Assault weapon. rachel, how is that different from what o rourke said? yeah, look. i mean, there s really not, right, a huge difference there. i can tell you there is concern about these sort of calls about confiscating weapons privately amongst a lot of democrats. for beto, on thursday night, that was a break out moment. a lot of people thought he was going to be doing better in this 2020 race and he really hasn t gained the traction folks thought he would. you saw the passion and the fire and the reason he gave ted cruz a serious race in texas and it was a good moment for him. yes, i cover capitol hill. i will tell you on the hill with the democrats they are focused completely on background checks and the reason they do that is because 90% of americans including republicans support the idea of universal background checks. that is the one area where gun control advocates actually think they can move the ball. they think republicans are starting to feel the pressure. trump said he wanted to do them and then backed away because of obviously the nra. but look. this is a really controversial
Sounding proposals, things like universal background checks that, are more broadly popular in the country. this makes it more difficult for them to say that that s where the party is. there are people like o rourke who are really going to push this issue, and they re going to have to figure out whether they re going to join them or distance themselves. it did seem that that remark caught a lot of people off guard. but i want to play what joe biden said about assault weapons last month, right here on cnn. so to gun owners out there who say, well, a biden administration means they re going to come for my guns. bingo, you re right if you have an assault weapon. the fact of the matter is they should be illegal, period. so olivia, how is that different from what o rourke said this week? well, i think the difference is the venue. o rourke said it in a very powerful way at a debate that took place in his home state where there was just a mass shooting that really, you know, caught the attention of the entire country and seemed to
That out of the norm. and if you look at what democrats said, 74% of democrats are in favor of a buyback process and 49% of independents. we look at assault weapons. you know, it s only been 15 years that americans have been able to purchase assault weapons since the 2004 ban ended. and assault weapons are only 3% of all rifles that americans own. what he s saying it s not that radical or that crazy, and it was going to rile up the democratic base. you hear the crowd erupting when he said this. of course, the republicans are going to play this over and over again. and they re going to try to rile up their base. but what o rourke has been saying there are more americans than not that are actually in favor of gun control. and that the u.s. congressmen need to stop being afraid of the nra. so, in this regard, i would disagree with what chris coons is saying. i think think what o rourke is saying is getting the base

Shootings a year. no other country comes close. so, yes, this is [ bleep ] up. what o rourke is talking about is something i have had to say too many times on this show. the odds haven t changed. i talked about those odds just hours after the deadly mass shooting at marjory stoneman douglas high school last year. every single one of us is just playing the odds at this point the odds that in a country of 325 million souls, that we won t be the ones who get hit by the next bullets that start flying. we won t be the one that gets that phone call about someone you love who did. your son, your daughter, your brother, your sister, your spouse, or your parent, even a friend, anyone you know. the phone call that changes your life. but with every deadly shooting in this country, the odds get worse and worse and worse. are you really willing to keep
