Happening in those states. reporter: sources telling abc news pence did call the governor but did not follow trump s orders. over in new hampshire politics is a sport in new hampshire, if you don t do well in new hampshire, you re in trouble. reporter: perry johnson, senator tim scott, and florida governor ron desantis among the candidates appealing to voters. freedom has been under assault in this country, and we need people to stand up and fight back, and that s exactly what we re doing here. [ cheers and applause ] reporter: and at the white house, president biden and the first lady celebrating independence day with a barbecue, honoring active duty military and their families. democracy is never, never, never guaranteed. every generation must fight to maintain it. reporter: biden trying to turn the page after a series of defeats handed down by the conservative majority supreme court last week. linsey, missing from the campaign trail this holiday, former president trump. his campaign, though, blasting those arizona election allegations, calling them a witch hunt and saying that he did nothing wrong.
i think what s really revealing is that there s no evidence that this web designer was ever even approached by a same-sex couple looking for service supporting their wedding. reporter: democrats also critical of the court striking down biden s student debt relief plan. i m fortunate now and been able to pay them off, but this is a real hardship. reporter: former vice president mike pence says biden s student loan plan would ve mostly benefited people with multiple graduate degrees. so you re going to say to working americans, to truck drivers, to people working in the trades, we re going to take your taxes and pay down a part of the student debt of doctors and lawyers and ph.d.s. alex presha joins us now live from the supreme court. alex, with this term now wrapped up, what more is our abc news poll telling us about how americans view the court? reporter: rachel, that poll shows an increasing number of americans view the supreme court as political.
Revealing how americans feel about those decisions and the court itself. here s abc s alex presha. reporter: tonight, republicans taking a victory lap after a week of repeated blows to the biden administration handed down by the conservative majority supreme court. this was a fantastic win for individual liberty and freedom. reporter: presidential candidate nikki haley praising the court s decision to strike down affirmative action in college admissions, a decision 52% of americans approve of, according to our new abc news poll. democrats predicting university systems will adapt despite the ruling. what the universities are going to do in reaction to this is they re going to look at other ways to provide diversity into their student body. this is not over yet. reporter: as for the court s decision to allow a creative business to refuse to serve lgbtq customers, 43% of americans approve. as a lawyer and someone who s watched this for a long time, i think justice gorsuch made a decision that protects all of our first amendment rights. reporter: but the biden administration today questioning the merit of the case.
reporter: trump also taking credit for the conservative majority supreme court after this week s major ruling striking down affirmative action, president biden s student debt relief plan, and limiting lgbtq rights. we appointed nearly 300 federal judges and 3 great supreme court justices. [ cheers and applause ] reporter: voters here saying trump delivered what they wanted. he did what we wanted him to do. he campaigned on bringing in conservative judges who would be constitutionalists, not politicians. reporter: rachel, tonight the former president is fund-raising off these supreme court decisions, and next week we expect him to take that same messaging on the road back to iowa set to hold a rally in council bluffs, rachel. a defiant donald trump on the campaign trail, alex, thank you. and tune in to this week tomorrow when jonathan karl speaks with former vice president mike pence about those recent supreme court decisions. now to a couple speaking out after a mom falsely accused them of trying to kidnap her children.
Security, about issues around gun violence. these are the issues that people have to get involved with, because our democracy only works when the people demand that it works. now, one last question. in the events of these supreme court decisions, california s legislature is now set to take up recommendations from the states first in the nation task force on reparations. that task force turns in its final report to the state assembly thursday. it included a model for cash payments and laid out who would be eligible. it s also included policy recommendations such as a formal state apology for disenfranchising black residents, and a repeal of the states affirmative action ban. while this is happening in the country s most populous state, there s been a renewed push by some house democrats to take up the issue in congress. if democrats retake the house
