Delaware, thank you so much. let s discuss student loan forgiveness with cnn political commentator and spectrum news political commentator errol louis. good morning, bright and early. i want to talk about something else that we saw after the white house announced this plan. they went on twitter and called on republicans who criticized the idea but they themselves received forgiveness to federal loans during the covid pandemic. i haven t seen democrats go after republicans so aggressively. what did you make of it? good morning, boris, it was hard bawl. and they pointed out members of congress who not only took out loans during the forgiveness and had the loans forgiven. they put the exact dollar amounts in. some cases hundreds of thousands of dollars, one or two cases over a million dollars and points out the absolute lip pock crazy from this.
There are lots of americans who get help from the federal government for lots of different reasons. you can t unravel an entire nation saying why you should get something, why should your disaster relief come through when i didn t get any money because i didn t is have a disaster in my region of the country. it doesn t make sense the white house said they re not going to be pushed around on this and call out the hypocrisy of republicans who are just complaining. it wasn t just republicans who were critical of this move. tim ryan, a democrat running for senate in ohio, like several other democrats running in battleground races said, quote, it sends the wrong message to millions of ohioans without a degree working just as hard to make ends meet. how do you weigh that pushback coming from within biden s own party? well, there has to be a bit of a fact-check here. first of all, something like a third of the people who go into student debt never get a degree.

Industry to deliver the energy needs that the world needs. i think they think that because of this. let s look at this sound bite from the debate back during the presidential race. number 1, no more subsidies for the fossil fuel industry. no more drilling on federal lands. no more drilling offshore. no ability for the oil industry to continue to drill, period, end. martha: that message was clear. seems like they have done what they can, jared. if you go back to the clip that you played from the president speaking today, not during the campaign, but today, he said two things. he said yes, elevated profits, no question. look. this is a time, we re a nation that is support ago war that is a bipartisan support putting great pressure on energy prices. republicans and democrats alike have to recognize that part of supporting ukraine is recognizing that that is going to lead to elevated gas prices.
i think that war against the industry certainly doesn t reflect the fact that he s continues continue to benefit from all kinds of preferential subsidies. they continue to get them. we also, by the way, helped our petroleum company, both oil and refineries to the tune of something like $5 billion during the fiscal support during the pandemic. so we have given them very deep support. now we re asking them to step up and give a little something back. not to be unprofitable. we recognize that. they had tough years there. go ahead and maybe thin those profits, the really quite high profit margins out a bit so you can give americans a break during a period that we re trying to help in a bipartisan manner. republicans and democrats together help support the ukraine effort. martha: americans have made it clear. they need a waiver of the jones
if you re a parent and you saw what happened, especially when you entrust those to serve and protect us, to do something about it, a lot of people were upset. they want someone to stop the pain, the bleeding, what is happening in our schools today. i don t think this poll is indicative of what will happen in that race. just, for example, a lot of uvalde parents and a lot of community members were very i was on the ground when this happened. they were upset when beto decided to do that. it wasn t just republicans. it s a democrat town, to be clear. so they weren t excited about this as well. i think beto has taken a moment and trying to make this more of a national story for him, that he s the one that is rallying the troops for the kids. i think when you look at all of the issues facing america, especially texans, this is not the issue. he s a media guy.
