treea repatriate. once we fix the revenue defer sit then we can presented the pain just a bit to the working and middle class. john in ohio writes it does not matter to me what he says. his actions have spoken for him. he is the biggest spender of all the spenders occupied the white house. if he offers a budget that has a more aggressive deficit reduction than paul ryan's, then he will get my attention. if he pushes for a balanced budget amendment, in favor of a fair tax, i may believe he has been born again. you want to read more go to the blogs. cnn.com/caffertyfile. >> lots of strong views. we will have to see what the president says tomorrow. mubarak lost his grip on power. could his felt health be failing at the same time the egyptians are looking to punish him for his alleged crimes?

their own primaries? remember, the primaries did in the republican party when the tea party took over them. they're seeing that they can have problems getting a candidate out even if they had one and right now they don't even have one. >> do you worry that you could bring your heavyweight candidates that you don't particularly find exciting like paul lenty and romney, even though they're not exciting to you and don't turn you on, john, do you think since they're serious candidates they may suffer when they meet the actual paper? you know why didn't the dog eat the dog food with all the advertising? he didn't like it. could it be that they don't like these -- what's really going on is people are going chaotic out there and giving trump all this attention. he's up to third now or actually tied for second in the national poll last week because they're really saying no to mitt romney. it's really a statement romney is so boring, we're willing to go with this flash right here. we're looking at him. he's exciting. >> well, i think donald trump is very exciting. i think he's very much an

or whoa, whoa, stay away? >> reporter: in a word, no they don't welcome this. ed just mentioned saxby chambliss, they have been toiling away for months, four months, john. meeting several times a week. they just had one of their meetings this afternoon. they don't say anything coming out, but i was talking to sources familiar with their conversations, they are very worried about what the president is going to say. there are reports that he is actually going to call out this bipartisan group, talk about their efforts. that is the last thing both the democrats in this group and also the republicans who are really hoping they can come up with something bipartisan and lure other republicans onboard. plus they need the democratic president to say, i bless this group. it would be a horrible thing from their perspective. >> it wasn't terribly pretty, but they did strike the deal to avoid shutting down the government. the negotiations were ugly and everybody's already a little critical of the product, but at least you had proof that this republican speaker, this

>> and peter bergen, people at home are probably asking, if there are fewer drone strikes, if the cia is told to pull most of your people from the country, fewer or no special forces operations, are the american people less safe? >> yeah, obviously, it doesn't help. it helps al qaeda. but that said, you know, the drone strikes you mentioned, there were 118 last year. readily few of them are killing leaders of al qaeda by a count we keep, maybe a dozen militant leaders were killed last year. just as the drone strikes have been amped up, they're actually killing fewer members, leaders of al qaeda. i think the pakistani government is going to make the argument, let's reduce the number of air strikes, let's make sure we're really getting the high-value targets, which is something in both countries' interest and that's part of the discussion that will go forward now, john. >> and so, fran, if you're the obama white house and trying to repair the relationship while still maybe dealing with your anger over revealing the station

being questioned about corruption allegations. and yet the prosecutor tells cnn, there was no such questioning. what do we make of this? >> it's very curious, john. we've both read the same news reports. something happened, but maybe not in the way it was reported out of egypt. obviously the fate of president mubarak now becomes a huge issue in egyptian politics. he's living in the country. he did not go abroad. he's living in southern sinai. will he come under indictment? will he be prosecuted by the military authorities or a new civilian-led government for what they perceive to be his short comings and crimes in office? that's a key question. and you and i have seen before that when countries come through revolution, trying to deal with the older regime. what do you do with the deposed politicians becomes a consuming passion in politics. and it's often times distracts these politicians and political

group trying to determine what's going to happen in libya especially after gadhafi, should he be ousted from power. looking to play a role in libya after gadhafi. the rebels certainly seem to be very skeptical of that. it is a stern warning and a warning that comes from someone who knows this country better than almost anyone else except maybe moammar gadhafi himself, john. >> fred pleitgen live for us in tripoli. thank you, fred. let's get some perspective now on the day's big developments in the region with nicholas burns, also a former nato ambassador. nick, i want to start there. this is remarkable. the foreign ministers of britain and france publicly saying this isn't working. we're not being aggressive enough. we must do more. how unprecedented? >> oh, i think this is uncharted territory for nato. a very surprising development, and indicates to me a couple of

are finally, the japanese government, is finally bowing to outside international pressure. and japan is stopping this process of putting nuclear interests ahead of public interests. john? >> and what about those closest to the plant? not only is is it a seven out of seven, do they understand this is not a six-month or even a six-year endeavor, this is going to be with them for perhaps a generation or more? >> we actually did reach out to some of the people who live in the shadow of the facility. what they told us is five, seven, they don't care about these numbers at all. they knew this was a disaster as soon as they heard that hydrogen explosion. they knew that they were perhaps never going home. and, remember, they have lost their homes, all of their possessions, which now are completely contaminated, lost their entire economic infrastructure. they are completely disgusted. and that lack of transparency you were referring to, they feel

things. first of all, great frustration over the pace of this war. we entered this war on behalf of the rebel alliance. the rebel alliance is incapable right now of achieving a military victory over gadhafi. i think it also indicates two other things. first of all, the united states is the heart and soul of this alliance. the united states effectively withdrew from this operation. the first time in nato history the united states has not led a military operation and you're seeing the effects. britain and france are capable, but there's not a lot of strong military capacity behind them. and i think third, john, the alliance is not united. when turkey and germany, two of the largest and most powerful militaries in the alliance essentially say we're not going to be involved in any way, shape, or form, that further weakens this nato effort. so complaints from the rebels about nato's performance, but now complaints from the foreign ministers obviously orchestrated britain and france, it does indicate the alliance is in some trouble and needs to get its act

the president have any realistic -- do any of us have any realistic belief they will cut a big deal now? or are we likely to carry this one into the 2012 presidential cycle? >> sounds more like a big debate that carries on. obviously there are some pending problems here. there's the debt ceiling and lifting that by may 16th. and as part of lifting that, speaker boehner obviously saying, look, you've got to put some sort of deficit reduction on the table. so some event like that may force the president's hand, force both parties to do something. i think it's much more likely to be a 2012 issue. and here's one reason why. the day after the big speech on wednesday. where's the president going? going to chicago to officially sort of launch the fund raising for 2012. and so even if they say here it's not about politics, within 24 hours, he's out on the campaign trail. >> but here's something that came out of those negotiations, john, that you were talking about in the government to avoid the government shutdown. i was talking to a senior white house adviser said to me, asked

with what -- we can't conduct this war without those cia operatives there. >> right. well, let's talk about general petraeus over there, nobly over there leading our forces in afghanistan right now in what looks like a war of attrition at some point. can he win this war, gentlemen, starting with you, john.ç this is my main point tonight. can we win the war in afghanistan if our ally over there in that region, pakistan, is really on the other side and is more afraid of karzai as an indian agent than they are afraid of the taliban or al qaeda? are we in the wrong league over there? >> two things, chris. militarily there's no way the taliban can win as long as we are there. but what this administration is suffering from and what the bush administration was suffering from is they have absolutely as far as i can tell no political plan to resolve the situation in afghanistan. what i want to know, we keep hearing this administration, we heard the last administration talking about there's no military solution in afghanistan. well, if there's a political
