so is i don't know how this thing ends. and frankly at this point the republicans have -- i guess been swimming into the river far enough that it is just as well to keep swimming the direction they're going because turning around and going back is not a good option at this point. >> governor, what do you have coming up on your show tonight? >> we're going to have great show. we've got james lankford, congressman from oklahoma who will be with us. we will be talking with him about what's going on in that house caucus because he's the president of the republican policy committee. we also have ala brown who is going to be terrific. scott brown's daughter. believe me, she is a coming country star and she's going to be doing music on our show. a lot more and we hope people will join us at 8:00 eastern tonight and sunday night. >> she does have a lovely voice. i know a lot of people are going to be tuning in to your show as am i. appreciate you joining us as always. thank you so much. >> thank you, uma. great to talk to you. >> you, too. so what do you think? how is the shutdown gone on long enough or should the house gop
now with less than two weeks to go until the debt ceiling deadline on october 17th, is there time for republicans and democrats to find a middle ground before the u.s. possibly defaults? joining us to talk more about this is former reagan economist art laffer who joins us today. so great to have you here on our program. >> thank you, uma. love being here with you again. >> thank you so much. >> sure. >> is the white house creating a panic where there doesn't need to be one regarding the concerns over that october 17th deadline. are we going to run out of money to pay our bills? >> well, you know, the white house, the president obama is much like the head of a household where the family members are squabbling. his job is to ameliorate the conflicts and to reach a common ground. i don't think he's doing that very well. i wish he would. when you want to see what the consequences of this can be over a long time, i was just in europe this past week and if you
restore measures that get fund for very specific things like the parks around headstart programs. harry reid isn't bringing those to a vote in the senate but you don't hear much about that. how much of this is actually hurting the gop in your view and the public's eye? >> it's not good for the gop but i think the big mistake was ever allowing it to happen. the fact is they didn't have the votes to do what they wanted to do and what the house did which was to fund obama care. it couldn't go all the way. and here's the problem. the republicans essentially have rescued the democrats. the democrats were going to own the launch of obama care this week. it hasn't been a pretty start. it would have been totally on them and all throughout the 2014 elections, the elections would have been a referendum on obama care. the republicans have given the democrats an opportunity to change the subject and talk about shutdown rather than talk about obama care. so it's really the gop's gift to the democrats, taking what was a noose around the democrat's neck
eight months after hurricane sandy and reopened july 4th. but unlike mother nature, this shutdown could have been avoided and that's made for a greater sense of disappointment, especially from first time visitors. >> you couldn't go to the statue of liberty? >> we couldn't but we couldn't get up there. >> we have taken the kids out of school and trying to make this big educational trip and, you know, so we got the boat tour inste instead. >> a similar scene in communities around the country. over 400 national parks and monuments have been closed because t of the shutdown. that means you've got businesses that don't have tourists, people out of work and you've got vacationers that are simply disappointed. uma, back to you. >> tough scene all of the way around. all right, bryan, thank you. the house republicans just passed a bill giving back pay to furloughed federal workers once the government reopens. so far there seems to be no end in sight to this shutdown.
and instead turning it into a lifeline. that's really the unfortunate thing for the republicans has happened anyway. >> well, as the standoff continues though, the latest s rasmussen polls shows that 42% americans strongly disapprove of the president's job. t can the president stand firm not negotiating particularly with the october 17th debt ceiling so close? >> i don't think he can. he believes he can and he continues to act that it's got to be all his way. he said he's not going to negotiate. he's not going to give anything. but you don't get to operate like that when you govern. the same with the republicans don't get to have everything that they want. they sent over many, many bills to the senate that would have opened up and funded most of the government. and the democrats aren't going to take that. they're saying we want it all or we take nothing. well, when you say i want it all and i want it now, you get nothing and you get it forever.
i think the hispanic population, i'll speak for texas in particular, they look at the issues. they are pro life. they are pro family. they are very patriotic. they are hardworking individuals and those are the issues that really matter to them. >> well, uma, more than half of the 15 congressional seats the republicans have here in california have, well, districts that are at least 30% latino and people here at the convention are saying, well, something in the party is going to have to change and grow elect thinks it starts here. back to you. >> thank you very much. and coming up after the break, the amazing story of a fifth grader who saved the lives of two young girls at her school. it's a wonderful inspiring story. stay with us.
well, while washington fights for a deal across the country the republican party in california is focused on a reboot. the party is hoping to re-energize itself with new faces. velma is joining us now live at the annual convention in anaheim. >> uma, the republicans share of state voter here's in california is now less than 30%. you see part of a long-term decline. a lot of votes are latinos. with the prediction by the end of this year that the majority social demographic here will be latinos is most certainly a concern for the republican party. one group of latino republicans are hoping to try and turn the tide with that. it's an organization called grow elect. they find qualified latinos to go after seats that they believe they can win. that means it would seats, rather, that are held by existing well-established
republican office holders. here's how the plan who set up grow elect described to us how much a challen that can be when it comes to that kind of fight. take a listen. >> we want to see latinos represented in democratic strongholds, in republican strongholds, in competitive seats so we're finding candidates that fit their districts. we're finding great success in democratic areas. we're finding fantastic success in republican strongholds as well. >> well, grow elect is going and already winning the kind of seats that, well, school board mayoral races but at some point they're going to have to go after the big seats like the congressional seats and also the state seats. and that can be a tough internal fight within the party. yesterday i spoke to the texas governor rick perry and asked him precisely what he thought about this new group of republicans coming forward in the party. this is how he described it. >> i think it's a bad strategy.
