Syria's decade of despair as conflict churns on Posted : 2021-03-11 16:13 By John J. Metzler A decade ago, winds of change and calamity blew across the Middle East. From Tunisia to Egypt, Syria, and later Libya, entrenched autocracies were challenged politically by what became known as the Arab Spring, a series of popular and quasi-democratic uprisings which shook the status quo and smashed the old order. Sadly the Arab Spring soon evolved into the Arab Winter as most of the countries with the exception of Tunisia, saw these popular uprisings hijacked by hardline Islamic fundamentalists and a motley gaggle of militant terrorist groups.
the fiber of the community is destroyed. out of one and a half million that are barely 200,000 left today, really is not just about spillingoc blood, it is really destroying our community, our history. history is thousands of years old before christianity. and today we are really left to fend for ourselves. very little help is starting to come from the u.s. in the world is, frankly, has turned a blind eye. if the church as well as other governments. which is really sad to see. >> tucker: it's shocking. finally, i have to ask about syria. the assad family, whatever you think of the assad family presided over a country in which christians had space to worship killed. not what's the situation now for christians in the country? >> in just a few years ago, out of 1.7 million we are down -- the christians in syria are down to 450,000. there are really -- really the syrian community, some are

>> reporter: we've all been watching and indeed the kremlin has been watching the g-7 meeting which rex tillerson has left for signs of a united front from the west and signs of clarity from washington about what its next step in syria will be. clearly rex tillerson will be arriving here with a clear message and that message to russia is drop president assad. assad is toxic. just a short time before he left, rex tillerson said the days of the assad family's rule in syria are numbered. he said a few other interesting things just before he left. let's take a listen to rex tillerson. >> i hope that what the russian government concludes is that they have aligned themselves with an unreliable partner in bashar al assad. assad has made the russians look not so good under these
