today in syria where we have no authority under international law to be. it's what we have been doing. so this hypocrisy appalls me. at the same time, i admit we have a situation today that we need to do something about, but what we need to do about it is have patience. strategic patience. if putin bites off more than he can chew, he's finished. if he stops where he is, we can live with that. and we can get back to the issues that really matter, like nuclear weapons. >> colonel wilkerson and p.j. crowley, multiple perspectives here, and more informed for it. >> we're going to fit in a break here. our coverage continues as we look at sobering warnings and how americans are impacted. stay with us. stay with us you could save on your auto insurance. with high level government experience here, former assistant secretary of spate, p.j. crowley, and colonel larry wilkerson. welcome to both of you. colonel wilkerson, your thoughts on what we are hearing from a somewhat united front from leaders in washington. >> i think it was voltaire who said that hypocrisy is a tribute virtue placed to vice. i gotta say that i have heard so much hypocrisy over the last couple months, couple of years, that it's appalling. the fact it's unified in the congress makes it almost laughable. that said, this situation in military terms is really as was warned, a transient event and we should be aware of focusing on. i don't mean there aren't some horrible things happening, but ukraine is not a threat.

corridor down to odessa. odessa, after all, is a more important port to russia than any port in crimea. if he does that and stops, we can get back to more important things like nuclear weapons arms control and the climate crisis. if he doesn't stop, if he goes on and tries to swallow ukraine as one of your interlocutors just said, he's in trouble. he's in big trouble because ukrainians will fight. he will be in a guerilla war. he'll be like we were in iraq. he'll be defeated, but putin doesn't have the stores to fall back on, economic or financial. he'll bring down the russian economy. and he'll bring himself down. so while it seems strange to recommend patience and waiting, we're in the stronger position. let's don't commit to something that's stupid. >> p.j.? >> well, i'll agree with larry up to a point, that russia is a declining power.

and putin at this end of this will still control some ukrainian territory. but i think, to me personally, at the end of this, it has to be a clear path for ukraine to join, for example, the european union. >> p.j. crowley, great insights, much appreciated, my friend, good to see you. next, the text messages most troubling from the wife of supreme court justice clarence thomas. could they get her husband thrown off the high court or at least in some trouble? new dove men stress-relief body wash... with a plant-based adaptogen, helps alleviate stress on skin. so you can get back in sync. new dove men. a restorative shower for body and mind. hey businesses! you all deserve something epic! so we're giving every business, our best deals on every iphone - including the iphone 13 pro with 5g. that's the one with the amazing camera? yep! every business deserves it... like one's that re-opened! hi, we have an appointment. and every new business that just opened!

anyone else. as you know, and as you've heard us say repeatedly, we do not have a strategy of regime change in russia or anywhere else, for that matter. >> secretary of state antony blinken walking back the president's remarks in that speech yesterday as it makes headlines around the world. joining me is p.j. crowley, former state department spokesperson in the obama administration. p.j., awfully good to see you. let's talk about president biden who has largely been very careful with his words since the start of this invasion although he has called president putin a war criminal and a butcher. how unusual and important is it that the state department clarify biden's comment in yesterday's speech? >> well, i think we heard from the president that this is precisely what he thinks. normally you hear these comments in the situation room at the white house. he said something out loud. and i think, you know, notwithstanding the attempt to clarify that this doesn't mean the united states is changing

i'm not wounded. i'm intact. it's hard for me to talk about this. so many people have died in our country. >> in your previous answers, you said putin wants to cripple zelenskyy's government. but how much does putin want to get rid of zelenskyy? >> that's what putin fears most, an independent, charismatic, democratic leader, occupying what he thinks is already russian territory. at the end of the day, this is about putin's hold on power, and what he perceives as a threat to him personally. and so, you know, the contrast between zelenskyy and putin is very dramatic. that's what vladimir putin fears above everything else. >> p.j., i appreciate you joining us.

new video showing the atrocity of putin's war. it's difficult to watch. this is from bucha, outside of kyiv. this shows the cost of intense fighting. unclear whether the bodies are civilians or military. i want to bring in p.j. crowley, i appreciate you joining us. man, oh, man, this video from bucha is chilling. the horror in the cities and towns across ukraine becomes more apparent every single day. the question is, how is it going to end? will anybody be held accountable for this? >> don, that's a very -- that is a long term question. and obviously, accountability is

How I got here

Late ‘70s philosopher David Byrne once posed the question, "self, how did I get here?" I got a sad reminder this week.

not hurt. the suspect in custody is 25-year-old vincent pinkney. police sources say he's a known gang member with 16 prior arrests who was out on parole. that deadly attack is one of the latest examples in a growing wave of homicides in cities across the country. law enforcement experts blame a combination of more guns and fewer cops. here's cbs' jeff pegues. >> reporter: it's been a violent year in chicago's kenosha county. over 1,000 people have been murdered. in philadelphia, over 500. senseless violence, which often claims the lives of innocent children like eight-year-old p.j. evans. >> hi! >> reporter: in prince george's county, maryland. killed in a barrage of gunfire during a family gathering. antoine dotson is p.j.'s uncle. >> an eight-year-old who is a promising student, who had so many great things going for him to lose his life. >> reporter: michael harrison is baltimore's police commissioner, where murders are

also up. what do you think is behind this? >> whether it's young people, whether it's older people, people solving their conflicts with violence, namely, gun violence. >> reporter: harrison says another factor is ghost guns. his officers have seized more than 300 this year. >> people can order them online, have the parts delivered in the home and have a fully functional gun that cannot be traced. >> reporter: another problem: fewer police officers on the streets. after george floyd's death in 2020, some cities, like new york and oakland, cut police funding. >> we did a survey of a couple of hundred police departments showing retirements increasing, resignations increasing. the workforce is shrinking. >> reporter: three men have been charged in connection with p.j. evans' death. >> this is straight gun violence at this point, to where it's just senseless. >> reporter: today, antoine dotson seeks comfort in his faith but says even that's not enough. >> i know a lot of people say, you know, you turn to the church
