las vegas, we are getting scant evidence of how much shooting was going on. the suspected shooter has been, quoting police officials, located and is now deceased. we don't know the number of victims, another that it is multiple victims. this occurred an hour ago, first report of shots being fired at beam hall, the elite business center. this is miles from one of the worst mass shootings at the music 91 music festival. this does not look anything like that and we pray it doesn't approach that. it occurs a little more than a month after the attack at lewiston, maine, that took 18 lives. let's go to jonathan hunt with the latest, what he is learning and what we can say about the casualties and what they are finding out. jonathan. >> jonathan: 3:04 east coast time and 12:04 we got word from metro police department there was active shooter on campus of university of nevada las vegas in the heart of the city of vegas, couple of blocks from mgm grand and off the strip. police said there was an active shooter and there were multiple victims. the university sent out alerts warning students to run, hide, fight in all caps, run, if they can, hide if they can, fight if they have to, that terrible warning we see so often to students on so many campuses and so many grade schools over the last few years. within about 30 minutes, we got word from the police in las vegas that the shooter had been located and "is deceased," what we do not know from police at this point is whether the suspect was killed in a shootout with police officers, whether he was killed in a shootout with any armed security that might be on the campus of unlv or whether he perhaps killed himself. we're waiting to get details. we would expect given the situation is in the words of vegas police department contained. we expect to hear from them in some sort of press conference. what we do not know is how many victims there were. they have only told us multiple victims, we do not know the condition of the victims, whether there are minor injuries, serious injuries or at worst, if there are fatalities in this shooting. we do know one piece of good news we have from police, the shooter was located and is dead, according to the las vegas police department. we heard from several students coming to cameras in the immediate aftermath of getting out of the scene. they said they were terrified. they heard shots, in some cases they saw bullet holes and they were evacuated from beam hall, home of the lee business school and the student union, the two buildings on next to each other on the campus of unlv. in the early going here, it is always difficult to be sure of the exact location of the shooting, that is information we will get from unlv. the campus is slightly north of las vegas airport and there was a ground stop on all aircraft there at the airport. we assume that is being lifted gradually and air traffic will begin to move again. look at the map on your screen, just to the bottom left is the airport and directly to the left, couple of blocks west, that is where you hit the strip. the mgm grand on the corner there. this is the heart of las vegas and terrible situation for a city scarred by the awful shooting at mandalay bay just six years ago, 58 people killed in that shooting, as you mentioned. what we understand from police, the headlines, the suspect is dead, there are multiple victims, we do not know the condition of the victims at this point, neil. >> neil: do we know the shooter's connection to the school? why he was there. beam hall is home of the lead business school, did he have a connection to the school. >> jonathan: police have given nothing on that so far, we expect to get details on any connection in an upcoming news conference. they are saying nothing about the identity or potential motive of the shooter and witnesses we've heard of, the students, none of them have said anything about seeing the shooter, him or herself and they -- we don't know anything to be perfectly blunt, neil, about the shooter or the motives at this point. >> neil: you mentioned a single shooter, are they talking about possibility of others or if the individual was acting alone? >> jonathan: they only said the suspect, singular issue was located and is dead, they used singular. then we heard reports from on campus that police were still active, we got the alert again from the university of las vegas that it was an active situation and asking students to remain, to continue to shelter in place. certainly there appear to be ongoing police activity, we have heard nothing official about there being more than one shooter. only thing we have from the police department is reference to a singular suspect and that singular suspect being dead, neil. >> neil: jonathan hunt, thank you, we will impress upon you for updates. great job on this. we're trying to piece this together, all of this going down about an hour ago, about three after the hour. little over -- after 3:00 at the same time here. one thing we're trying to piece together is timing of this and how quickly the university of nevada las vegas sent out message to students. this is not a test, the university wrote. run, hide, fight. las vegas police said in a separate post on twitter or x, there appear to be multiple victims and people should shelter in place. a good many did, but there was some confusion on this campus of 30,000 students where to go or what to do, if they were on the street or walking around this massive campus. randy, what do you make of what you heard thus far? the shooter has been taken out, we don't know if he had accomplices, we know he's no longer alive. we don't know the damage he might have done. >> that is it, it is early in the investigation, neil. and very dynamic situation. when you have multiple victims and we don't know the scope of the area that the shooter involved himself in. could be just one building, could be on the exterior of the building, we don't know the facts yet. as you said, law enforcement, las vegas metropolitan police department, even though unlv has their own police department and they would have responded, as well. the las vegas metropolitan police department, we don't know if there are casualties yet. they are the investigating agencies. >> neil: las vegas police, to your point, there were multiple victims, we don't know much more than that. we know that they were quick to get the word out, what is protocol to prevent shooting count from rising, to keep people safe? many are told to shelter in place, they are outside, they don't know where to go. steer me through that process, how you alert folks? >> you know, as you know, active shooters have become a so commonplace, if you will, that college campuses like unlv, they have plans that go into effect. they have very effective way of putting the word out. still there is people that are going to have cell phones -- >> neil: hold on, hold that thought, a witness to this event is speaking. >> an event going on with legos, to help students with study week take their mind off studying. i west to the restroom and got the notification there was a shooting in bh, right across from student union, i was scared, what do i do here? i heard adults saying to shelter in place, stay in your spot, don't move. i heard lock the doors. i was waiting there and 10 minutes, heard loud bangs, oh, no, this could be like a horrible situation. fortunately for me, it was police and they entered the restroom and saw my back on the floor and were like hands up. i had to come out of the restroom, they were checking my bag if i had anything on me, they let me out of the student union and i walked over here to safety and i saw another reporter that said there were shots fired in student union, i was lucky to get out of there. it was scary situation, i was by myself in the restroom. >> talk about the emotion, confusion, fear? >> definitely fear, i've only see this happen in the movies or elsewhere, i never thought it would happen in my own community. it was terrifying, i didn't know what to do. i can't get out of the restroom. if i stay here, oh. fortunately the police came in and took me to safety. >> how long were you inside? >> a good 20 minutes, terrified, i didn't know what to do. >> now you have been able to step back and process what is going on, what is running through your mind about everything you witnessed and wbt through. >> i'm like, what drove someone to do this. we all come here to get an education issue get a career. i don't know if it was an altercation or planned, just scary, man. i wouldn't want anyone to go through this, i can't imagine those that got hurt, the victims, family of those victims. i am okay, a lot of my friends are being okay. scary situation. >> have you been able to text and communicate with your friends and everything is fine? >> yes, a lot of them didn't come to school or were on their way to school and they went back. from my side, no one was hurt, as far as i know. >> the last question, is this going to affect tomorrow for you, when you go back to school? >> definitely. if we have the option, i'm staying home. yeah. >> thank you so much. >> thank you. >> neil: all right, this shows confusion, these are kids going to school. they are just trying to learn something and to grow and get the education to go out in life and something like this happens. total confusion, when word broke 11:59 a.m. that the school had been updated by university police, they were responding to confirmed active shooter in the area and repeated several times, this is not a test. police confirming officers were responding to active shooter on campus. another eyewitness is speaking now. >> don't come to the lab, there is a shooting. my family heard, i am from tuniza. i live here by myself. hopefully two weeks later, i will go back. i was able to check my friends were okay in the lab. i was worried, there was a lot of people in the engineering lab, i was worried and just on my way to the lab and fortunately, normally should be in the lab at 10:00 a.m., but i didn't go. my friends were there, i was worried. when you received the text, what was going through your mind? >> first message, no, i thought it was a joke or they were going to make a surprise in the lab. messages, okay, this really happened. i was asking why, just why, because i hope there is no victims and we don't know if there are victims or not. all the people in the student center are good, i was fortunate i wasn't there. imagine being locked in the restroom, that would have been terrifying. >> the last question i have for you is, when you were standing here next to me and saw all the police cars and fire trucks, what goes through your mind? >> i was scared and i can't like explain it, it was really scared, i received the message when i was here. i saw this before i saw the bodies and -- seen my messages. maybe someone died, maybe an attack, i read the message and i was praying for all the families. -- >> anything else you want to add? >> thank you. >> thank you. >> neil: a witness can recount what happened over last hour and 15 minutes or so. las vegas metropolitan police department is expected to update this. there were reports of active shooter at university of nevada at las vegas issue the shooter is now dead. it occurred near beam hall, lead business school, an acclaimed business school. police said multiple victims, we have not heard updates on the victim matter. we hope initial reports might have been mistaken. police say the suspect has been located and dead and appeared to operate alone. they are not looking for other suspects. i'm reading this on the wire. randy sutton back with us, former las vegas police officer. timeline was such, people were rapidly informed in enough time to save themselves from harm's way. there was very little to go on and still very little to go on. what do you make of it? >> for sure. then again, remember, this has just taken place a little over an hour ago. so dissemination of the information is still being -- probably still being gleaned. when you have multiple victims and multiple rooms in a building, all rooms have to be cleared and surrounding area cleared by officers. it is a dynamic situation. you have multiple jurisdictions and the various jurisdictions has to be tight or it will lead to more confusion. i know we want instant gratification and want to know what happened. i'm sure metropolitan police will issue a pres report within an hour, i would guess. the police response was massive. the suspect is deceased. i think if law enforcement would have been the cause of his being deceased, we probably would have heard that by now. as you know, when active shooter situations take place and police respond in the way they do, often these individuals will take their own lives as -- once we know who the individual is and possible motivation, then we'll know a lot more information. >> neil: the university or surrounding area doesn't appear to be in lockdown, can i read into that to carry on or would they still be in shelter in place command? >> that would be up to unlv in concert with metro. metro would give advice if they feel this situation is contained and that people can go about their normal lives. however, if they're still clearing the buildings, they wouldn't want those in the surrounding building to be confusing the scene. we don't know the scope of the scene, what is the initial assault that took place, did it take place outside or inside and that will govern the size of the crime scene and the area which will have to be processed. in a situation where there are mass casualties, forensic examination are vital to the investigation and complicated greatly when there are multiple scenes as this appears to be. >> neil: when on a university site, i remember virginia tech, i think 28 were killed in that tragic attack and that took a long time to unlock and clear the area, they were going floor by floor, i believe in the engineering school and it went on for, i believe, hours, before they were given or students were given the green light to proceed as normal. so the school officials will give us better idea, as will police, about the timeline of this. if it were localized to this business school home there, i don't know the size of that facility, it's a big school. that comes into play, as well, if you're trying to clear an area that size, it could take some time. >> absolutely right and also the search for victims. each room has to be carefully screened and making entry into those rooms, has to be done skillfully for the officer safety and also safety of contamination of the scene. all that plays into the professionalism of the agency and response to this. it comes down to the information that comes out about the victims and this is critical. are there deceased victims or are the victims injured and been removed to the hospital. this is what we don't know and this will be germane to how this police response continues in the next few hours. >> neil: it is interesting and you sadly covered and addressed these things in the past, a lot of people knee-jerk reaction, or students, how they respond, wondering why they are smiling or nervous, there is distinction between stages of grief versus initial stage of shock when something like this happens and that does seem to be maybe like a common nervous response. i've seen it, these are just kids we're talking about, who can't grasp magnitude of what just happened and what they just dodged themselves and then it processes and it is a hell of a process. >> you are 100% right. dealing with a traumatic situation like this, everyone reacting differently and there are no wrong reactions, let me put it that way. sometimes we tend to judge others when we see something that doesn't jibe with our reaction to trauma. we've often seen people react in ways that almost seem bizarre considering the situation. but one thing i've learned, not just law enforcement officer, one who deals with trauma of other law enforcement officers with wounded blue, i see and know everyone processes trauma differently. one thing to keep inment, the way you process trauma is right for you and we have to be cognizant of that because otherwise once we begin second-gessing our response to trauma that can lead to other complications. >> neil: glad you said that, it is different for each one of us, we react differently, there is no right or way, we are all human. stay there, if you can, another witness talking about what he saw. >> what did it sound like? >> sounded like loud banging, bang, bang, bang over. after a few shots, it kind of stopped, i'm not sure if he was more open, not sure. >> what were your feelings? what was going through your mind when you started putting the pieces together? >> at first, disbelief, i heard the news and started laughing, i didn't think it was real. i think at first it was stress onset and as it went on, some fear as the texts come in and the last sentence is not anything but hide, fight or run. there is a shooter, do whatever you can, you are on your own. that is the message it feels like was given. what are you supposed to do as a student? you don't feel safe or comfortable. what is the point in having campus police, police on campus that we pay so much and first response is not we are working on the situation, try to stay calm and stay where you are, no, prepare to fight, if you need to. what country is that the case where you are learning, prepare to fight for your life. >> now you have had a couple moments to reflect on the entire scenario with the police and the dent, what are your thoughts? >> my main feeling is i thinkaer, i do not know how to put it nicely, anger at the police. someone -- they are supposed to deescalate. everyone there gathered on the sidewalk enter and yelling and make everyone drop to the floor, scared the hell out of everyone, what is the point in that. we thought we were going to be in an active hostage situation because of how the police entered and it wasn't until you cross the door and you see it is police, it is fine. you are still nerves are on edge entire time and it is just anger at the system that allow this to happen so much, like what is the point in trying to reach higher education, go into debt you have to pay off and the government will not -- >> neil: one angry young man's reaction to how this was handled by university of nevada, different reaction from different folks, human nature to look at same reaction you had from others who said university and police had immediate and methodical response, this young man felt the opposite. it is possible some others are not, we know there are multiple victims, trying to find out more, this shooting occurred an hour and a half ago. we know the shooter has been taken out, we don't know by suicide, his own gun or by police. we are minutes away from an update on all of this. this is a big school, the university of nevada at las vegas. the business school is big, about 30,000 plus students and should add physically a huge campus, 350 acres. if that was to be locked down or shelter in place, that is a large area to cover. jonathan hunt has more on that. >> jonathan: neil, listening to that student, you were mentioning different reaction and nobody has the right to judge somebody who just come out of this trauma. that student said of text messages from the university officials, you are learning and then they tell you, prepare to fight and that is the reality for students caught up in this shooting and every one we have seen on campuses and grade schoolings across the country, that is message they get, run, fight and hide, run if you can, fight if you have to. we know from this situation, the university police and the las vegas police department all responding quickly and within by my calculation about 30 minutes of us getting first wor
