it was light hearted. it was broad. the republicans all night long, even sarah huckabee, were negative and divisive. i think it helped joe biden a lot. >> can i say on sarah sanders, it's indicative of the echo chamber we live in. the right wing was praising her. this is the future star of the party. people loved it in the base of the republican party. i don't know that it was -- it would be as well received with independents, with moderates and just the mainstream of the country. it goes to show how differently the two sides of our country see things. >> yeah. they were basically -- it was as if you were talking about two different countries. what biden was saying was a speech that was different than what sanders was responding to in hers. woke, all of these buzzwords. they were very, very different visions of america, which is what we have seen over the last seven years. >> senator romney and congressman santos had an exchange at state of the union. he told santos he doesn't belong

mainstream of the country. it just goes to show how differently the two sides of our country see things. >> they were basically, it was if you are talking about two different countries. what biden was saying was a speech that was very different than what sanders was responding to in harm's. will, sort of all of these buzzwords. but they were very different visions of america which is what we've seen consistently over the last several years. >> senator romney obviously, george santos had an exchange of the state of the union. told santos that he doesn't belong in congress. that he should be looking around the aisle trying to shake hands of the president. service actually be sitting in the back of the room and staying quiet. santos responded today. i just want to play what he said. >> it's not the first time in history that i've been told to shut up and go to the back of the room. especially by people who come from a privileged background. and it is not going to be the last. and i'm never going to shut up and go to the back of the room. i think it's reprehensible that the senator would say such a thing today.

criminals in their tracks with real prison time for repeat offenders and a workable death penalty. we must send a message to our young people that crime doesn't pay. >> governor whitman using her power in speaking there before an assembled group. do we have any indications of what sanders would do tonight and why is that tool not used more often? >> well, that was probably the best republican state of the union response i can remember. and what it was, it was basically she was able to match the am biance on some level of the state of the union by addressing state legislature. in addition, whitman was pro-choice. she was pro guy rights. pro environment. she was specifically picked to appeal to the soccer moms, the southern women voters who had grown very weary of the newt gingrich gop and gotten scared. so they picked her specifically for that. what has happened now is the opposite thinking has come into

larger issue of abortion which becomes a larger issue of health care. so it is the presentation of abortion is different how democrats want to talk about it. democrats wanted this to be more of a wholistic, national argument, but it has been state by state and it's largely been the media talking about some of the more extreme examples of what happened to women over the course of the last several months. what sanders is talking about is where the bulk of the national party wants to be, and that's not what you're seeing. >> it's striking when you look at this data about ads and the messages that different candidates are using, republicans almost in every case, number one and two, they're talking about the economy and the ads, with a lot of democrats, it's not even in the top five of the most common issues they're talking about. and that, according to strategists of both parties is a problem for democrats. they are running away from the economy in many cases when they should be taking it head on.

wanted his friend bernie sanders to back the president. >> the critical words at the end of what sanders just said, before are -- there should not be a vote before there is a bill to see. that is a message to house progressives to defy, to defy the speaker, to defy what the president and his team would like to see happen today in the immediate term and get nag infrastructure bill passed, and that's a significant move given that this is the second time the president's gone up to the hill to -- to get house democrats behind him, so if yet again like the first time he emerges and they are not there yet, it sort of raises a question about what is the president's juice inside of this party, but also, john, you mentioned how the president made sort of the political case inside the room to the house democrats. he then went and made the case to the country that this is a moment where as a country we need to decide if we're going to have the world pass us by
