leadership, about how to message, how to bring back some of those voters that now see the republicans as their future, not the democrats? >> one is to listen, and list within respect. and two to acknowledge people's anger and grievance of the working class, i know it is hollowed out in this country. they say their jobs were shipped offshore to, china, to mexico, and all we offered was an unemployment check or trade adjustment assistance, we didn't care. and the first is acknowledging the anger and second having a situation that will deliver and not overnight. if we spent 30 years offshoring the jobs, we have to spend a decade delivering to earn back trust. it will be a slow painful process but we can start now. >> immigration is a big deal right now. they're seeing a surge in immigrants at the border in texas, so much so that some of the border cities can't handle the overflow. is there a bipartisan solution, an immigration compromise that can be had in 2023? >> there is in passing a
people that did get laid off that couldn't get ppp or other big disruptions to their businesses or livelihoods, they were waiting weeks and in some cases months to get an unemployment check and that was diminished from what their previous pay was. this was something that, yes, it was treated as a loan, it passed through the small business administration and they did more loans in 14 days than they had done in the previous 14 years. but the reason it was structured as a loan is if in the event the business didn't use the money as they were required to, then it would be -- they would have to repay it. but if they used it for payroll and a handful of other purposes, then the loans would be forgiven. that was the whole purpose of the ppp structure. >> i want to ask you before we let you go about the war in ukraine. that's something that you've been passionate about. as i mentioned earlier, you're a former army ranger. you voted no on the massive e i. you've been critical of the u.s. spending there.
know. >> reporter: an unexpected car accident, an unexpected loss of her full-time job, just before an unexpected rise in food and gas prices have all created an entirely different life than what anna was used to. she now turns in recycling for cash and works part-time as a caretaker for a resident of a senior center to add to her unemployment check, but that barely covers the bills. >> this is my mortgage, $825-24 and this is my car mamt of $482.99. >> and those are some of the fixed costs. she liver in riverside county where the annual inflation rate in june was likely 10%, higher than the national average. because people moved to the more affordable inland empire during the pandemic. >> not only have prices gone up but folks in the inland empire can't really shift to saying, well, i guess i will be able to work from home a little bit more

that's the immediate urgent thing. to get food and water to people who don't have it and there is no place to get it. that's number 1. number 2. there is a range of things including the virus. including the virus and the hospitals. i got a report, not the details i need but the hospitals along the path of this tornado. we will have to i am sure -- i will be asking my team to set up sights for booster shots and a whole range ever things. the worst part is their life has to go on as if nothing happened. they still have to take care of those needs from kids getting to school and whether or not they can collect an unemployment check. all of those issues. one of those issues would be
there's no place to get it. so that's number one. but number two, there's a whole range of things including the virus. including the virus. and the hospitals. i've gotten a report but not the detail i need about the hospitals along the path of this tornado. but, you know, it's going to -- we're going to have to, i'm sure i'm going to be asked to -- asking my team to set up sites for booster shots and a whole range of things, and people still -- the worst part is their life has to go on as if nothing happened. because they've still got to take care of those needs from the other -- you're going to get in school to whether or not they're going to be able to collect an unemployment check. are they going to be -- all those issues. but one of those issues will be public health as it relates to

results. vision is really important. and i've articulated by vision. but in addition we need folks with the necessary experience, the proven track record of accomplishment. people in maryland are waiting six months to get their unemployment check, chris. that is unconscionable. i'm going to make sure government works for you every single day. >> quickly with under a minute left to go, you're going to -- you would be governor in a year from now, right? it's a mid-term election. what do you anticipate being the biggest issue then. no one can see the future, but what do you see? >> sure. we need to look at post-pandemic maryland. there were many jobs that were existing two years ago that aren't existing now or they're existing in lesser numbers. so, we've got to train people for the jobs of the future. health care is a huge issue. 25% of covid deaths in maryland were attributable to the fact that people didn't have health insurance. i want to make maryland the first state in the country where
