to reverend rivers. you had the opportunity a week ago today to meet with police chief driggers. this is obviously a sad incident that happened on the weekend
