the damage, already done in alabama as the fast-moving storms knock down trees. hail, a concern in many states, already coming down in mississippi. and there's the potential for even more damage and destruction as the south braces for another round of severe weather overnight. lester? >> kathy park, thanks. bill cairnes joins me now. how bad is the lingering threat looking like tonight? >> we're halfway through the severe weather outbreak, already 100,000 people without power and we had a report of a five-inch hailstone in mississippi. that could tie the stated record. that's a softball falling from the sky. so, severe weather threat goes from dallas all the way to savannah. we're going to have isolated tornados through the night and a lot of possibilities of wind damage. that will be the biggest concern. these are the areas of greatest concern, mississippi, alabama, areas of georgia, and dropping down towards the gulf coast later on this evening, but later tonight, dallas and little rock, you're going to have isolated storms right through your evening. as far as air quality, the smoke is back. this is the worst ever air quality measured

to the basement during a tornado warning. meteorologist derek van dam has more on the weather thursday and what's in store for the u.s. today. >> they say everything is bigger in texas. that includes the size of the hail that falls from the sky. get a load of this comparison picture. this is coming out of the dallas-ft. worth region. that's a clementine. that's a three-inch hailstone. these are the reports from the national weather service. really impressive hailstones from ft. worth to weatherford and mineral wells. there's 12 reports of wind damage. 49 reports of damage in particular. but the weather service highlights some of the large every hailstones that were reported. two inches or larger in diameter. there's nine reports of that and
the hospital with respiratory issues, as well. heat and drought, of course, related issues. the fires were so intense that they created their own thunderstorms. that's called pyrocouumulonimbu clouds, that has become a factor that has become an issue in the past decade. who could forget the ice storm in texas that put 10,000 customers in the dark from austin to houston to san antonio. it also disrupted the water and natural gas availability across the state. staying in texas, this is incredible, a super cell thunderstorm created a hailstone over 19 inches in diameter. we would be remiss to forget what happened in the middle of december of january -- or of december 2021. we had, on average, 23 tornadoes in the u.s. states, but we had over 116 just in the course of that month. during the middle of the month, we had our long-track tornados barrel through portions of arkansas, missouri, kentucky, and into tennessee and we can't forget about what happened to
