has had to be the case, has become a battle lab for all those people offering things, and the ukrainians take them and embrace them and we gift them. and ukraine tells us whether they work or not or we see how they're used. here's a really good example. this is a missile system originally designed to be fired from a jet. but here it is on the back of a vehicle last used in afghanistan. the only reason we know this set—up works is because it's already been used to great effect in ukraine. western assistance has enabled ukraine to fight back and enabled us to understand better what works and what doesn't. captured russian equipment has been pored over notjust on the streets of kyiv, but in military research labs here in the uk. and winning wars, the government says, isn'tjust about huge pieces of expensive kit. it plans to invest billions in new and emerging technologies, sometimes combining high tech with low cost.

ukraine is always asking for more. first, the himars and now another long-range missile system. potentially, this is under discussion, but we've seen the u.s. drag its feet with some of these weapons, especially when they do not want a scenario where potentially you can hit inside russia and escalate this conflict into something broader and more volatile. what ukraine wants at nato is what they've continued to be asking for, and the ukrainian ambassador was on bloomberg yesterday and she talked about, "we want more weapons, aid and support to ukraine, and more sanctions on russia." at the same time, they're trying to get in not just nato but also the european union. they want to be a part of quote, unquote, the european family. zelenskyy spoke this week, a little dip, he said, "it is absorb these leaders continue to look behind their shoulders," meaning, looking to the kremlin and they're concerned. they'll push it as much as they can, especially right now as we're seeing this turmoil in russia.

from kyiv. >> reporter: for a while we've been hearing that a possible large-scale counter offensive by the ukrainians could be imminent. and it seems they are moving closer to that point. in an interview with the "wall street journal," president zelenskyy said he believes his country is ready for that counter offensive. he said they still need more things but he said they can't wait for months and he believes that a counter offensive would be successful although he said he's not sure how long it would take. one of the things we picked up was that he said the ukrainians need more air defense systems, specifically more patriots. we know the ukrainians have two of those. one provided by the u.s. one provided by germany. he was speaking of 50 in total to keep ukrainian cities safe. of course, it appears to be the case that the patriot is the only surface to air missile system so far that has been capable of shooting down theheimersonic missile that's the russians claimed were
