administration officials at the white house who are like what do we do now? this is unbelievable. what are you going to be dealing with, and how do you move this ball forward so the united states has a sense that there's stability there? >> exactly. i mean, there's a whole other discussion to be had about whether a lot of analysts and experts are saying the u.s. focuses too much on central government, making sure these countries have a good stable government. that hasn't worked out well in afghanistan and iraq. maybe we should look more at grass roots institutions, governance rather than government. it's a thought. >> there's a lot going on. >> it is. it's been buzzing the whole time. >> mine too. thank you, michael. an online shoe company is seeing big profits during this tough time. our tom forman reports it may be because employees get to have a whole lot of fun. >> 24/7, two by two, zappos.com is moving shoes. more than $1 billion annually in internet sales, fueled by a wide selection, free shipping, and money back guarantees. >> thank you for calling

that mubarak is not a dictator. in my use of the word that's probably correct. however, he is an autocrat. a strong-armed leader and stifled dissent and not allowed democracy to gradually increase. you would thought he would have allowed more each year and election cycle and the presidential cycle. but the last race he had nominal opposition candidate run against him but the parliamentary election this fall were suppressed. i think in the last few years, we have probably gone too far tolerating him. it's time to reassess. this is not a partisan issue. as you say it's been a 30-year american policy but it may be a moment to reassess. >> shannon: michael, fascinating to have your insight. thank you. >> thank you. >> shannon: the white house is planning to give a special delivery to congress this valentine's day. not flowers or chocolate. it's the president's 2012 fiscal year budget. he is calling for five-year non-security discretionary spending freeze. the goal, of course, is to lower the budget deficit by $400 billion. the non-partisan congressional

he's been out and about. we sort of ascertained at 10:00, 11:00 things have quieted down. you've been out and b.interested in what feedback you've been getting on people from the ground about the legs of this movement, that they are going to be back to recall. are they going to be back the next day? >> well, that's exactly what they were telling me, michael. really amazing to see because we were out and about at the times when all of this was going down, when people were getting tear gassed and beat up. we were on the front lines with them and they said they are not going to back down. now is the time for them to see this through. interesting to see that a lot of them felt that this was the first time that they really thought the egyptian security forces were not invincible, that there was really something changing here on the ground, and that, of course, if you will, got even more boost with the military movement and then all of a sudden the police disappeared. you heard from ben before that the headquarters of the national party was on fire.

people who are very, very young who are participating in these demonstrations, who are very well-educated, who have a lot of knowledge politically, who will tell you a lot of things about world politics, how all of this plays into world politics, how important egypt is in politics in this region and in world politics, and these are the people who are going on the street and who are -- who were, for the better part of the day, fighting it out with the police forces and then, of course, sort of making up with the military when they rolled at least into our part of town right here, michael. >> and as you say and as tim was discussing with me earlier, too, this is now a section of the community in egypt who no longer fear a security apparatus that kept them under the thumb for so many years. fred pleitgen, thanks so much. been talking to ben wedeman, one of our other correspondents on the ground there. we'll get the back story from ben wedeman, from the show i host on cnn international, which isn't running today because of these developments, but we'll give you ben's back story anyways. stick around.

but they did say they wanted fundamental change. people were telling me again and again that, as you said, there are no jobs. it's very difficult to find employment. many of them were also speaking of social injustice. one man told me all we want is a little bit of love. there were, of course, other people who were very adamant about the fact that president mubarak must step down, that they felt that there was a fundamental change that had to happen and it had to happen right now, and they were very vocal about this as well. certainly it is those fundamental problems that you saw in places like tunisia as well, a lack of opportunity, a lack of social opportunity, a lack of social freedom, of course. this is a very repressive police state, and people are just telling me they are absolutely fed up with their situation because they also just feel that they are way behind their possibilities, way behind what they could be, and they feel that now is the time where they have to go and fight for this. and the other thing that we've been talking about so much, michael, is we've been saying so many people come from all walks of life here, but it's really interesting to see the amount of

protesters. mubarak has kept the peace for about 20 years. i think they're going to get into a thorny issue if, in fact, what with richard recorded that the muslim brotherhood is involved. they were prominent islamic society several decades ago. they've evolved through a broader role in society. >> michael, i think i hear you there. let me get your thoughts really quickly. >> i'm concerned about richard's report and the potential for the islamiczation of this. it seems like it may extend far beyond egypt. and more importantly is that peace treaty with israel. whoever replaces mubarak, are they going to be as willing to deal with israel as we've seen so far? that was the chief issue. >> and that's a question that secretary cohen raised, if it's
