reposition fighters restart the killing by attacking innocence again. at the halifax international security form house talk of the cease-fire playing there? good shannon, president biden has been clear and forceful in responding to hamas terrible horrific terrorist attacks six weeks ago. he went to israel he embraced the prime minister netanyahu he has deployed two aircraft carrier groups to push back on any potential for iran to try to strengthen and broaden the conflict in the middle east. and here at the halifax security conference this weekend a bipartisan delegation from congress met with leaders from across our nato allies and from other countries where there are folks here who are advocates for freedoms of human rights advocates from countries like iran and venezuela and russia, opponents of the current regimes as well as partners from canada, from germany, other legislators spent lots of conversations about the importance of the united states standing strong behind ukraine today. shannon: are prese the present f in this op-ed it links together the fights against russia and its aggression in ukraine, hamas, the president himself expresses great concern about what a cease-fire would allow hamas to do and continuing to kill and re- equip is their concern about that part of the equation? a distinction between a cease-fire. some folks are calling for a cease-fire in protests across europe and in our country by which they mean israel should stop fighting hamas, should end their campaign and gaza for a pause that has been negotiated between israel and hamas to allow the release of hostages is really an an american and other nationality hostages and allow food and fuel and medicine to get into gaza. and negotiate a brief pause in the fighting i think will be a good thing and i would strongly support a cease-fire meaning and end it to israel's campaign against hamas i do not support and neither does the president. shannon: let's talk about the fact israel aid is tied up in the politics of washington. every democratic senator voted no against the package the house had passed it takes money from the irs to fund that standalone israel aid. now the conversation is a bigger supplemental the white house once ukraine and other things tied together that the are number of gop senators who say it will not move forward ukraine funding unless it's coupled with serious change to border policy not more money for processing in but actually having a more secure structure against people showing up and enter without a way to track them an in moving o the country. the president's approval on this issue of the border he is upside down by 30 points on this americans do not think he is handling it well. at the same time house homeland security has a committee report out this week saying what's happening at the border could cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands excuse me billions of dollars a year sink this it's morally unacceptable american taxpayer dollars should be funneled to those who violate our laws and demand expansive taxpayer-funded benefits like education, healthcare, housing and more. where are we on negotiations in the senate about change to border policy as it may be tight ukraine funding? quick shannon, there is a bipartisan group of senators who have been working hard this weekend, last week and will continue working through the thanksgiving holiday to come forward with a proposal for a few focus policy changes that would address a dramatic increase in recent months the number of folks crossing our border we have to strike an important balance here between protecting americans historical role as a place of asylum at his face, his politics, their ethnicity and background. reducing what is currently a real challenge of our border. president biden has repeatedly demanded of congress that we take up and pass a bipartisan reform to improve our border security and the supplemental funding request he sent up to congress president biden is demanding the single largest additional appropriation to improve it border security in our history. i think we can and should find the middle ground here and move forward to secure progress republicans are saying that's money to process people into this country not to stop people from showing up at illegally crossillegallycrossing into the. there is an admission 1.7 potentially million got a ways people we do not even know who they are or where they are in this country in addition to millions of other people who have been processed into this country was some with some of m distant court dates they might not actually show up for. quick shannon that is a mischaracterization of the supplemental request. it would hire literally thousands of border patrol agents, customs and border patrol agents put in place a border crossings advance and nonintrusive inspection systems that would allow us to scan more and more of the vehicles across our border every day and a funded increase in deportation flights to say the additional funding request is just a process more people into the united states, misses a core goal of the funding requested. but i will say this, i am willing to work with the republicans on changing policy to make sure we protect asylum i something that genuinely protects those with eight legitimate asylum claim and yet reduces the number of folks crossing the border who ultimately do not have eight legitimate asylum claim and years later will be deported. that is the middle point we should work on together. it is critical we fund ukraine that we fund israel and that we provide humanitarian relief which is the other key part of this package. the week before thanksgiving i hope you folks will reflect on the fact providing humanitarian assistance into ukraine, into gaza and untethered doesn't other countries is a long bipartisan tradition in the united states and a key part of our leadership in the world. shannon: seems like there's almost total support for that humanitarian aid i know there were a few voices out there who think they need to be serious strings tied to that i want to talk to about 2024 all paint a very tough picture on reelection for the white house and there are polls at marquette, usa today and many others show serious problems for this president and his reelection campaign way think of david's comments? >> it's an interesting point from david. in 2007 a year out from the 2008 election i will remind you poll after poll was showing barack obama was going to lose to rudy giuliani and in 2011 barack obama was going to lose to mitt romney. head to head poles a year out don't say much at all. what matters are the elections it just happen the off year elections were very positive for democrats across the country. we far exceeded expectations in 2022 and the midterm elections. so cross special elections, midterm elections i see real positives for this president and those are rooted in his record of actual accomplishment. we have the lowest unemployment and the longest period of time in american history. he has significant things on a bipartisan basis. investment in infrastructure, reduced prescription drug prices and frankly rebuilding advanced manufacturing. i came out of manufacturing to run for office. we have seen 800,000 new high-quality manufacturing jobs created. part of the 14 million new jobs in just the last few years. that's a strong record to run on and i believe the president will make that case the coming year. shannon: a number fact checkers includes including across the political spectrum is not accurate to say they were created many came back after covid. but they are not counting his new jobs and for what ever reason all the things you listed are not yet resonating with the american electorate. were going to talk about more polls further into the show and we will see how that actually works out and they are to come a year
